Jordan,

i hope you can help.

We seem to have a really slow loading page on page 1 of our series thread.
OUR CURRENT PAGE
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/thre...s-monday-nights-18-30uk.348096/#post-11468923
It has a lot of material on it, but not more than other series i have run before.

So to try and speed the load page up in preperation for our next series, i have been through everything
with the BB code editor to get rid of all the hidden things that seem to find there way in there.
I have also removed the fromatting on almost all the posts.
And removed many many pictures, in preparation for our new series, yet the new series page still takes a long time
to load up.
OUR NEW PAGE CLEANED WITH ALMOST NO DATA
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/thre...s-monday-nights-18-30uk.350600/#post-11582170

if you could advise any help, that would be great.
Regards
Steve

How strange, both of them take an age to load on 3 computers, all different networks, and even on my phone.

Did you try both the links ?

Did you try both the links ?
On my phone, your second link loaded in about 15 seconds. Your first one, I stopped after 60.

I'm betting you need to do a bit more cleanup on the tags:

Both of your threads load fairly quickly for me, rendering in ~1 second and fully loading in 3-6 seconds, even on my mobile device (iPhone 6S).

When I took a closer look at the page, though, I think I found the problem: the Spoiler tags don't work the way you might think they do. Although they visually "hide" content from the user, browsers still download and render all of the content they contain — including YouTube embeds.

Both of your threads contain 10 embedded YouTube videos, which are very heavy and consume a considerable amount of resources while they are downloaded and rendered (even though you can't actually see them). This can be fixed by creating a link to the videos on YouTube instead of allowing them to be embedded.

All of the pictures are rendered behind the scenes, too, so that's something you can try to clean up if you like. Because so much of the page is hidden in spoiler tags, you might not realize how much is going on behind the scenes while you wait for everything to finish loading. To be honest, I wouldn't spend much time cleaning up the other redundant formatting unless you really want to; pretty much all of your problems are being caused by all those pictures and YouTube videos.

Also keep in mind that today of all days is probably not the best day to be testing loading times of anything on the Internet. All kinds of DNS problems still ongoing, affecting a huge number of sites.

And this recently discovered linux kernel problem that has been around for 9 years could easily cause a ruckus as well:

^ Although GTPlanet's infrastructure was not directly affected by today's attacks and we are not particularly vulnerable to the Linux kernel exploit that was revealed, it has indeed been a rough day for the Internet on a global scale, which could be slowing down your connection and exaggerating your problem.

Oh right, ok that explains the issue.

To be honest, i was worried there was some kind of scripting issue that may have been having an effect.

So i went through and made a copy draft page for our new series to see how that would work after i cleaqned it up.

However it still seemd slow to load up, and yes i do try to keep it clean with spoilers, however i will gradually reduce the amount of youtube links as well.

I really appreciate your help guys.

I just had a look at your pages, I did not notice a long wait period on either page. Maybe a 1 second difference between page 1 and 2. I had no prior history on either page.

Ok, i have deleted all the video links, and it is still much slower to load page 1 than page 2.

Do you suggest that the spoilers actually slow the page loading ?
or would the same amount of content load nuch faster without the spoilers ?
The spoiler tags shouldn't have any significant impact on the page loading time, unless they're hiding lots of "heavy" content like images and embedded videos.

I just ran some browser performance tests on those pages to get some objective data. The first page finished in 3.7 seconds, the second in 1.4 seconds, which is typical or even better than average than most pages here. That's the browser's technical metrics, though — the pages themselves become visible and usable for me even before that (less than one second). I even ran a simulation over a slow 3G connection (250kbps) and it made little difference.

Most of the problem reports I get nowadays are actually caused by browser plugins, which interfere with and modify GTPlanet's pages. What type of computer/browser are you using? It's worth temporarily disabling your plugins or trying another browser entirely to see if you experience the same thing.

Well that's great, I was worried that I was slowing the speed of your site down.

Many many thanks for all of your input and guidance, if it's just me then that's fine, although it was slow loading in 3 different computers in 3 different locations with 3 completely different networks, however they all run the same browser Firefox with same plugins etc.
I have been asking around and it does seem i am the only one who seems to load slow.

Thanks guys.
Steve
