Yes - hydro means "hydrogen", tetra means "4" and chloride means chloride.

However, we're missing a bit of information. The compound should be _______ hydrotetrachloride.
 
i unno...um..its in a can...most of the label is gone...it has a thin little nozzle attachment like you'd see on a WD40 can...um...it's blue and white? lol. Any idea what it might be for?
 
I think that's "canned air", used for blowing the dust out of computer equipment. The liquid inside evaporates really easily, drawing a lot fo heat out of whatever it is sprayed on.
 
shouldn't it have some sort of warning on it then? Like...isn't that really dangerous to be sold to the public, or is it industrial?
 
No--it isnt that dangerous, you can buy it in Radio Shack or Staples or Office Max or any place like that. It does usually have a warning that says it may cause frostbite (although thats never happened to me).

Spray it on your hair/scalp. It feels weird. I kid you not.
 
Let me look at the computer air stuff, I have a can right here.

Edit - It doesn't say anything about chemical content, but it does say that you should not inhale or let it touch your skin. If it touches you skin it may cause frostbite on contact. It is also flammable. If it touches your eyes, skin, or you inhale it, it says to call a physician immediately. I don't think that it would be one of these bottles. You wouldn't spray chlorine into the air, alone with hydrogen. Don't those spray bottles have carbondioxide in them anyway? My can of this air is gray and white.

I think it may cause frostbite when the liquid comes out. Just make sure that when you spray on your skin you don't tip the bottle, then the liquid, which is cold from compression won't come out and cause frostbite. Spray into the air to see if liquid particles are in the air before you spray yourself.

Edit - I just looked up difluoroethane. I think di means two atoms and the fluor is short for fluorite, which is a mineral form of calcium fluoride: a mineral form of calcium fluoride, occurring in veins with other minerals as well-formed crystals of various colors, including a banded purple variety, known as Blue John, used as a flux. CaF2

yah i think the prefix to the hydrotetrachloride is "flouro" or something. Pretty scratchesd out tho.

Besides, what the hell IS an "atom" of fluorite - or an "atom" of ethylene, for that matter? And ethane is not "short" for ethylene - an -ene features a carbon-carbon double bond, whereas an -ane features only carbon-carbon single bonds.

Difluoroethane = C2H4F2

Two carbon atoms joined to each other by a single bond. Each carbon atom has two hydrogens and one fluorine bonded to it (unless it's 1,1-difluoroethane, in which case both fluorines are nailed onto one carbon - with one hydrogen atom in attendance - and the other carbon has three hydrogens).

Sure, thats what they say, but I've done it tons of times (tipped the bottle upside down and sprayed myself/people) and no one has ever gone to the hospital.
 
:lol: I've done that before too. If you turn it upside down and spray it, it looks like fog coming out. If you spray the "fog" on something black this stuff that looks like snow covers the surface. It's pretty cold on your skin, but when I tried it, it didn't seem like it could cause frostbite.

It's good to see I'm not the only one who's childish enough to tip air dusters upside-down and spray them at people, including myself.

What happens exactly, to an eardrum when you start going deaf? I've noticed recently I'm turning the volume up louder and louder to get the same effect...

Nothing at all. If your eardrum is compromised, you ARE deaf.

It all depends on little hairs inside our cochlea. A quiet sound will reach only the first part of the cochlea. A loud sound will reach all the way inside. This information is conducted to the auditory nerve and sent to the brain. The hairs become damaged - by loud sounds - as we get older, and since the first ones are always exposed to a noise, they are the first to go. Thus a sound NEEDS to be louder in order to stimulate hairs deeper inside the cochlea to trigger an auditory nerve response.
 
So what is it that happens to the hairs? If you hear something that is far too loud to the hairs vibrate their asses out of your ear or something? From the way you describe it the ear sounds quite mighty. I don't know much about the workings of the human ear, but I do know that as soon as something happens, it's done for good (as I listen to Marilyn Manson blaring at -.96db). So what is it that prevents the sound, or what is it that makes them lose their ability to transmit auditory information?
 
Well... imagine that you have a long line of video tapes - representing the hairs - and you shoot a bullet into them.

A low velocity, small calibre round - a quiet noise - will penetrate the first few tapes. A higher velocity, larger calibre round - a loud noise - will penetrate deeper. But whatever bullet - or noise - is incoming, the first few tapes will be hit no matter what.

The hairs become damaged through use. And since the first few are always used, they are the first to go, thus a noise needs to be progressively louder to trigger a response since it has to pass the first few damaged hairs in order to reach the functioning ones.

Don't make me ask my girlfriend. She can bore for the Solar System on the workings of the ear (I take every other subject though).
 
Crap. I was kind of looking for an explanation as to why those little hairs take such a beating, and what it is that makes them stop working. Oh well, if I'm deaf, I'm deaf.
 
Is it really possible to detect cancers with only a bood test? My grandma has stomache cancer but my mom doesn't think the doctor is right...

I WAS formerly a cancer researcher.

We had developed a test to detect "Circulating Tumour Cells" (CTCs). Any decent sized tumour kicks out cells into the blood - not necessarily as part of a malignancy, but certainly locally invasive. By testing the blood for certain markers - they have to be tissue specific - you can detect the CTCs.
 
So my grandma really could have stomache cancer, detected by a blood test? I'll take your word for it, if you didn't know...you'd be out of a job.

Selectively permeable means the biological membrane of the cell allows certain substances to pass through more easily than others while it can completely block the passage of other substances altogether. The "phospholipid bilayer" refers to the structure of the membrane. The membrane is made of phospholipids that basically consist of a hydrophilic (water loving) "head" and two hydrophobic (water hating) "tails". Bilayer meaning there are two layers of phospholipids. The phospholipids arrange themselves so as the "tails" turn to the inside (where there is no water) and the "heads" face towards the outside and inside of the cell. Looking a little something like this- 0==0 .

I don't know what "C+Ved" means but I wrote that myself. I also don't know what "Borg" is. I knew this b/c I'm an A/P Biology student and we covered the cell structures about 5 chapters ago, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

"Borg" is a race of beings in Star Trek who have a collective consciousness. They have no personal pronouns and refer to themselves as "we", never "I".

Your "we'll try to answer" sounded exactly like it's come from a science website - a collective pronoun rather than a personal one. Or the Borg - hence the joke.

So, why the "we"?


Anyway, it wasn't a bad explanation, as far as it went. Probably enough for Silverzone's purposes. It's not the whole story though - as I'm sure you'll recognise.
 
In solids, what is the difference between the intermolecular attractions known as hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole forces? It seems to me that they are, essentially, the same thing...
