My mom said I used to pick up discarded cigarette buds off the ground and put them in my mouth when I was younger. When I was three, she said I toolk my Opa's cigar, and took a puff. I smoked cigarettes when I was 7, as a dare from older kids, but I really don't remember inhaling, though. (Insert your own Clinton joke here.)

When I was a teenager, I would smoke an occasional cigarette, nothing major. But, I started to smoke more in college. I quit several years ago for good.

I stopped to smoke, both cigs and other illicit substances, when I found out my girlfriend had a serious drug problem. I felt it was a good way to show I was serious about helping her getting out of it, and so far it's working. It's helping her, and it's helping me. And I don't miss it one bit.

You have my support, if that means anything to you. I haven't touched any drugs, except alcohol, in years...even then, I keep my drinking to an acceptable level. Quitting drugs uis the easy part; quitting the lifestyle is much trickier, yet worth all the trouble.

It's really a matter of finding people that have also quit, or peple that have never wanted to do drugs in the first place. When you surround yourself with people who still do drugs/smoke/drink, it's much tougher to quit. It's likely the same for anyone who has a bad habit.

i started smoking when i was 8 and i am not 15 pretty bad i use to steal them from my mom and then, first year of highschool i started buying cigars off a kid who stole em for a buck, then i started with chewing tabacco or known in my school as "chew" or "spit". my older brother started to notice after school and when i went out on friday nights and saturdays i was smelling like cigarette smoke, alchohal and on ocasions mary jane, now i did drink and smoke but i will never ever ever smoke marijuana it ruins your life, but my brother sed if i quite smoking will you quite i sed yes and i have been smoke and drink free for 7 months. I advise anyone reading this do not drink or smoke. i was at a bush party once, it got busted i started running and i gashed open my leg and luckly my freinds parents at the time didnt care , i was staying at there house for the night n the cops took us there and they didnt say anything to my parents. i am smoke and alcohal free and feel great.

Never have – my asthma gives me enough grief from being around second-hand smoke. Last week while at the local track I saw a guy smoking before he ran, which I thought was kinda odd.

I suspect one kid in my History class to be a heavy smoker, because I always smell smoke when I've within 10 feet of him… why bring bad odor upon yourself? (Not to mention bad health, of course. I've had several relatives who died due to smoking.)

Yeah, I thought it odd when I was smoking and on the swim team. What the hell was I thinking?
Doing something that robs you of your lung capacity while participating in a sport that requires GREAT lung capacity. Not like you can breathe whenever you want while swimming, especially when your head is below water. :dunce: Man I can be such a moron. :guilty:

I started smoking when i started drinking and that was when i was 14. I had my first cig at age 12, but that was it. I still smoke to this day and dont mind.

Whats the difference between the social smoker and the heavy smoker? I understand the frequency, but how can some people smoke whenever the feel like it and can say no pretty easily, and the other person who can't go a few hours without a puff?

I've personally been smoke free and it never really appealed to me. I've never done other drugs either, but it seems that if I'm going to inhale and damage my lungs, than I'd rather take something that has more of an effect than nicotine (in some cases).

Reminds me of the Family Guy where Brian is in the dog competition, and he pauses to have a smoke while running the course.

I dont know, but I think it's a question of wheather you inhale the smoke or just kinda let it sit in your mouth. I would guess that your social smoker is not inhaling, and isn't getting the "kick" (and addiction) that that will give you.

Willpower  I go without a cig for ages, because when you eventually do have one, its great. If you chain smoke, you lose the enjoyment. Its the same as eating when you are hungry and not just when food is available!

I'm a social smoker, but believe me, I suck those little white sticks right down :) I have no doubt I am addicted, I just don't smoke many.
A while ago as students we were looking into the effects of nicotine on the body. Nicotine gets into the bloodstream fast. Seven seconds, and your blood can only absorb a certain amount. After the first two drags of a cig, you have reached your threshold and basically smoking the rest is just for comfort!
Smoking is psychologically addictive as well as physically, that means most heavy smokers are actually smoking out of habit rather than their need for nicotine. Their nicotine level may be at a maximum but they still feel the need to smoke because they feel more comfortable with one in their hand...especially over a beer (guilty myself :) )

I started at 16 after leaving school. But now I've jumped on the anti smoking bandwagon and have been clean since Sunday. It's not as hard to quit as people make out. I don't even use Nicorete or anything like that.

