I always hated this, that when a car is next to you .....you cant hear your gears. ? Have to look at the rpms. Never been in a real race...is that realistic?

Yes, completely unrealistic in a closed cockpit car, but depends on what other cars were around you in an open car.

I dont have that problem using interior mic and 5.1 surround sound.
The only time I will have difficulties earing my car is when the other cars are way louder than mine (Honda HSV-010 against any other JGTC/Super GT for example) but even then, I still ear my own car, but its quite dim I'd say.

i did not have the sound problem either, but now I do...
Sometimes (it seems random), sound fades away or from rear to front and the subwoofer is gone. Hitting something brings the sound back ??
Clearly not the sound system, but something in the game, as I remember it happening about a year ago in career mode too. I did not yet have the 5.1 system, just TV speakers.

I have noticed that sound problem for a long time. I think it is because of the hardware limitations of the PS3. The console seems to have problems to reproduce many different sound sources at the same time.

So when more than your own car sounds has to be reproduced, the game select the "most important" sounds - and that is sometimes not your own car. Your own car sounds get muted in such scenarios and they come back after a few seconds. It is very annoying indeed.

The only "problem" I got is when I switch view from cockpit to chase view, the engine sound stay in surround until I stop or slow down enough, then the engine sound will be on "stereo", surround speaker playing surrounding sound, if that make any sense, but it was also like this in GT5.
