So I'm feeling what I knew was going to happen.
Long Story: The lady picked out a ring design online and printed it out. She gave me the prints and said "have this made for me, present it to me when you are ready". Pretty slick. Mom says, "Your father has a tie-tack with a diamond in it - it's yours to do as you wish". Even better! Free stuff! So I ponder this life commitment for a few months, then take the printouts and the diamond to a local jeweler that her parents use. He cranks out a model which I surprise her with a 'fitting' and opportunity to make any adjustments. Everything is just fine *giggle giggle*. Come to find out, that diamond is rather large. So he goes to work on the final White Gold ring, slaps in the additional stones, calls me to bring over the big one to stick in, and I'm done. So I'm looking at this finished product and thinking "Good Lord. That rock is huge. I'm going to look bad because everyone is going to think I have major dough when really the diamond was given to me and the ring didn't actually cost that much (less than I make in a week, if anyone is wondering). However, if I had had to purchase the center diamond it would have cost me about three or even four months pay. So sure as ****, everyone in her family sees this thing and the first thing they say is "geeze, look at that rock hanging off her hand. So-n-so didn't get one a fourth that size". Makes me feel like a real jerk when in fact I've done something pretty cool.
Short Version: The ring I gave her has a big family center stone, which I was worried would draw more attention than I wish to deal with. I was right.
