Didn't find a thread dedicated to this movie. Maybe there is and I just missed it. If so sorry. (click picture for link to IMDB page)

I just watched this movie and that it was phenomenal. It is a very moving film that really puts it into perspective why he is the most talked about race car driver ever. I am very grateful for this film as I was very young when he was racing and didn't get to witness him in action.

For me This was what film making is. A story told in a way no other has told it. 10/10 from me

Already a thread somewhere.
I'm using the iPod app so I can't link you.

EDIT: but while I'm in here, does anyone know where on earth I can get this movie?
I want to see it sooooooo bad.
If it's as good as people say it is, I wouldn't mind adding it to my personal collection...

Does it deserve a spot alongside Le Mans and Grand Prix?

My Bad. I did a quick search may have overlooked it

I haven't watched Le Mans yet as i just got a hold of it and have had no luck finding Grand Prix therefore i can't really give you an opinion on whether SENNA is as worthy as the others

And as to where i watched it. I'm not sure i can answer the question in this thread as I have previously been warned about talking about piracy/copyright in the forums. Maybe PM me?

I'd delete that link if I were you.
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks though.

EDIT: silly me lol

This film is utterly amazing. Sadly the official UK version's been cut down quite a bit, it's worth looking for an import.

Ooops. I definitely searched within the Formula 1 thread and didn't think of the Movies & TV section. My bad. Mods can lock delete or merge this thread with others if they feel.

As for the post above me. The length of the movie on IMDB is listed as 106 minutes which is less than 2 hours. The version i watched was approx. 160 minutes. 2 hours and 40 odd minutes. I think i got a hold of the uncut Blu Ray.. hmmm

Guys can Someone PM me the links for that movie (oh and Grandprix,le mans and the truth in 24 please)summer is on the horizon and I plan to see all those

Same here. I once watched some youtubevids of him racing and I immediately understood why he is such a legend, his car control seems inhuman at times, simply breath taking.

I don't like Prost's portrayal, I don't like the mis-match audio for the onboards, I don't like the ignorance of Senna's dark side and I don't like how it effectively skips straight to the McLaren story.

There is so much this film doesn't cover and I don't feel it gives a real impression of what Senna was really like (which although thats rich coming from me as I was too young to have known this, its something I have come to understand though opinions of the time and simply watching the old races).

I think its a nice film to tempt people into watching F1 but its sadly not a very good description of Senna at all. The main theme with Senna is the fact he had no problems trying to bully drivers into lifting or facing a terrible accident but he also worried for the safety of F1 drivers and did genuinely care when someone was in peril. Its such a fascinating set of attributes, so fiercely competitive yet caring. The fact that this film does not even portray this is very sad indeed.

Instead, the film basically portrays Senna as a driver who did no wrong and always tried in the face of adversity. It also portrays Prost as being purely political and suggesting Prost didn't have the speed to compete with Senna. While this isn't completely wrong..its not really a fair or accurate portrayal of any of the events or people involved.

While I realise this isn't really a documentary, its more a film, they didn't need to portray Prost this way and they could have easily used the much more interesting duality of Senna's personality instead of the "fallen hero" story they have tried to depict.

Decent film, worthy of showing non-F1 fans but it could have been a lot better and I personally feel its not a fitting tribute to the man. Simply ignoring his flaws is not respect. Respect would be displaying his flaws but contrasting them with his strengths.

If people want to watch something that gives a real feel for who Ayrton Senna was, I refer them to the BBC 1995 documentary as its much more fair and honest and doesn't glorify him. There is also the recent short Top Gear documentary which does a good enough job too (which only serves to contrast with this proper film even more....if TopGear can manage to make a good, balanced piece on Senna, surely anyone can!).

For reference, you can watch the BBC 1995 documentary here:

I bought a legal copy of Grand Prix and it's a must-have for race fans; a proud addition to my collection. My wife always refused to watch racing movies but I twisted her arm (figuratively speaking) and got her to watch Grand Prix, and she actually liked it. In fact, she afterward insisted on watching some of my other racing movies. I watched Le Mans via Netflix and didn't enjoy it that much. While Grand Prix delved into the lives of race drivers, Le Mans was shallow and empty.

