Slipstream in GT5

Best news in the last couple of days! This is actually gameplay related, so i´m glad they listened to us!

Once again, complaining, when it´s fair, it´s a good thing.

It´s great that the text indicates a possible slider.

We might need that to simulate proper draft for different types of series.

Drafting is completely different from a F1 to a Nascar car. Hopefully the slider will help balance those differences. 👍

That is a crazy idea. If there is a need to implement something like that then it means their physics model is broken. Slipstream is NOT totally different in F1 compared to nascar, the air and laws of physics are the same no matter what car you are driving.

There needs to be a slider (on online private rooms only imo), because I doubt they will put it in 100% realistic. I hope they will have it fully realistic also in GT mode, but as I said I doubt it.
Having the slider doesnt mean their gameplay is broken. It gives us, who might play the game differently than 95% of the general players do, a chance to get the racing we are after.

I agree that their physics model is flawed if you have to use sliders to adjust it to your tastes. (Arcade anyone?)

Again, you are correct that air and the laws of physics apply to both types of cars equally.

However, due to the way their body is shaped, the extent of the advantage that slipstream gives to the driver, is affected. Not by a lot I don't think, but to a noticeable amount. I could be wrong, this is my humble opinion.

Agreed, slipstream effect is the same for any type of car on any track, only thing that alters it is the specific aerodymanics of every chasis.

After permanent ABS has been finally erased with Spec III update in Prologue, making slipsteam realistic is my last wish come true regarding actual driving in GT series.

Although I understand many does not actually care about both, but it is nice to know Kaz did't jump on mainstream-train of last decade bust gone further to making both sides of consumers sastisfied.

Slipstream being able to be turned on and off would be just awkward. :boggled:

Slipstream off would ruin the realism pretty badly, and would make races on NASCAR and the Test Course boring.

After reading all your posts, I hope you don't mind if I give my $.02

I've driven a few cars on road courses near me....an Evo....a Honda....nothing crazy powerful.

I have yet to experience any effect of a draft or 'using the tow' of the car ahead of me no matter the speed (up to ~150 in the Evo, 125 Honda) or the size of the car I'm following.

On the other hand, I've gotten a tow from a Cappucino going around 75mph in GT4 and GT5p. In my opinion, this isn't incredibly realistic.

While I believe the effects of tow in the GT series is too strong, I think it'd be greatly missed if completely turned off. As mentioned in multiple posts before mine, some of the greatest overtakes in racing have occured after using a tow down a straightaway.

That's why we want it to be realistic (not turned off) 👍 If the tow would be like gt5p, none of the overtakes in history would mean anything, as it would be happening 100 times / race..

Still, I don't believe they'll do it 100% realistic (many reasons). That's why imo we would benefit from it being adjustable in online private rooms.

In Multiplayer it should give the possibility to disable the slipstream! We drive many cups and annoy us there much about the Slipstream!

I'm all for more slipstream events (remember the missions from GT4?) and by completing them you gain the ultimate slipstream machine, the Peniscarolo!

I think some of you aren't as good at GT5 as you think you are. Everybody trying to outdo one another with how many assists they want turned off. Most of you need the draft just to be competative. Be honest with yourselves.

The slipstream in this game does indeed destroy any hope of serious racing. It should be severely toned down, or have a new Setting. (something like Standard/Realism)

There have been many times this unreal slipstream effect has frustrated me and others online.

Examples:

On Kart Races, the slipstream effect renders any superior driving skills useless. The low speeds of the Kart truly show how pathetic this slipstream is. All you have to do is leech behind the 1st place and fly past him in the last straight. If you don't, others will.

Being clearly faster than someone, I overtake him in a technical section, only to have that person regain his position by flying by me on the next straight, making me waste the time trying to pass him again fairly in the following lap. This is especially annoying when you are trying to get closer to the 1st place, and some guy in 5th is holding you back.

On Nürburgring, a very narrow track, where you must be careful overtaking, it isn't very motivating being able to overtake someone in the downhill section, only to have them make up something like 100 meters on the final straight, and flying past me at a ridiculous speed difference. (same cars)

I see people begging for new cars, new tracks, for cars to be turned to premium, when it is things like this that make or brake a game like Gran Turismo.

It can't be a hard thing for PD to fix.

100% agree.
It is nice to have 1000 cars and 1000 tracks and realistic graphics, but in the end physics is the more important thing in game. Physics determines the character or feeling of the game. They sold to us the "real driving simulator"... So I think we all wanted a real simulation... A real feeling while driving.

I'm being deadly serious when I say this: I would rather GT5 have no slipstream than it's current unrealistic slipstream.

The slipstream in this game does indeed destroy any hope of serious racing.

👍

I'm going to answer 'yes and no'.

The slipstreaming is great for low power cars (eg in shuffle racing) but totally insane for fast cars.

Eg in a shuffle race it takes almost all the straight at Rome to overtake a car, when on HSR in a ZR1 it can add 30-40mph more speed before the banked curve.

I say, keep it as it is, but lower the scaling due to speed.

GT5, The Real Cartoon Draft Simulator!

PD = :dunce:

I agree we should have options to set it to Realistic or Arcade, like we can with the Grip options.

👍

However, to play devils advocate, it does make for a more exciting race with the daft draft as you get more overtaking action.

:sly:

Ya, the slipstream is nuts in GT5, but its still an awesome game.

The on/off and sliders settings for the slipstream is just a bad idea. Rather it stay how it is than to have settings.

Would just like the slipstream toned down in GT6 for me would be enough.

Quoting myself:

Just to make an example (NASCAR at Indianapolis) - This clip shows how hard it is to pass at Indy with 2 pretty even cars. Slip stream had little to no factor. Starting at 2:30 - Mark Martin was about
2-4 car lengths behind Jimmie Johnson. That went on til' the last lap. Martin never made the pass.

About the speed: IRL, these cars reach Turn 1 in qualifying trim at around 200-205 mph. This would be a tad slower in Race Trim and about the same with the draft.

Now in GT5: I've had my share of racing at Indy online with NASCARS and it is just pure mayhem when it comes to the speed we reach before commencing braking. If you exit off a turn coming into a long
straight at around 160-170, expect to see your speed reach 230+ with a car infront of you towing you along into the next turn. I find this ridiculously absurd (and laughable playing demolition derby online). By the
way, regardless of the tires you use, you will still have the same effect. In regards to the realism of the tires, here's an independent test i made prior to the release of GT5 (click here).

Furthermore, being an online series admin, i personally have a lot of experience pertaining to the draft. It's always been a complaint from all of the participants, especially when we go to draft happy tracks
such as Monza and Le Mans. It affects the dynamics of the race as a whole. If you lose the tow of the draft, then goodbye to you. Likewise, if you are leading and you are alone and turning the fastest and most
consistent laps all day, 2 drivers in tandem from 10 seconds back can tag along and catch you within a few laps.

I really hope that PD is looking at this issue. I personally would like an option to choose between realistic and the way it is now, just so it can cater to both audiences, the casual and the hardcore racers.

I actually like GT5 drafting. It's funny pushing the car to the very limit...even if it's unrealistic.

Maybe it's not in Arcade Mode anymore, because after weeks and weeks of just tooting around in it, I haven't experience the old crazy speed boosts.