I smoked for a short amount of time at I think 13...it was a popularity thing. Didn't work, I hated it, I stopped. Then I experimented a couple of times with a couple more serious substances. Didn't like those either (except one, but it's expensive).

Now I'm smoke/drug free. Definately not alcohol free...a few beers a week at least. It used to be a few more beers a week, but I work now.

I don't smoke, never did although I've had every opportunity to do so from a very early age. I just always thought it was disgusting.

Although I don't do drugs myself, and I doubt I ever will, I almost feel compelled to point out that the 'healthiest' way to consume Mary J. Blige is to make tea from it and drink that. This is the way the medicinal form of it is preferably consumed. Nicotine is a lot more addictive than MJ, and it's a bad idea to combine the two. MJ is a good alternative to getting drunk, in my opinion, and I actually think better, because many drunk people tend to become complete a-holes (both male and female), but the only a-hole stoner I ever met was also drunk.

My personal opinion on any drug is that they are artificial fun enhancers which are only temporary because fun is a relative thing. Enhancing it artificially degrades all your other 'fun factors' and that defeats the purpose, making the enhancement short term.

Smoking is a disgusting habit - not only because of the many ways it is bad for you (the list is nearly endless) but also because in the ways it is bad for others. We all know about second hand smoking by now, but does anyone realise you increase the chance your pet gets cancer also? Pets that clean their own firs, like cats and rabbits, lick up all the tar and ashes that gets on their fir from the cigarettes you smoke, and they suffer the consequences. Also, when people complain about having trouble not smoking when drinking, that is because alcohol increases the capacity of your cells to admit nicotine into them sevenfold!

All hail to Ireland, which is the first country to ban smoking from all pubs.

Awww poor cats and rabbits !!! jk

I smoke and it stinks - me and the g/f have stopped a couple of times but started again. I know its crap and will kill me if I dont stop but its just the fact you are doing something or that you have to do something soon that makes me smoke.

Smoke free and proud of it.

I've been offered them before, but having to spend years with Dad smoking in the car, I was quick to turn them down. Disgusting **** it is.

Post edited because of the morons that twist your words around and make things into bigger things than what they are. Thanks for ruining my life. Really.

I bet all the smokers here would like to have had your expericence of smoking so you now dont smoke - thats the funny thing, nearly every smoker wants to stop !!

Yep. Most of my friends do. It's only the people that try to fit in too much that "like" it. But really they don't. Try hards.

BigJamesGTI
I dont even think that smokers actually "like" smoking its just like breathing - you have to do it and thats it
It's one of those things that would've started out either as a Fitting In thing or Something to Do thing. Then it became a habit. Luckily, I didn't get the addiction.

That's the case with everybody once they're addicted. The only time I enjoy a cigarette now is when I'm holding a beer in the other hand. It's funny what they do to you though. For a long time after I started, I could smoke whenever I wanted, not smoke whenever I wanted, and enjoy it every time. I would get a humungous buzz every time I had one. Addiction just sneaks up on you though, I remember one day when I smoked and just didn't get any buzz at all, and from then on, I've been hopelessly addicted.

I stopped smoking 3 weeks ago... I smoked for 8 years - maybe more - and I was smoking a pack per day.

I loved it.

Today, I still feel the need for a cigarette. Right now, I can't say that my quitting will be sucessfull and I can't say that I'll never smoke again.

Hold out man. If you have children or something, think of them. I told my Mother to quit one day, and she knew I was serious, so she did. She went cold turkey, and everytime she felt like a cigarette, she thought of me (she never knew I smoked).

She's been off 'em now for near the same time I have: 3 years and a bit.

No. There's isn't any incentive of that kind.

To make things worst, I got rid of the last demanding girlfriend... 💡 Damn!

i do have a cigar with my mates every now and then to celebrate something
I must say, if they were affordable, I would smoke Cigars. I have smoked 1 Cuban before, and I loved it. I've smoked a Peurto Rican, a Cuban and a Russian (not sure, but I think it was). I love cigars.

DiabolicalMask -- Adopt a child. Either that or picture every cigarette as a penis.
