I haven't seen most of the cars you list, but I disagree about the FT-86. I think it really manages to keep true to the concept for the most part.

Looks fantastic! If only they could mass-produce those twisted blade 5-spokes...

I agree with niky and hfs, usually I'm the one to beg for more power and torques on a sporty looking car, but this is supposed to be a light and fun coupé. Adding tons of power and their respective increases in braking capacity, suspension capability, heat management and consequently more weight, is just counterproductive to the raison d'être for the Celica.

I'm so glad it's called Celica, hopefully it'll make down under there.

There was three, the Original (as seen at the top), The G Sports Concept and the FT-86 II Concept. I assume you're reffering to the third one.

^ Those tailights/rear end reminice too much of a Subaru (GE) Impreza, just look at its overall shape and design. :indiff:

Looking back on it now, The FR-S design there was more closer to a Modern Supra then a Modern AE-86.

hmm looks like i got some choices soon 2011 mustang gt with all the performance bits, 2011 sti hatch, used mazda rx8( rotary or ls1 swap) or scion FR-s( prefer the subaru BRZ at this point though)

And I'd rather have the '11 GT anyway.

Can someone please inform me why the majority of auto makers reveal mediocre looking production models after all the praise they receive for brilliantly designed concepts?

Nissan did it with the Tiida, Lexus did it with the LF-A, Alfa with the Brera... and now this unintentional unveiling is properly saddening for me. :(

The Scion FR-S concept looked great too. I was hoping this would be a car that when you catch it in the corner of your eye it shouts at you to get your attention, but these new pics say otherwise.

Looks good. Hearing the STi is more powerful is music to my ears. What isn't, though, is that they are officially branching STi and WRX from the Impreza and will be a different car on a different platform, which leads me to believe that this will be called the STi, and there will be a slightly less powerful version called the WRX, which possibly could be a re badged FT-86?
 
I for one hope the wrx/sti remain a sedan/hatch.

Plus the next sports car from subaru is not coming til 2014, according to subie's prez. So unless they plan on keeping the BRZ a concept til 2014, this is not the new STI.

The head and taillights are quite different (especially the latter).

EDIT: Vehicle design legislation really ruins the modern automotive landscape. Numbskull pedestrians < artistic realisation.

Exactly, they make it safe for when people get hit. Maybe pedestrians should learn not to get hit by cars!
 
It always amuses me how the 6000lb SUV travelling 40mph loses the right of way to a 150lb person walking across its path, or the thought of such situation being correct. If it doesn't have an engine and a license plate, it shouldn't be on the same surface as my car, either, unless crossing at a safe place to do so. Bike lanes are fine. Riding on the shoulder is 🤬 stupid.
 
After having just driven one in GT5, I realized that the Mitsubishi FTO kind of looks like an FT-86. Or...visa versa.

I can see little sililarities, like the bump in the center of the bonnet, and the front grill. But that's about it.

It's hard to make calls like that because very few modern cars have much cultural heritage in their design. There's definitely a Korean trend going on - current Fords have that kind of look (though less successful than actual Korean cars).

I still don't see anything other than a few detail changes between the very sharp, Japanese look of the FT-86 concept to the production car. There's a raised hood, some larger rear hips and detail changes to the head and tail lights. Other than that it's fairly similar.

What I do think is that it manages to look like a Toyota, despite being different to any current Toyota. Their design language has been shifting towards this for a few years now (think about how even the Prius sharpened up from mk2 to mk3) so the FT-86 should fit in the range pretty well.
 
Got some info all of this information comes from the December 2011 issue of car and driver where they have already driven an masked Subaru BRZ ( car code name is AS1)
Yoshio Hirakawa Subaru senior manager for engineering maintain that Subaru did most if not all the engineering testing and production on the car. both cars to cu cost will share engines 2 Aisin six speed transmissions one auto one manual, interior will be shared, and glass will be shared. There will be 2 versions in the states and 3 globally Toyota,scion and Subaru.ONLY Subaru personnel were in the engineering bullpens and the test track during the cars 3 year time period. Toyota would just check in from time to time meetings from toyota were only necesity based. the hood will be aluminum,the engine code is the subaru FB20 wich uses toyotas D4S Dual prot Direct injection tech, The ASi(BRZ) engine sits 4.7 inches lower and 9.4 inches closer to the center of the car than a impreza.THis location precludes it from being AWD at least not with Subaru current trans-axles ( which wears Toyota part numbers)trunk has got about 8-10 cubic feet and is a notch back not a hatchback with 4 seats.2800 bounds is the weight with a slight bias towards the front axle. the benchmark was the Porsche cayman( 45/55 weight split). THe center of Gravity on the AS1 is 17.7 inches high one inch lower than the Cayman base price is now 28,000. the car is supposed to be about real handling not HP if you want hp they have the STI As I said this is all from the december 2011 issue of CAR and driver under Drivelines all good info if you asked me.

Didn't realise how autocratic Subaru was in the engineering process, though it makes sense given that they did the engine. Just find it amusing that the concept for a light, rear-drive coupe was Toyota's and then Subaru ran with it!

Centre of gravity is supposed to be one of the lowest of any production car, which is pretty impressive.

Still really want one. Just won't be in a position to afford one...
