So, are any of you American TV watchers dreading the writer's strike?

: shrug : you say it like it's a bad thing. I enjoyed the golden globes this year even though I didn't watch them. xD

Why are there all these new shows popping up then? I was under the impression...

Writer's strike = no new shows or current shows with new episodes period

Any form of reality TV shows do not need writers. That is why they are cheap to begin with. AMerican Gladiators is using Hulk Hogan as a host because he can ad-lib.


Then actual produced shows still have some episodes because when the threat of a strike was looming they all pulled huge shifts to write as much as possible. And shows like Lost that are spring only had shows being written but no production being done in the fall. So when production began they had a good number of scripts ready to go.
 
Yeah, I wasn't talking about reality because I already knew that, but there are new shows (can't think of them) like Head Case on Showtime? and they aren't excluded from this strike since Dexter isn't and they are on Showtime.

A few shows are made far in advance, some companies have signed individual deals during the strike (David Letterman), and then there are scab writers who are usually now the show producers, writers trying to get a break, or writers that disagree with the strike and use a fake name in the credits.

All kinds of things. But the strike as whole is still going on.

It is art and they don't want their art getting screwed up by scabs. I've already heard day-time soap writers crying about how their characters have been completely ruined by scabs.

That and when they are still under contract and the producer says, "we are having an all nighter to get some future scripts out.......it's mandatory by the way," they don't get much choice. You also have to realize that in case like Lost the writers are also producers and directors, so while they quit writing to support the strike having nothing go out affects them in more ways than just their writing salary. They are protecting their show/job. They don't want to come back from the strike to find the show they worked on got canceled because it had no season.


What will see a long-term affect is the movie industry. Everything that wasn't past needing mid-shooting rewrites has been put on hold. This time next year we will be seeing nothing but low-budget crap while the bigger movies are trying to finish up post-production.

Really... please... WTF cares!? I mean they do the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again anyway... Geez. Besides, completely ruined by scabs? they'll just come up with some unoriginal way to "correct it".

:cough: As for me watching soaps... one summer when I was too young to drive me and my sis were stuck home and all she did was watch soaps... We weren't privileged with a second tv or cable either. :mad:

Yeah, the one interview I saw talked about how it was going to take months to get a relationship back to the piviotal moment she had set up. :rolleyes:

I had a babysitter that would have me sit facing away from the TV so she could watch soaps while I played with my Hot Wheels.
 
Just a heads up, this thing, as of today, is over.
 
Well it's about time. It's weird having nothing to get excited about on tv anymore, the only things I've been watching are Simpsons and Seinfeld reruns. I'm ready for more of The Office, 24, and Scrubs.
 
I haven't really been watching TV lately. The TV in my room hasn't even been on since I started college. The only TV I watch now is Jeopardy during dinner.

Same here. Spontaneously I've maybe watched TV twice since I got my iMac.
 
I'd think that they would finish it, being the last season and all, it'd be a huge disappointment if they didn't.

They said they would release the final episodes on DVD if the strike went through the spring, but we're not there yet.
 
I was just reading about it and I guess they've completely written 11 of the 18 episodes for the final season as of now.

Also, new episodes will start back up in April.
