Shifting without the clutch

I don't understand why people want to do this. It has no practicallity when driving on the roads and can even be dangerous, both for the car, and for other road users if you don't know what you are doing. This is a technique used by race car drivers to get those extra hundredths of a second off their lap time. Why would anyone want to heel toe in their '89 Corolla (or whatever they drive) when going down the shops to get some milk? :confused:

Actually, that's not really true. I drive like that and it's not to shave hundredths of time; it's to keep the chassis composed and save wear and tear on the synchros and clutch.

If I'm coming into a turn under brakes and I know I'm going to accelerate out of it, and quick heel-toe downshift keeps the deacceleration smooth and avoids any lurch forward as you let the clutch out. It's not heroics.

As far as clutchless shifting goes, I'm with you.
 
Actually learning clutchless shifting came in handy twice now.

First time the clutch cable on my Holden Commodore snapped and I drove home about 20km's with no clutch, no problems. At traffic lights I slowed way down and hoped it would turn green before I had to come to a complete stop, this didnt always happen so I had to stop out of gear, turn off the engine, put it in gear and when the light went green crank it over in gear and the car would lurch forward and drive off. Looked alittle silly but got me home.

Second time I was driving a Toyota Dyna light truck and the clutch slave cylinder failed so I had to drive it about 50km's through the hills without a clutch, wasnt a problem.
 
is there a video that can teach us n00bs stuck with automatics (like me) how to do all this fancy stuff? or at least a website with pictures
