Should most (if not all) cars be unlocked in Arcade Mode?

If everything were made available, even if just in Arcade Mode, I'd loose focus, and I think that focus along with desire and disappointment, help to maintain GTs high replay value.

I don't want anything unlocked, cars, free credits or car transfers.
I got rid of my PS2 and copy of GT3 & 4 way to early.
Prologue was nice but I've played it to death now.
The Time trial is fantastic and I'm having lots of fun with it.
But when I finally get my hands on GT5, well I won't be rushing through anything, it's been way too long coming for that.

I'd like to have most cars and tracks unlocked in arcade mode. Maybe leaving out only special cars, those you win as "prizes" in GT mode, but all purchasable cars should be unlocked from the start, or at least unlocked by class (once you buy a Mercedes, every same-level car should be unlocked), not being bought one by one.

The reason for that is if I don't want to purchase a specific car in GT mode because I'd rather spend my hard-earned money in another car or upgrades, I think I should be still able to race it when I'm doing a quick game.

Having the option to tune your own cars from GT mode, and then race them in Arcade, gives motivation enough to "earn" those cars in my opinion.

For multiplayer split-screen it would be awesome, since sometimes it's fun to do gimmicky races with cars I'd never even think of wasting money on in GT mode (like Hyundai Coupé, Fiat Barchetta, old Honda Civics, or whatever).

That said, I don't think I'm even going to touch Arcade mode until I'm well into GT mode so I will have something unlocked... but if I don't ever want to buy a BMW M5 (money and time are limited, and I will not be able to buy EVERY car, not even most of them I'm afraid), why can't I race it against my friends if I want to?

My only request for Arcade Mode is that it shouldn't be relegated to being "filler" like it was in GT4.

I miss being able to run all the races in Arcade mode in the older games and unlocking cars along the way, then getting a cool prize (ending credits!) after you've beaten everything.

I dont think they should all be unlocked from the second you start the game. I think the cars should gradually get unlocked the further into the game you go. One thing I would like to see added but isn't really necesary is a test drive function before you buy a car to make sure you are making the right choice , but give a time limit on the test drive on a track thats twisty with a bit of a straight way to test the handling and speed.

Hopefully it is to late now with the game mostly completed. However I would settle on a compromise. Meaning if arcade mode was similar to I think GT3 where you had to unlock tracks and cars in arcade mode. Meaning complete a certain amount of races in arcade at variuos difficulty levels it rewards you with more tracks and cars. However if they had this option, I would want it tied in with Sim mode. Meaning at certain percentages of being complete in Sim mode tracks and cars are unlocked for arcade or at least use cars in your garage for single player.

However, I do think it would be a good thing if they got rid of the rotating used inventory, THAT is a waste of time.

How would the used car dealers work then? Just have all of the same cars for sale all the time? How does that resemble a real dealership? What other way is there to replicate how used dealers work? New inventory always comes in. Unless you want to get rid of the used car lots altogether. In that case your opinion is null.

Not everyone has the time or inclination to play through the whole game unlocking everything. Forcing this sector of the market to only get a handful of cars for their money smacks to me of elitism and "GTFO N00B!"

I reckon having all the cars unlocked in arcade mode, from day 1, makes a lot of sense by way of making the game more fun for a whole bunch of people. If you're serious about the game what the hell are you doing playing arcade mode anyway? Just do what I do and ignore it. I'll never know or care how many cars are unlocked but I'm sure a lot of people will be delighted if there's more and good luck to them too.

I'd like to still be unlocking new things a year after I start playing (although it'd be a couple of weeks or maybe just days for the guys playing 24/7).
I don't really get this trophy thing on PSN and I'd much rather look on cars people have online as trophies instead if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I hear ya. I think a good balance might be if online is linked to GT mode, in professional with arcade cars used in amateur. I mean who on this board ever goes near the amateur races online, right? And rest assured all the cars you see online in the pro circuit will be earned, bought and paid for - that way we all gets to stay 1337

yep, elitism. What every online game is all about.

Yep, I want to see other racers on track with cars I don't have yet and wonder how/where they got that from so I have to work through GT mode a bit more to get my hands on it.

personally I prefer it if not everyone had the access to all the cars at the same time, maybe if you could buy and sell cars online that would be cool

and if cars actually aged with wear and tear, and mileage, even better. Then all kinds of wonderful will happen :)

2nd hand tuning parts to be sold online for cheaper than brand new in the game would be extra cool

I think that only part of the cars should be unlocked in Aracde, and PD should choose them carefully in order to give you a "taste" of what you can get if you will keep playing in GT Mode - because that's part of the hear-n-soul of GT series.

For those people who would like to test drive a car before they actually buy it I have 2 solutions - first for the user/driver and the second for PD:
1) Before you buy a car (especially the expensive ones - which could turn to be a failure to help you pass one of the events/licenses/races) you can save the game, exit to PS3 main screen, then copy the game data to a temporary user. Go back to the game and buy that car, if you don't like it (for now at least) then exit and copy from the temporary user onto the current user. Of course this is not simple but for expensive cars it could be helpful.
2) A solution to PD is to let the player take a car for a test-drive but the player must pay a fee (from his credits) like renting the car, so you can not test-drive a car if you can't afford it - this is the "real driving simulator" - right???

