Technically it's not a new IP, it's the IP that gave Milestone notoriety (initially as Graffiti for Screamer 1 and then Milestone from Screamer 2), and even so, I don't think it's unjust for a new release, whether a new IP or not, to ask for the standard RRP of games in this day and age, especially if it delivers, which it seems Screamer is. It's also £5 cheaper than Crimson Desert which is a new IP for an immediate comparison.

Modern game development isn't cheap, they've enlisted proper voice actors, a well known animation studio for the cut scenes, created an entirely new racing concept and given it some actual substance, a 20 hour campaign and more.

We complain that the game industry is lacking new ideas, not innovating, getting stale, especially in racing games with everything pitching itself as a sim or based on a real series with barely anything setting them apart from eachother (other than which one has the fewest issues). Yet when someone innovates, does something new, exciting and actually pulls it off with good critical acclaim, we complain that it costs too much, and then wonder why no one bothers to do anything interesting or new.
I absolutely agree with you and I applaud Milestone sticking their head out with something different. I am simply not that optimistic for the game doing well but I hope to be proven wrong since I am fond of arcade racers too. I have had this on my radar since quiet a while but the 2 stick handling is just a no-go for me personally. I don't want to invest the time to learn it and I find it too risky for the money. If it had a conventional option added I would have been much more open towards this.

Once more I am not negatif towards the game but hesitant. I really dig the whole setting, story, teams, looks, sounds but it's too timeconsuming to get going and besides it's not the only game I play. With limited time added up...1+1 is 2.

I definitely keep an eye out on its progress! Happy screaming for those who jump in. I sincerely hope it is worth it!
 
I watched my friend stream it (who paid $70 for it 💀 this game is not worth that much IMO) and, unless he's just bad at these games, he was struggling so badly to get to grips with the twin stick controls. It almost looked like NFS 2015 the way the car was drifting uncontrollably into the walls.

Again, maybe he's just bad (skill issue), but he was on one of the early races within the story getting absolutely demolished and overwhelmed by how many controls you have to keep track of. Definitely looks like the game was made for a hardcore audience in mind, so it makes the full-price cost baffling :boggled:

I'll still get this game when it drops to, like, $30. I was willing to get it at $40, but the physics through the gameplay I saw looked pretty terrible :indiff:
 
Okay this may sound like a dumb question but is the twin sticks? Is the left stick for steering and the right for gas/brake? Or is it something else
 

I wonder if the reviewer realised you can bind the controls to the left stick. Sure, it likely goes against the control scheme the game was originally built around — you can tell from the slight delay when cornering — but with gear shifts, boost, and strike deployments to manage, there’s already plenty going on. Fine‑tuning steering with two sticks feels like a hindrance a lot of people could do without.

Other than that, this game has been a very welcome surprise from Milestone; it’s easily their most polished title yet and restores a vibe that’s been sorely missing from recent arcade racing games with a very stylish aesthetic. 👍
 

I expected the twin-stick controls to be the issue just by reading the headline.

I’ve had my eyes on this game for a long time and while it looks great with its’ art direction and excellent car designs, I personally would need a demo to commit to a full price purchase.

Sure, it likely goes against the control scheme the game was originally built around — you can tell from the slight delay when cornering — but with gear shifts, boost, and strike deployments to manage, there’s already plenty going on. Fine‑tuning steering with two sticks feels like a hindrance a lot of people could do without.

Well, either I've missed this information entirely or they haven't told us before release.

Someone posted a video on Reddit of the controller settings and their respective gameplay. Looks so much more intuitive.

Cool post its a relief there is an alternative, there's still wall slapping though and accelerate and brake on regular buttons is not ideal. Im saving my money for something else, just not convinced I would play it more than a few hours... Motorfest scratches my arcade itch it allows for finesse, has that moreish gameplay. Still waiting on something compelling to drive aaaarghhh! Forza and Wreckfest seem better propositions.

I could potentially see myself playing Screamer for quite some time but at the current price point without a demo to get grips with certain game mechanics, I’m holding off the purchase. €70/$80 for the base edition is quite steep, not to mention the Deluxe Edition which would set me back €82/$95 (with the current exchange rates).

Yeah deep sale or a demo would motivate me, I think its shrewd of you to hold off for a bit. Ive decided to get another dual sense pad this month instead, been getting some stick drift not the drifting you want! Speaking of drifting the hoonigan mitsubishi evo in motorfest has the most refined drift model ive experienced in gaming, truly joyous.
 
