Should I get Vista?

OK a few months ago I bought a Vaio FE790 and I got an email from Sony saying that if I register before March 31st that I qualified for a free upgrade to Microsoft’s Vista Operating System. So as the title asks should I get Vista?

Thanks,

No. Sell your Vaio and get a Macbook.

In all seriousness, register for it. You can't go wrong with a free upgrade.

its up to you. I've tried vista but I didn't like it at all. You need ALOT of ram to run it. Also I hear people are having lots of problems with it...

Well, considering he bought a new Vaio recently, I think it's safe to say that he has enough RAM.

I say go for it. You still have your original XP disc right? If you don't like Vista, then slap XP back on it. Like Duck said, it's a free upgrade so I'd take it. If you look beyond the bling, Vista has many minor but very useful additions. Personally, I prefer it over XP.

Yes, get the upgrade while the offer lasts. Then install it in September.

I wouldn't upgrade to Vista just because of those freaking extra-specially-pretentious Micro$oft ads where they compare the first time you use Vista with the moon shots, all kinds of athletic feats, etc.

Make sure your printers, whatever are supported by Vista. When XP came out, you could get away with W2K drivers for a lot of devices. Not with Vista; can't use XP drivers.
Unless you have some sort of specialized device, you should be OK. Complaints come from 3 main sources. First, the whiners because it's "different," they don't know how to get to their screens. ("Where's the screen saver?" "How do I set my background?") Second, upgraded on insufficient hardware. (Not you, probably.) Third, other devices or apps don't work. (Printers, tuner cards, USB camera interface, and so on. No way to check without trying, in a lot of cases. Try to go to the mfr and ask.)

For 45 bucks you can't go wrong, even if you just sit on the disk until you have more confidence in the system and its device support.

When it says "Upgrade to Vista for $45," does it mean Home Basic (ie. total crap) or, say, Premium or Ultimate?
I've played with most of the versions of Vista so far (haven't seen Business yet), and I am actually looking at them in a positive tone, but the Home Basic is essentially useless. Uses up more resources but doesn't really have that much on XP SP2.
Either way, try it for a bit. If you don't like it, hold out for a little while until SP1 comes out.

OK well it looks like I was wrong again its free for Vista Premium but I have one small problem....I went through the steps entered my info and then get to the end and it says that I timed out and that I needed to log back in so I went back trough and reentered my info until I got the the part where I have to enter my COA when I hit next I get a message that says that my COA has been consumed and now I have called Sony 5 time 3 of the 5 time they hung up on my, one time the told me that I had to talk to Microsoft and then after calling them they tell me that I have to call this other place, so I do no one answers the phone then I call Microsoft and then I'm told that only Sony can fix the problem. I call Sony back up then I am given another phone number to call, I call them and get the answering machine. So I left a message with them and I'm waiting to hear back and the thing that sucks about this is that the offer ends tomorrow!

I think I'm SOL with getting my free upgrade to Vista....

Actually, when I installed Vista on my older computer (about 4 years old now :S), I couldn't find any Vista sound card drivers, so I ended up getting an XP driver, and installing it in compatibility mode for XP SP2.
Worked like a charm. :)

No.

Just No. Dont Do It. No Matter How Much You Think You Need Vista, You Dont. Dont Get It.

OK I was able to get in my order in time (woot) now for my next question....will I have to reinstall the stuff that I have on my computer when I upgrade?

I don't know how well the Vista upgrade works, but your best bet would be to back up everything and perform a clean install.

Even if you only have the upgrade disc, there is a workaround. Microsoft confirms that the workaround will work and they will not patch it to prevent it from working, but I will forgo posting it. It's posted on many websites, however, and finding it shouldn't be a problem.

If you choose to upgrade instead of a clean install, I would still suggest on making a backup of all your important files. Many things can go wrong during the upgrade procedure.
