I don't know, but I'd expect a Scot to be able to be able to type "don't" and not "dont".........

Back on topic, saying it's a cheat is answering the question before it's asked! In the end it's a game (unless you're in competition with a human or publishing your results), so isn't it about what you enjoy the most?

I don't cut corners, because I enjoy trying to drive them more than not.

As someone said, when I race another person we agree the rules beforehand and that includes if it's OK to drive on the grass or not.
 
My best friend and I used to play all the time and we would always end up bumping each other, cutting corners and just flat out trying anything to gain and advantage. We haven't had a chance to play GT4 except once and that was just comparing garages and whatnot. Next time we actually get to gether though I am turning on the pit stop penalty to dissuade us from this type of behavior. Neither of us do it when playing in GT Mode but for some reason the desire to harass each other is just too great.

No one complained becasue we were equally guilty and we would miss a hard bump almost as often as we pulled it off so laughing at each other the entire game was just how things went.

If you need to cheat to win then you definitely missed the point of the game. The 9-year-old son of my wife's friend tried playing GT4 and the first thing he asked was where the shortcuts were. If you want to cheat consider the fact that you have the same mindset as a 9-year-old.
 
Strange, I was nine the day you were born! I probably have got the mindset of a nine year old, but I don't think I immediately looked for the short cuts.

sorry... but, it's generally not an accepted practice to use "you" in the 3rd person. Especially if you're quoting someone.
 
I'd have to disagree. Perhaps it's a European thing, but when he says 'if you cut across", I would understand him to be referring to an unspecified person in the way that my grand mother would have said "one".
 
I don't mind "cheating" :D . The only way I could spin out as some people say is if I drive into the tan "sand". Otherwise, I think it's flawless.

It's not a euro thing, just improper english.
Unless you're specifically addressing someone, (as I am here) you should stay in the 3rd person voice.
On a forum, when quoting someone, what you type is effectively replying to what they said. Unless the response is preffaced with something to the effect of "I totally agree, and ...".

Seriously, this thread is about taking shortcuts, not how to refer to people in the third person.

I've no doubt it will get locked very shortly if this continues.

Anyway, to get back on topic: I think if there were more of a penalty for driving on the grass (such as a greater loss of control) then the shortcuts would be used less frequently. They'd give no advantage, so people would stay on the track. There needs to be work done on how they can penalise shortcuts.

But here's an interesting dilemma that happened to me recently:

Longer than average race, about 4 - 5 laps I think. By the start of lap 5 I was 20+ seconds in front, and starting to get bored. What better way to relieve the bordem than with a healthy bit of driftin'! By about the third corner, I went in too hot, and ended up in the gravel. I spun trying to get back on the track. When I finally got it together, the second place car slipped passed me to take the lead. DAMN! I chased hard for a couple of corners, and was dreading comming second and having to repeat this race. I was clearly the winner before I got bored, damn it this is my race. So on the last trun, I neglected to break or turn, and managed to shorten the track by two corners. Onto the final striaght and on to victory.

Now, I was clearly the winner, as I would have won by 25+ seconds if not for my own stupidity, and I didn't have the pantience to sit through this race again. In this instance was shortcutting the final chicane cheating?

You be the judge.
 
aawww, but bickering is fun!!! if someone contradicts themselves, you just gotta have fun with it...

i reckon they should model the grass/sand as accurately as possible (as they should for all other aspects of the game) and then leave it up to us to play the game as we wish. i would hate to think they are limiting the realism to cope with 'cheats' and/or crappy drivers.
 
On the other hand the gravel in GTR drives me up the wall, it can take hours to get out of it. I think we need something a little less severe than that.

At least you can get out of the gravel in GT4. In RL cars often end up stuck for the remainder of the race.

Now that would be punishment for putting a foot wrong! :crazy:

The option would be nice! For people who are really really good at it, I dont think it would be that hard to offer that kind of feature for that extra bit of realism for those that wanted it.

Except GT4 does not have a DNF ranking. You don't get stuck in the sand/gravel, you can't run out of gas, you can't blow a tire, you can't drain a hybrid battery all the way (but you can drain it to one bar), and you can't crash. All the things that should actually take you out of the race in RL just slow you down. Hence, it is a game. I would be furious if every time I hit the sand or a wall I was done for the race and it might take some of the fun out of the game, causing me to not push the car to its limits for fear that I might get a DNF.

Unfortunately, this unrealistic aspect that helps to make it still a fun game allows for cheaters. They should possibly make it slow you down a lot more, kind of like Forza, so that it is true punishment for going off track, whether on purpose or not.

I said it would be nice to have the OPTION in other words you could turn on something like an "Extreme" option, or off. Therefore you wouldnt have to use it.

Anyway it claims to be a driving Sim, a sim cant be to realisitc :)
 
I knew nothing about the shortcut on Fuji until a friend showed me. Im scarred for life! :(
 
I have a natural disdain for cheaters. First, you can't trust them. Second, they never seem to understand that they are cheating themselves. If you have to cheat when playing a one player game, it doesn't say anything positive about you. If, on the other hand, you're just cutting through the grass to see what the car will do or because you're bored, well there's nothing wrong with that.

Let's say a Scottish driver like Jackie Stewart got stuck in a sand trap and you were a marshal, would you save him??? :)

Probably, I would. But the stewards should have disqualified him for it.... As they should else where.
