"Borg" is a race of beings in Star Trek who have a collective consciousness. They have no personal pronouns and refer to themselves as "we", never "I".

Your "we'll try to answer" sounded exactly like it's come from a science website - a collective pronoun rather than a personal one. Or the Borg - hence the joke.

So, why the "we"?


Anyway, it wasn't a bad explanation, as far as it went. Probably enough for Silverzone's purposes. It's not the whole story though - as I'm sure you'll recognise.

I promise you I didn't copy and paste that. I said we, as in we here on the site. I didn't want to sound like a know-it-all by saying "I'll" try to answer, because I might not know the answer to his question.

And yes, I intentionally made the explanation short and concise. I know there is much much more to the biological membrane. You could go for hours on it (Not you as in Famine but generally, you know what I mean :) 👍 )

In solids, what is the difference between the intermolecular attractions known as hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole forces? It seems to me that they are, essentially, the same thing...

Any takers?

Selectively permeable means the biological membrane of the cell allows certain substances to pass through more easily than others while it can completely block the passage of other substances altogether. The "phospholipid bilayer" refers to the structure of the membrane. The membrane is made of phospholipids that basically consist of a hydrophilic (water loving) "head" and two hydrophobic (water hating) "tails". Bilayer meaning there are two layers of phospholipids. The phospholipids arrange themselves so as the "tails" turn to the inside (where there is no water) and the "heads" face towards the outside and inside of the cell. Looking a little something like this- 0==0 .

To answer Jpec's question, if my memory serves me correctly, dipole-dipole forces are stronger than hydrogen bonds (or it's the other way around; I always get mixed up with this sort of thing). I'm sure the difference between the two though is in the strength of the bonds, and that hydrogen bonds only occur with a hydrogen atom present (but that one is a no-brainer).

*EDIT* Ok, it looks like I was getting mixed up. Hydrogen bonds are in fact stronger than dipole-dipole forces. Here's a link to an article on wikipedia on intermolecular forces for anyone interested:

As the optic nerves move back and towards the centre of the brain, they reach a "Chiasma" - crossover. 50% of the impulses from each eye go each way - 1/2 of the left eye goes left and 1/2 goes right, 1/2 of the right eye goes right and 1/2 goes left.

There are others too.

Nice - I learned this in a sensation and perception class I took for my undergrad psychology degree. I think that *all* sensation of touch is processed by the right side of your brain, while the left processes language. Is that right or am I confused (it's been a while since I took the class).

Question, or more of a request but anyway, I heard that as you continue to rise the atomic nubmer of atoms past 125 you reach a level that is called "Area of Stablity" I think I heard that it can go as high as 179 or something. OKay so, This was all infomation of the science channels, "Greatest Discoveries of 2004" so can anyone find the real study or knows any more of what I think that I am talking about.
 
Yes - more or less.

An element has been proposed called "Eka-lead" which, theoretically, would be twice as stable as lead. And lead is pretty stable.

It's all to do with electrons...
 
I also heard that as atoms get larger and larger the electrons are forced to become slower and slower, almost disproving quantum physics....that is really cool but I have really no remembrance of where I heard that.

I'm positive that hydrogen bonds are a special type of dipole-dipole bonding. It only occurs if a hydrogen in a molecule is bonded directly to an N, O, or F. This causes a large electronativity difference like in H20 so intermolecular bonding is much stronger than theoretically expected. Remember that intermolecular forces, even H-bonding, will never be as strong as intramolecular bonding.

I've heard figures ranging from 1%-10%-50%? What's the real answer?

Really? I thought that Nuclear Stability (regarding decay) had to do with protons and neutrons; no electrons involved. Of course I could be completely wrong, but part of me doesn't think so...

Well, it is sure that we don't know enough about the human brain to say with any certainty, so the fact is that we just don't know. I guess you can give estimates based on how you think it works, but these would just be hypothetical numbers and wouldn't really carry any weight in the science world.

I think I learned this in my sensation and perception class too - if I remember correctly the answer is 100%

The reason people started saying you only use XX% of your brain is because you can only pay attention to a finite amount of things at the same time. For example, try reading, listening to the radio, and controlling your breathing all at the same time - you can't because the brain cannot attend to that many things at the same time (also called multitasking). I may be wrong - see signature.

OK, thanks. The reason I'm asking is because I just remembered that my 9th grade biology teacher said that we use about 30-40% of our brains. Then I remember seeing/reading something that said the figure was closer to less than 10%.

That pretty much explains it -- we can't multitask like computers -- most of us anyway. :sly:

That was 4 years ago... but I think I can try to find out from him if he's still there the next time I visit the school.

I'm going to go so far as to say we use 100% of our brain, but only 10% of our mind, meaning if we can somehow tap the rets of the potential we have, we could be like psychics, math majors, anything like that.