Screamer continues to find ways to impress me, most recently with its comprehensive photo mode!

Seeing nothing but great stuff on this game.
Feel like they would make a killing if they put out a free demo as it would get a lot of people over the fence.

Forza and Motorfest allowed all the guff to be partitioned in the options and they were much better for it.

Man, as good as the graphics are, the cartoonish looking effects make me wish this game didn't have that "UE5" look and went all in on its anime aesthetic (same complaint I had for NFS Unbound) :indiff: Like please can I get a racing game that looks timeless like Auto Modellista or ChoroQ Works?

Yep, you can either button‑mash through the dialogue or skip the cutscenes entirely with a long press. The story mode basically doubles as a tutorial for the game’s features, and you won’t miss much by sticking to arcade mode. You do unlock a lot of cosmetics through story mode, though most of them can be earned in arcade as well, it’ll just take longer.

Having completed the full story, beaten the "secret" boss in Score Challenge mode, and put in a good 30hrs of gameplay, I recommend this game to anyone that's been needing that arcade racing fix that's been sorely missed in the absence of games like Ridge Racer, Blur, Split Second, etc.

The controls are most certainly going to be major point of division with players, you either love it or loathe it and I find there's no inbetween. Having played most of Inertial Drift during lockdown, the control scheme felt natural to return to, bit heavier here than what it was like in Inertial Drift.

The biggest thing I want to give props for though is the soundtrack, nothing but certified bangers from start to finish. The teams all having unique themes helps sell the experience in my opinion (easily the best song is Gregor's theme "Nothing Personal").

I get that the price point will be a turn off but I encourage anyone thinking of giving this game a go, the arcade racing genre needs more of stuff like this and less Forza Horizon/Crew Motorfest collectathons that get boring within the first 2 hours of play.

My opinion is basically similar to review of Traxion.

"It's a fantastic game, and with patience and a certain level of skill, you can enjoy its fun and depth. However, the controls are difficult to master, and the AI is also challenging, so casual players won't be able to reach that level."

That's my impression.

Handling: Twin-stick controls aren't as intuitive as inertial drift, and the effects aren't as clearly noticeable. Personally, I think it's better to focus solely on drifting with the right stick until you get used to it.
In my case, it took about three hours of gameplay to get used to the controls. However, once I got used to it, I found the physics and operation enjoyable, and instead of aiming for faster lap times, I wanted to drive in a way that was closer to my ideal, a beautiful driving style that I could enjoy.

AI: The AI is quite challenging even on the lowest difficulty level. I myself am only an average player, but even on the lowest difficulty, beating the AI requires flawless driving, and in the early stages of the game when I wasn't used to the controls, I saw the game over screen over and over again. To put it bluntly, I think this is their biggest mistake.

Story: While you can skip it, I personally recommend enjoying the story if possible. The story of this game is not like the typical modern racing games that say, "We're friends!", "You're a superstar!", and "The police are bad guys, and street racers are heroes!". It's more of an ensemble drama, with many drivers participating in the race based on their own individual goals, and various changes are occurring within that context. This may not be a story everyone will enjoy, but Milestone has made a bold attempt to reclaim something that has long been forgotten in racing games.

Soundtrack: Perfect. Alongside TXR25, this game boasts one of the best soundtracks in modern racing games. There's no run-of-the-mill hip-hop here. Each theme is composed specifically for a character or team, and the music alone evokes the character. The soundtrack is available on Spotify and other platforms, so I highly recommend checking it out. My personal recommendation is "Lies," Kagawa-Kai's theme song. It's a great song that expresses the antisocial nature and the "lies" they carry as yakuza, and it's fantastic as background music for a racing game.

Graphics: What NFS Unbound really needed. While anime-style, it also has realistic elements, and the rain graphics, in particular, are stunning. The only downside is the lack of an option to select the time of day or weather in modes like Time Attack.

I bought the Digital Deluxe Edition on Steam, and I have absolutely no regrets; I thought the price was justified. However, I suspect that new players will think this game is "the worst game ever!" within the first few hours due to its difficult-to-learn controls and overly challenging AI. That misleading game design is truly a shame.

Thanks for the detailled reply really appreciate it, I think its one for a very deep sale if at all. The game design comment is really handy I think I would baulk at the controls and unreasonable AI myself.
 
Hey guys, I am someone who has been very skeptical about this game mainly due to the controls and pricing but something caught my interest : it seems the game has wheel support 🤔 Is that true and did anyone test this game with a wheel? Simply wonder how it plays 👍
