Buy a steering wheel or not?

i don't know if I should spend the money for a steering wheel. Does it help you get faster times in races then the ps2 controller or not. Please help me decide
 
I like playing GT3/4p with the Driving Force Pro. It is alot of fun and seems "more real" (it is still a video game after all). I also like left foot braking.
But!

I've had no luck with the quality of Logitech products. I've owned both the Driving force and Driving force pro wheel. Both have had issues. The wheel on the DF and the pedals on DFP. Logitech has been good with me, replacing things, but still the problems are 100% solved.

A wheel won't make you any faster, regardless of what people say here. Some of the fastest people in OLR (on-line racing) use the good ole' DS2, while others use Momo and other wheels.

it is all personal preference and what you are willing to put up with.

I for one will stick to the DS2, which i have never had a problem with in years. I'll be giving the DFP wheel one last chance with GT4 whenever it comes out, but I am not expecting to go back to a wheel fulltime.
 
I bought the Logitech and never use it because I don't have anywhere good to set it up.

See that is the other issue. No place to fix a wheel really steady. I used a TV table for a while, but that isn't very stable. I tried a table but that required setup each time I wanted to play. Now I just use the lap holder thing, which is the best solution for me.

Now if I had space for one, money isn't the issue, I'd love a racing pod with a real racing seat and belts. It seems like then a wheel would be really cool and it would bring alot ot realism to the game. But I neither have room for that or want to look at it sitting in the living room all the time.

Hi, TalGuy! There's a wheel called: Mad Catz II Universal (approx> $60 Canadian, eh :rolleyes: at Wal-Mart/Future shop) (well worth it)wich works great. The steering wheel and shifter unit, rests steadily enough on your knees, with contoured retractable edges and the pedals, on the ground, also steadily enough with little square rubbers backing . 👍
Then, depending on how smooth you are with the controls and also the set ups you use on it, you will notice a very good difference in your racing performance.
But of course, this is only my opinion, the final choice to make ...it's yours!!

It's a waste of money, honestly, it's fun for about 5 months after that it sits on the ground collecting dust.
 
i say no because it makes it more difficult to drive, and it doest stay in your lap very good. its also confusing while trying to browse.
 
thanks for all the opinions and info so far. i am leaning toward getting a wheel but just wanted some input and info about them from people who have them. If I get one i'm probably going to make my own racing pod out of wood and put it in my basement.
 
Well I bought my DFP yesturday, and I'm having a lot of fun. Though the only problem for me is the find a good spot to setup my wheel.
 
I have a DFP. Even though it's absolutely the best wheel on the market, it still feels more unrealistic to use the wheel than the DS. The electric motor fights your every move. It's totally unlike power or manual steering. The steering ratios change with speed, even on simulation mode. None of this seems to happen with WRC. I think that's really annoying because this wheel is designed for GT3.

The stick shifter is too short travel & it's behind the steering wheel for some reason. The shifter should be on a separate unit. Also, the paddles are on the steering wheel. They should be on the steering column.

I can't find a good place to put it either. It's on a table, so I have to bend over to use it.

The wheel itself on the DFP is good, I'd love it in my own car. However the pedals are absolute crap and utterly worthless.

I tackled the problem the other way around, I wanted a wheel because some PC games absolutely require a driving wheel ( Grand Prix legends, Prototype-C mod for EA F1 challenge 99-02 and maybe Richard Burns Rally ). Then after visiting various forums, I realised that a PC driver was available for the Logitech Driving Force so I got that model and can use it with both my PC and , as a fringe benefit, with my PS2.
Contrary to some PC games, no PS2 racing game absolutely requires a wheel in order to be playable because every PS2 racing game has been developed for the DS2.
Si , if you only have a PS2 but no computer, a Driving Force ( normal or pro ) is nice to have, but it's not a must.
Just my experience, but I noticed that for the B license all gold on some test ( with shaprp turns ) I had better time with the DS2 while on some other test my time was better with the driving wheel
So, a wheel is nice to have for the PS2, but if you need to take a 2nd mortgage on your house or sell an organ in order to get one, don't do it
 
I bought the DF Pro and it sat in my floor for months because I couldn't use it effectively in my lap, and the table I attached it too would move around under the force. I used the dualshock until I bought something to mount the wheels and pedals on.

Now the DF Pro is the greatest thing since... forever. People say it won't make you faster, but I started playing my old time trials, ones I had gotten the lowest times on, and began to beat them. Consistently.

different people will give you different suggestions. heres mine...

i would say buy the wheel, make sure you get it from a store that you will be able to return it if you need to, try it out, and if you dont like it return it.

thats what i did. right now i have the wheel and have had it for about a week. im not that impressed with it. i drive cars in real life and race autox and the DFP is overrated. maybe it will be better with gt4 and 900 degree mode, but for now im returning it and getting my money back.
 
Can you use a USB Extension cable with it? If so, have you noticed any lag in response time, when using an extension?

I play GT on a bigscreen, and my PS2 sits atop it. Therefore, the cable has to drop down about 4 feet, and back a good 5. I dont think the cable that comes with the DFP is that long.
 
Is this a trick question. IF you have the means, certainly buy the wheel. It's just plain better then the DS2. No real expaination needed. If you can get it, get it. You'll be happy you did.
 
Don't think that it is worth the money.

Its been said above : you will get bored with it and it isn't that cheap!
 
I just got the driving force pro and its brilliant it gives a relistic feel to the game its a bit hard to drift with though.The best thing to get is the playseat go to www.playseats.nl and just look at it its a bucket seat with the pedals and steering wheel stuck on it i got one for 400 euros (the money we use in ireland) youll be dying to get its ive had it for a few months and i cant stop using it.But it will need time to get use to.Its fully adjustable.My da got it at the RAC rally in britian because hes into rallying and hes a rally driver himself he has a GPA impreza.
 
I bought the wheel a month or so ago, and bough a playseat last week. The two combined make GT3 an entirely different game. I can't describe the difference a good force-feedback wheel and racing seating position make...
