Should I stop driving with the 3rd person view?

I can't not use 3rd person view...it's the one I've got used to using throughout my time playing driving games, and now anything else makes me drive even worse...yeah...I'm not great lol
 
This is actually pretty strange for me.
Before GT5 I ALWAYS used the 3rd person view, ALL the time.
When I got Prologue I think I changed it and now I CANNOT drive with 3rd person view, it's impossible :D
I mainly use 1st person view where you can't see the car at all although I'm trying to use cockpit view as much as possible on Premium cars since I think it adds to the feeling.

And there ya go: It's all in what you get comfortable with. The poster earlier who said he just wanted to ram anyone NOT using cockpit view is a dolt; sure, it might be a more "realistic" view in his opinion, but last time I checked, I CAN'T drive my car while sitting on my couch, ten feet from my "dashboard", and I sure as hell can't drive it with a DS3 controller! "Realism" really only goes so far in a game that asks you to complete a 24 hour endurance race in one stint as the only driver. Yeah, THAT's realistic, isn't it? :)
 
I use chase cam and have got into the top 100 with a few cars on Prologue time trial leaderboards.

Before spec 3 update I managed to place an R8 13th at Eiger...using pad and chase cam.

I've never seen anybody play in 3rd person that knows how to race.

I use the bonnet view, otherwise I'm miles behind.

Me too. I'd love to use the cockpit view but 1) it's really tough, 2) absolutely cannot get used to RHD and 3) I'm a creature of habit and need one view that will work on all cars and since the cockpit view only works on premium that's the final straw for me. I find my best view is the hood view. Bumper cam works well, too but I hate not knowing where my wheels are, it causes me problems with tapping grass and bumping people. Of course, the disadvantage to the hood view is no rear view mirror but I live with that because it's clearly my most comfortable and fastest view. I wish I could add a mirror to it, though. Those little bumps from behind can be really devastating when you don't see them coming.
 
I would try the different views, practice with them, and compare lap times with the chase cam. Make a decision based on that.
 
I only use third person views on arcade racing games since you dont have to be precise with cornering and such. But with GT5, cockpit and bumper view is the best for me.

In real life also drive my car inside view , i dont put my head outside the window.
i respect everyone , but i really dont like ppl playin this game with one ds3 , external views , automatic gears and all aids on.
if someone give me the oportunity to ram them down and i will.

If players like you didn't exist, online gaming would be about 6 million times better.

Just because you say "i respect everyone" doesn't give you a free pass to say or do anything after that.

The real reason you ram people is because you're slow and can't win any races; you compare GT5/cockpit view with driving in real life.
 
To me, the cockpit view is the most arcade like. When using the cockpit view I see my steering wheel and hands in front of me then I see another set of fake hands and a fake steering wheel in front of me on the screen. How is that real? The only way I can see it being realistic at all is with a DS3 and sitting 2' from your TV, but to each their own. If you like it, use it, but don't ridicule others for doing it differently.
 
i had the same problems ages ago on like Need For Speed or something :P i switched to bumper cam and i just find its so much more precise when you learn how wide your car is mainly coz you can stick to the lines so much easier
 
I personally only use the cockpit view, or the hood cam if I am in a "standard car". Up until GT5 though, I always used the third parson view, but after adjusting myself to the cockpit view, I can't really go back.

The cockpit view takes getting used to. I have to do about 30 laps around my best track before I really got the hang of it. But like I said, once you get used to it, you won't want to race any other way.
 
I have always used 3rd person, cause its what im most comfortable with. I have on occasion used the cockpit view(if the car has it) just because of realism. but you get a much wider view of whats going on around you in thrid person... just myopinion though.
 
In 3rd person view you don't get a good sense of speed. I'll highly recommend using bumper view or cockpit view. I use bumper view mostly, makes me faster and cleaner.
 
bumper cam for me all the way. I also drive without a speedometer and all the other info on. 3rd person actually changes where I brake and accelerate slightly & doesn't feel right to me.
... but that's just me.
Whatever makes you fastest.
 
for me it's game specific... GT5 I always play with Bumper or hood cam. 3rd person just doesn't work. But on a game like Dirt2... that's all i used, because u needed too see how loose the tails got.
 
I am not sure how anybody drives a car without a rear view mirror. IMO it's a noob move and makes you a hazard on the track. So yes, stop driving in 3rd person and pull over for faster traffic.

3rd-person view and a Dualshock for me! It's gotten the job done since GT2, so why change? :)

This is my exact outlook on this question too. I use the controller that came with my PS3 and the same view I have used since Gran Turismo on PS1.
 
In GT2 and GT3 I always used first person view. On GT4 I always drove using that camera that sits over the car. And now I'm back to first person view. But somehow I can only drive my X1 okay if I use third person view, which is something I NEVER used. Go figure! XD
 
First person definitely leads to better times, and it's easier to see the line.

I play 3rd person, just because I can still win all the single player races, and I like seeing the car I'm driving. Been like this since GT1.

What I love is how some people say "oh, if you were racing for real, you wouldn't sit behind your car, you would be inside it". I suppose they don't understand that playing a video game and racing for real are two different things. If I wanted to race for real, I wouldn't be playing the video game, now would I...

Why would you need a mirror in 3rd person view if you can see the cars right behind you? I think bumper cam view is an unsafe way to drive, without mirrors and all, but probably gives you the best vantage point of the driving line. The cockpit view is the most realistic, but this is a video game, and you can't turn your neck left and right and so something like the windshield framing can get in your way of vision. The 3rd person view probably makes it harder to hit the braking zones, but if you get used to it, it's probably the safest, funnest and most beautiful way to drive in a video game. And if anyone wants to see how slow I am, add my PSN and race me, let's see how bad my 3rd person view really is after all. :)

you haven't met me then.

I use the 3rd person view because it shows tire smoke, and it shows body roll, and is the best view to drive with imo. It's harder to be quick, but if your good, the 3rd person view will probably make you the quickest. This is my conclusion on the matter.

I still don't know where people are getting this idea that bumper view has no mirrors. Maybe I'm crazy, or maybe I've stumbled upon a "secret setup" that nobody else has ever figured out, but I've been using this view - WITH rearview mirror - ever since the original Gran Turismo premiered on the PS1.

I realized I'm not as fast as some people when racing online. My lines are good, but something is making me slow. I always end up in 2nd or 3rd place often and I've been playing this game for a while. There are some pretty elite drivers out there, but I'm not there yet. Is the behind the car camera angle to blame? If anyone uses this view, please offer some imput on the matter. Much appreciated.

There could be a multiple number of reasons you aren't as fast as other people. For example, I'm not as fast as a person using a wheel as I play with the original sixaxis controller. I do well enough, but it doesn't bother me if I can't win an online race, we can't win them all. Over the years of playing the GT series, I've learned how to race in all configurations, including cockpit view. For offline play, I mostly use the 3rd person because I like seeing the car I'm driving. To be faster, I use the hood cam for races like the FGT series. I am approximately 1.5 seconds per lap faster with hood cam than 3rd person. Fastest Cote D'Azur lap time 3rd person 1:15.846, hood cam 1:14.260 in the FGT. I could probably drop my 3rd person time down some, but I don't think it would be consistant.

This is just my personal observation and I think it's best if you drive how you most enjoy driving, but practice using all the views and you'll find one that best suits your driving style. Most importantly, HAVE FUN even if you don't take that checkered flag. :)
 
3rd person since the original Need for speed on the ps1.Its just way more fun for me.The only problem is some of the cars in GT5 sound terrible that way.
