Should I buy GT5??

Hi,

I have recently purchased a PS3 slim and naturally I want to have the best games for my console. I like racing games but the thing is I have only played Arcade racers till now (NFS series & Burnout), I tried playing Shift (which I know is not this simulation heavy)and failed miserably.

What I am wondering is if there's a learning curve that I can master and enjoy the game or will it just sit in the corner gathering dust. Also the games are pretty expensive in India and I can't afford to buy it just to check it out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, Yes I belive this is a great game to have for the ps3. It grows with you as you play
and you can play at many levels of skill.
 
Depending on level of driver skill the game can be played anywhere from thrash about arcade to semi simulation.

If you stick all the aids on, providing you brake when the racing line tells you too. You cant really go much wrong!
 
GT5 is in my opinion, the best racing game on a console. However, I wouldn't buy it for single player. Online is the point of the game for me, much like CoD.

However, a lot of my gripes with offline is its arcadey nature, so someone who doesn't mind arcade games would probably not be bothered as much.

What I don't like
-Level system, You race for XP which raises your level occasionally. You need high levels to enter certain races and buy (you can drive any car at any level) certain cars.

-Lack of qualify and short races, except for endurance races which can last up to 24 real hours, GT5 races last about 5 laps. You start in the middle of the pack and fight to the front, you've never given the option to qualify or practice like in a real race

-Credits, you need to pay for things, self explanatory. GT5 is pretty expensive though, and earning money to get all the cars can take a very long time. Thankfully, there are short cuts.

-Other, offline mode doesn't have damage and the AI is a little slow

As I said, most of these would fit in to an arcade them, so you mind not mind as much as me.

Online however gives you almost everything you could ever want. You can set the options to basically make the game drive like NFS or have a race that comes close to approximating PC sim realism.

As far as learning curve, there is an option called "Skid Recovery Force" which basically makes the physics easier. You can try that if you don't think you can drive with the full physics.
 
The important thing to remember is that the best way find fun in GT is to take your time to learn proper racing technique. It will be slow at difficult at first, but it can be very satisfying to slowly improve your driving skill and shorten lap times. Gran Turismo doesn't really ever reach an end, where you can say "I did everything that could be done." What that means is that if you take your time to enjoy all the little things, GT5 is great value for your money and will last a long time.

And if you do decide to get GT5, it has one of best communities I have ever seen. It can complain sometimes, but it is generally quite mature and friendly. We are more than willing to help you out in your GT endeavor.
 
Yeah, you should. A very good game and slightly more accessible than SHIFT/SHIFT 2. Only complaint is that its a little short.
 
Best driving game out there now thats not on a PC.
Ton of cars,paints and option's and you can make your own tracks.
Online is good,has bad points but generally pretty solid.
If you have played GT before the learning curve is pretty simple,if not there are many aids to help you out.
In my opinion getting a wheel was my best investment,you can get one for about $125.00 (Driving Force GT) and the fun begins.
If you get the game add me and we can do some online and you can borrow some cars.
Plus this community is pretty good at helping people out,so you started off in the right place.
 
GT5 is (in my opinion) the best allround racing game, for the car lover/collector type. There are driving aids in game that make driving the cars considerably easier to control, you can turn them off as you go along while you improve your driving skills.

The controls work much smoother than in Shift and GT5 works great with the DS3. There are licence and special events in the game that are fun while intending to help you build on your driving skills.

It is a great starting point to get into sim racing, and you can progress with it as your skill increases. A must have title.


I do recommend you read up a little or watch some videos on the basics of racing though, as it will help you greatly in keeping your car from smashing into walls, GT5 is a sim and will feel completely different to the arcade games you are used to. There was a great video on Youtube with Jackie Stewart teaching James May, check it out.
 
Did you expect people who waste their time on the internet, chillen on a forum, strictly dedicated to GT5, to tell you not to buy it?

I fear how little people think for themselves these days. Rent it and try it out. None of us know what you like.

Quite the opposite, just as many people come to this site to moan about not liking GT5 as there are people who are fans of the game. GT5 is without a doubt a must have racing game, many people who were disapointed were expecting miracles from GT5. But not everyone will like it.


If somebody wants to start simulation racing, GT5 is a great place to start because it caters to the novice casual gamer right up to the highly skilled hardcore sim racer.
 
Go and get it. As you mentioned, there is a learning-curve. You'll only have 20.000cr at the start to buy a car, and there are only a few from which a beginner can choose, all under 200hp. Then you can do the licenses and race smaller series which will bring your first prize-money, prize-cars and XP (Experience-points).

Definitely buy GT5! While you're at it pick up MGS4 on the cheap :)

Could not agree anymore with you. There have been plenty of people who came on here just to bash the game. It's all about preference. But this is a good quality game to start your racing simulation life on. Just ease into it.
 
Yes absolutely get it. Awesome game with great replayability and longevity. Come on there are 1000+ cars to collect.

If you're not absolutely horrible behind the wheel of a car, you should be able to handle GT5 with the driving aids turned on. In time, as you adapt and improve, you may eventually wish to gradually toggle aids off one by one, adjusting to driving without them, if you wish.

These were worthless responses. They're utterly oozing with fanboy bias. Any honest rating for the game wouldn't be quite so radiant.

This can't be the "best game that exists" because the best games are generally not racing games. If this is supposed to mean "best racing game that exists", that's a problem because there's superior offerings available on PC. If it's supposed to mean "best console racing game that exists", that's still a problem because there are several ways that Forza Motorsport 3 is superior and because not all players enjoy racing sims, so players enjoying something more like Burnout or Need for Speed versus more simulation-y games won't find GT5 enjoyable at all.

The "best racing game on a console" was a little bit better, but it still ignores stiff competition from FM3. While the driving in FM3 doesn't feel quite as good as GT5, it still does a pretty good job, but FM3 typically surpasses GT5 in pretty much every other regard.
 
NO! Don't buy GT5!

Buy the Gran Turismo 5 Collector's Edition instead :lol: but make sure it's unopen.