I think the resurgence in popularity is due to the fact that le mans contains great footage from a dangerous era. I am not aware of any other footage of that quality.

See, I'm the exact opposite.
Grand Prix had too many people scenes.
I wanna watch/hear some racing!

That's what makes Le Mans one of my favorite movies of all time.
How many lines are spoken?
I heard "It's Life." and then the rest was the roar of the 917.
I think it portrays what racing was like back then really well.
You're inches from death at all times, take your eyes off the road for one second and your race is over.

Yeah, it does have great footage, which is why I still watched it. It's just that, as a movie, it's lacking character development. The viewer can't develop an attachment to the people because the people are just generic, undeveloped faces. If a person is just wanting to watch race footage, Le Mans is the better of the two, but if someone is wanting some sort of story mixed in with the racing, Grand Prix is the way to go.

I suppose it's like with The Matrix movies. People liked the first one more, while the second and third films were scolded as being crap. I enjoyed them as action films, and the second and third films delivered on plenty of that; more so than the original. They might not be as interesting in terms of plot, but if someone is just wanting a whole heap of action the second and third Matrix films deliver on that very well. Likewise, Le Mans delivers on plenty of good racing footage, but not much else, while Grand Prix is stuffed with more character drama though not as much racing footage.

Back on topic of the Senna film....

I patiently waited for my low-end DSL to download the web video last night. I then hunted around for a program to convert an MP4 to a DVD, and waited for several hours while my old computer gradually converted it and then burned it as a DVD. Today I got up looking forward to watching it, and it was fully watchable on my DVD player, but since it wasn't an actual DVD release it didn't have options for stuff like subtitles/captions. I don't know anything other than English, so I couldn't follow much of the dialog.

:guilty:

I aborted and still wait to see the film. I need to watch it as a DVD/Blu-ray release with options for translation because I want to know what is being said. I still can't find release dates (disc), though.

Found this, not sure if it's a segment of the movie, but it is so amazing that I needed to share:

His self-belief was amazing. And he doesn't even sound arrogant, everything looks natural, matter-of factly spoken.

You know how much I wanted to watch this movie, I actually saw the movie DVD for sale at the 2011 Malaysian GP sold for MYR50. Thought it was too expensive so I didn't buy it. Now I regret for not buying it as I can't find it at my local Entertainment Store!

It's a great film!

The biggest revelation to me was watching M. Balestre in action (although partially out of context). His reputation is famous, in person he's even more sinister :)

I REALLY enjoyed this movie too, but I also was a bit disappointed. As others already pointed out, the emphasis was put too heavily on the rivalry between Senna and Alain Prost.

I would REALLY like too see more of his "insane" driving, there was simply far too little of it. I enjoy seeing him simply drive on the edge much more, than talking gibberish about God and how evil Prost is, but that's just me.

I'd like to go and watch this but apparently the area in which I live doesn't seem to have a big enough F1 orientated audience.

(In essence it's more the area where you're likely to find people with an IQ of ~4 wandering the streets drunk in the early hours shouting 'what you looking at?' to the nearest streetlight or bin)

So no cinema see's it fit to even show it here :(

I haven't seen it, but I intend to. The problem is getting somebody I know who is as into F1 as I am to go to the cinema with me (And finding a cinema with a showing). I don't like the idea of going to a cinema on my own, just doesn't seem right. Guess i'll be waiting for it on DVD :D

This film is worth taking a hundred mile drive to see. It was truly brilliant.. although the ending was pretty predictable... well, for me. It kept my girlfriend entertained, until she found out that he dies in the end. Sorry to ruin it for some of you.

Great man, great driver! Awesome movie.

(Its worth saying that I really have to use up all of my brownie points to even get her to watch a race with me, much less go see a movie about racing..)
