Well I am. It's dumping up here in Vail, CO right now. It's actually the worst I've seen up here in quite some time as far as the roads are concerned. It's the really wet, heavy snow that makes driving a bung puckering experience.
I was leaving work about midnight and on my way home. I travel a bit on the frontage road before I get on I-70. I'm taking it casually cus I'm pretty confident in the snow, but once my cars ass end stared sliding out on me while just traveling in a straight line, I knew I was in for a rough ride home.
I get to the interstate and merge into some other traffic that is moving at an absolute snails pace (rightfully so.). I slowly make my way around 2 cars and am feeling confident. Until I see not 1, not 2, but 7 different wrecks in the 2 mile journey through Dowd Junction (a section of Interstate that is renowned for it's 50+ car pile ups in snowy weather.) I now start to get a bit nervous as the roads are getting even worse. But I know I'm coming up on a nice flat straight section.
There is one final hill. Usually the hills are no problem if I carry some speed through them, but there is a line of cars backed up while going up the hill. Top speed is 15mph. This is where things get pretty sketchy as the IS3 hates slow speed hills with the heavy snow. The car is fishtailing wildly and it's taking everything I got to keep her on the road. Only if these damn people in front of me would pick up the pace a bit.
The guy in front of me (about 2 or 3 car lengths) is in a newer model VW Jetta. He's front wheel drive so he should be doing well, and he is, until he just all of a sudden spins off the road right in front of me! Now I'm sh***in bricks at this point. Is he gonna hit me? I likened the situation to the in-car view at a NASCAR event where someone is spinning out of control right in front of the camera and the driver has to pick one way to go and hope it's the right move to avoid a collision. Well I chose correct. I veered a tad to the left, but soon as I do, his car slides left and then immedately off to the right. Phew!!!
I finally pull into Avon and have only 1 hill left to concqure. But this one that goes into my driveway involves a really slow U turn. Well, I didn't make it. Nor did I make it up my drive the next 4 times. Finally I get a good enough head start and hit it from the other direction so I can come up the drive fairly straight. I'm getting to the top where the road goes a bit off camber which makes the rear end of the car slide out, sliding out toward a retaining wall. I slam the gas, the smell of burning rubber permiates the cabin, and I make it to the top with only inches to spare between the rear of the car and the wall. I park haphazardly into a parking spot only to wonder if I will get out in the morning.
I'm sick of seeing this crap. Especially after the 3 weeks of 60+ degree weather. Let it be summer puhleeeeeeeees.
I definately don't plan on spending another winter out here, especially when the winters here last 6 to 7 months.
Here endith the rant. Thanks for listening.
