Shift 2 and using the Clutch...

Anyone else find it annoying that even with Auto Clutch OFF the car can still be put into the next gear without depressing the clutch pedal. That pisses me off. It should lock you out like GT5, TDU2, FM3 if you do not press the pedal in time before you move the gear lever.

Essentually the only difference from Auto Clutch being ON instead of OFF is you bounch off the rev-limiter a few times before the gear change...thats if you choose not to push in the clutch.

Then if you do choose to push in the clutch its just feel's pointless...

Common now...

I realize that there are types of sequential gear boxess that still utilize a clutch when the driver deems it necessary...but when I'm lapping Willow in a stock EVO 9...I want to miss some shift's DAMN IT...thats real racing!

how many times can you bounce off the rev limiter though?

Once, when exiting the pause menu (auto gears + auto clutch + elite), I buried the gas while I hit the 'resume race' button and it disqualified me for a blown engine.

That time it was a mistake on the game's part, but from then on I assumed that there was a legitimate way to blow an engine.

You want to miss shifts? Why?

Really?

Thats like asking why we want damage modeling....because when you do something wrong we want the results to be realistic.

Therefore...

You crash...you damage something, it slows you down.

You miss shift...you get locked out, it slows you down.

I for one am glad it is modeled this way and not like GT5, this way I can shift realistically using the clutch for upshifts, but downshifting without using the clutch by matching revs, like you can in real life, iRacing and netKarPro, which still allows you to use H-Shifter plus clutch but still left foot brake.

I'm glad Shift2 did not copy the way GT5 stupidly lets you not use clutch and still get to H-Shift, or if you do use the clutch then you must use it for both upshift *and* downshift, not just upshift, it is not realistic to most real racing transmissions, it forces you to heel-n-toe for downshift without the option of matching revs for downshift.

The way Shift2 is setup right now is perfect, you can heel-n-toe if you want to simulate that, or you can do clutchless downshifts by blipping throttle and matching revs, perfect.

I wish GT5 was actually like that, even when using heel-n-toe they set the timing limits so close that we miss shifts unecessarily, I'm guessing in a misguided effort to keep G25/G27 owners from having a shift timing advanctage over DS3 or DFGT owners.

Damage is different, its part of racing. Missing Shifts is not.

I dont mean to sound harsh regarding your point, I just think theres more worthwhile things to point out as issues.

One thing I noticed is that GT5 doesn't seem to like my H-shifter for my GT3RS, but Shift surprisingly works well with it. GT5 works with it, but it is WAY to sensitive and will read the gear before it is even clicked into it which didn't happen with my G27 shifter (which admittedly is MUCH, MUCH better than the fanatec version). It reads it as being in gear, but with the clutch pushed in when the stick is in the neutral position. All I need to do is approach the gates. Its very annoying, but in Shift, it works very well and doesn't share this issue which is rather odd.

Oh, and blowing your engine happens a few ways it seems. I was getting really frustrated by the lag and the AI ramming me during the Exige trial so I just started doing donuts in the infield of the last sweeper before the home stretch where there is a nice patch of tarmac. I was very happy to see that if you spin long enough you blow your tires. I blew both my rears out, kept spinning and noticed smoke started coming from the engine, I think I was also doing some clutch dumps. Eventually more smoke poured out and the blown engine message popped up. The tires blew once their temp hit about 350* each time.

Yeah, I noticed the same, this also dumbs down launching; not quite nuanced as in Forza. You probably also noticed how hard it is to lock up the wheels under heavy breaking. As gamey as some of these aspects are, I find the fun factor of the racing is still very enjoyable though.

So guys there's no way to force the clutch? Come on...

BTW this game kinda sucks, the FFB (on pc) is horrible and you can't feel the car at all under your hands.... they all weight 20000 lbs and can only understeer.... :grumpy:

yeah, i dont like this either...

to me there seems to me no difference to using the clutch or not.

i did play with turning auto-clutch on/off, and noticed one minor difference.
the animation of the legs of driver..
if auto-clutch is on, and you change gear without clutch, then the guys leg will press the clutch,

if auto-clutch is off, and you change gear without clutch, then the guys leg will NOT press the clutch (and telemetry also does not show clutch used)
of course, if you press the clutch then its animated.

im not sure, but i think its deliberate as there is a slight flaw in setup.

if im playing with a car with sequential/paddles i do not want to use clutch,
if the car has h-shifter, i do.
... to do this, with the current way the options are setup, this would be a real pain.

i suppose we therefore want it something like a cross between gt5/fm3, but with both an advantage and disadvantage for using clutch for cars that have clutches :)