+1

I agree, there should only be a selection of cars to start with in arcade mode to keep the focus on GT and online mode. Cars should be gained in GT and online modes which are then added to the arcade garage, if I'm being totally honest I hardly ever used arcade mode before and doubt I will with GT5.

I like the idea of paying for test drives, it would certainly help with buying decisions. To begin with I'll probably use my GT5P save to transfer cash and/or cars to one of my other PSN id's for test drives and start GT mode from scratch on my main PSN id. I want to feel like I've worked for my cars and earned them, it gives them a greater value. Once my main GT mode save is a higher value I'd definitely copy it to one of my other PSN id's to test more expensive cars...this is assuming you can copy saves, not all games allow it! It doesn't bear thinking about losing your GT5 save if you couldn't back it up :ouch:

The casual gamer (someone who only plays GT for an hour or two once every couple of weeks) might disagree with you there. They maybe just want to take a Lambo or a Dodge Viper round the ring once in a while. Whether or not you find this acceptable in your 8-hours per day habitual gaming frenzy it probably represents a fair slice of PD's customer base and, without those sales the game doesn't make them nearly as much money.

Now if a casual gamer were to find out the only car he could actually pick up and drive in his shiny new $50 video game, was some crappy little toyota prius and, in order to get more he'd have to devote the next week of his life to constantly playing the damn thing he might decide there are better purchasing decisions available to him.

Don't knock the toe dippers, people, I suspect that demographic is a fairly sizeable percentage of the market and more sales/money = better for PD = better for us in the long run.

You've got a point there and I think KY has realised it too judging by a few comments he's made in interviews that the way a lot of people play games has changed and they don't have as much time to dedicate to them so GT5 may adapt to reflect that.

I wish I did have the time for 8 hour gaming sessions now but at best I grab a couple of hours a few times a week due to work, wife, kids, family, DIY... When GT4 came out I had no commitments and all the free time in the world so could easily get a few endurance races and tournaments done a week, that isn't going to happen this time round!

I guess it doesn't really matter if there is a huge selection of the cars available in arcade mode from day 1 if you're going to spend most of your time in GT and online mode.

Yup, that's my point exactly. Also the two should be kept separate so that I don't run across a bunch of part-time n00bs when I go online but other than that I have no problem with the game having a whole section (arcade mode) tailored to people who aren't as "hardcore" as most of the peeps on this forum.

Following on from what content should be available from day 1 I made the below post a while ago in the thread about game saves in the middle of endurance races...

I think Dara O'Briain made a very good point on Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe programme that if we have bought the game we shouldn't have its content restricted. His point was he couldn't do some driving mission on GTA so never got to Manhattan Island and was effed off that he was missing out on part of the game he had paid for.

In a similar way it would do my head in if I couldn't take part in endurance races because I haven't got the time to complete them in one session and couldn't save the race part way through. B-spec isn't a very fun way of getting the result and I'm far too protective of my PS3 to leave it running overnight anyway.

Hopefully PD has been listening and has included this feature.

I guess there would be a lot of people who would feel cheated out of content if they didn't have the time or inclination to grind through GT mode and therefore never got to drive many of the cars on the disc. It doesn't hurt anyone if all the cars are in arcade mode but you still have the progression in GT mode which goes against my initial view but then that's what discussion is for isn't it :)

It's easy to get tunnel vision with these things. Just because I will happily spend whole days trying to get a gold medal in whatever license challenge I'm stuck on, even though I already have the silver and the events are unlocked anyway, just on the damn principle of the thing, it doesn't mean that some casual punter who shelled out the same half ton of his equally hard earned spendybucks just cos it had a Gallardo on the front cover should be forced to do the same.

Crossword puzzles have the answers upside down. If you choose not to look at them does it matter that they're there?

Anyway, having said all that, I've long reckoned there should be a test drive option in GT and the whole "backing up your save game thing" is pretty much just jumping through hoops to achieve the same as if all the cars were in arcade to try anyway. I reckon it's win/win

I myself don't have much time playing as well (family, kids, stuff, etc.) I play 1-2 hours usually starting at 11:00pm (in case I'm not tired already), even though I still think that Arcade shall not have all the cars available. As I said above I think that PD should carefully choose the cars to have different cars types (at least not the special ones) - similar to GT4 style.
It is similar to a situation were you buy COD Modern Warfare 2, and in the Campaign mode you can just pick up one of the missions and play it even if you didn't finish all the ones before that.
I know that with my available time I probably won't "finish" GT5 (finish = having all cars) until GT6 will be available (on a second thought - 5 years might be enough...) but it is more fun when you progress with your own pace.

This is a tricky question. I'd love to be able to drive any car in the game from day one, but then again, the difficult pursuit of such awesome cars makes GT what GT is. And has been.

^ while I agree, I don't see why having the cars in arcade from the get-go, changes your pursuit of opening them all in GTMode. Arcade=/GTMode.

I think it would be nice to have zero cars in arcade mode until you bought/unlocked them in GT mode. Would be nice to test a car on a given circuit if you had the sufficient funds in GT mode.

I think a rent/lease feature would be quite cool, if this was implemented online aswell, say if you wanted to do a manufacturer event then you could rent a car off a friend for 24 hours for a fee. This working aswell, as yossigab said, to test drive or try out cars. I think it would be good :)
