Well, that's the headlines anyway. Apparently some nuts out there are really hardcore against Auto Shows:

AutoShutDown.org
This website is a parody of the Chicago Auto Show website.

We are in no way sponsored by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the Chicago Auto Show.

Why are we doing this? Because the automobile and oil industries put on the Auto Show to glorify automobiles. Because we don't need any more cars in Chicago. Because we believe that our children deserve to live in a world where 43,000 Americans, and a million people worldwide, are not killed by cars every year, and where congestion, smog, global warming, and urban sprawl do not threaten their health and their economy. Our city, our nation, and our planet deserve better.

We're also doing this for Maya.

Um, right. That's not all, though. WindingRoad reports:

Winding Road
In addition to the assortment of automobiles at this year’s Chicago Auto Show, there will be some bicycles. But they weren’t invited. Bikegeeks.org – an initiative to free up congested roadways – has slated to divert Chicago Auto Show attendees from the show through a peaceful protest.

The geeks on bike are apparently in cahoots with the Auto Show Shutdown Association (ASSA). Yeah, we’ve never heard of it either. But, the ASSA says – on its Web site – that they are the nation’s oldest and largest (maybe the only) auto show counter-propaganda organization.

Been to the Chicago Auto Show? Have you ever seen these spandex-clad protestors?

Let us know in the comments.

Ironically, all those bikers who want to shut down the auto show to reduce congestion. . . are congesting all the roads:

Heh.

Thoughts?

Wow. Lame.

And how many of the people in these groups own cars? I’m going to suggest that there is probably quite a bit of hypocrisy there.

so what about all the green/alternative/small cars that are the latest fad it seems? they want everyone to stick with the same old technology year in year out? Auto shows let auto makers know how people feel about their designs/technologies. In short, auto shows usually make cars better

Screw these hippies. I'm going to buy a gas guzzler just to spite them. I'm going to light gasoline on fire just to blow the fumes in their faces. And maybe I'll run over their bicycles. I haven't decided yet.

Leave my auto shows alone!

you could design some sort of inefficient vehicle that actually runs on gasoline and bicycles!! 💡

Meh. Tell 'em to move to France. People don't use cars there. I still don't get the whole of their argument.

I'll go celebrate the automobile despite them.

QFT. These people must be really bored. Maybe they should get jobs?

Oh, boy...these guys give cyclists like my brother a bad name...My Brother's an avid MTB rider, rides some local trails and was in a race recently. also works at a bike shop. but he likes cars. He'd like a Forester...don't have the money. He's currently driving a Chevrolet Celebrity, still running strong with nearly 200K on the clock.

But he thinks the Prius Ugly.

(I wonder if these guys are roadies or MTB riders?)

Definitely roadies. I live with a bunch of bike messengers. While they aren't extremists like this, they still wear shirts that say "This is my ****ing lane too!" and I think they have ground up bike parts in their veins instead of normal blood.

Think about why they chose to demonstrate at an auto show. Where else are you going to find an event or convention completely revolving around cars. Go to a hipster neighborhood in your city, there is nothing but bicycle propaganda and anti-car culture. There's bike film festivals and blocked off streets on weekends. This is nothing new folks.

What about all the emissions created during the production of Lycra? I say we go and protest at a bike show and demand the banning of bike shorts.

Idiots. What are they going to do when they want to go somewhere 3,000 miles away? Bike? HAHA, I'd love to see that! Plane? But that isn't eco-friendly.

Screw 'em. I love how these hippies even go so far as to ignore all the recent advances in this industry.

Dad and I will be happy to park the Avalanche next to them and proceed to leave them in a cloud of smoke while getting 1 MPG, sucking down quarter-pound cheesburgers, throwing the styrofoam containers right out the side, and then proceeding to wipe our mouths with the American flag... And there isn't a G'D thing they can do about it...

Piss on 'em all!

===

On that note: While I appreciate their opinions, as they are entitled to them, I think they're going about it the wrong way. The "glorification" of the automobile is nothing new in this country, really, nothing new around the world. They need to get over themselves first and foremost in order to get their point across.

Want to make a point? Hand out fliers about alternative fuels and other "green" vehicles at the show... People will listen.

That is lame.. and completely hypocritical. And when the companies make better cars it's never in the news..

I'll resurrect my ear-crushing, fire breathing, carbon belching monster of a Chevrolet just to spite them. :D

I second YSSMAN on that. There's no point in getting people to change when someone is being an ass about it.

I should have borrowed my brother's bike rack and driven up there with his MTBs, and drive past the crowds revving my engine. (All 1.6 liters of it, but, hey, it's carbureted, and I'm thinking the Cat's about burned out. That'll be dirty enough.)

High-Test
And when the companies make better cars it's never in the news..

Naw, It's in the news. Just not in their news.

I suppose you could say that this is.... ASSAnine? :D

Cars are responsible for approximately 11% of the world's carbon output.
Electricity production accounts for nearly 40%! I hope these people shut off ALL of their lights in their studio apartments before they bike to work.
End.

I think Scoobys are the official car of the mountain Bike crowd. Both the guys I go with have Outbacks in their family, and there are usually a few others in the parking lot too. Those and trucks.

I should get my friend to load up our bikes and take us to a show in his brother's Tacoma.

There is a big difference between Mountain bikers, BMX-ers, decked out road riders and hippy spandex-loving ghetto bike commuters. I'm sure these are all the hippy type.

Naw, It's in the news. Just not in their news.[/QUOTE]
