He looked mighty impressive in the Australian qualifying, and was unlucky not to get a podium or 4th place due to the gearbox failure, rosberg could have his chance too because i reckon the Mercedes is just as good as the red bull to be honest.

If there is attrition at the front, then yes.

Otherwise I think 2nds and 3rds are more his achievables this year.

He might but I'd say Rosberg has more of chance.

The Mercedes looks to be a good car but it also seems to work tyres hard as well.

In a race with cold temperatures, Canada maybe?, That could be a good thing. In warm temperatures it may be a bad thing.

I still can't see it, unless there is an accident/accidents involving the front runners.

Jah, don't think the Mercedes is playing in Redbull and Mclaren territory. Thankfully though, they only need 2 drivers to drop out vs 4 drivers last year.

Win: It's possible, but Mercedes will have to work on tyre degradation and keep up in the development race.
Podium: Definitely.
Pole Position: Definitely.

Only if his car is has the pace of McLaren and RBR with few or no mechanical failures then yes he can win a race this year.

I'm going to hold you to this. :D

Mercedes need to work on the tyre wear first. They aren't going to win anything if their pace keeps dropping off. Podiums are definitely possible, race wins will take a high attrition or some extreme weather.

If Mercedes can sort out the tyre wear problem, sure why not, otherwise no, same story as last year, he'll be on podium maybe once or twice but that's it.

Good! :) I have very high hopes of Mercedes this year after seeing their pace in Practice and Qualfying in Melbourne.

It was just one event.

Certainly, they look a much stronger package than last year but it's apparant that they have tyre wear problems. If they can't nail that, they'll fade away like last year.

But overall they do look much better than the last two years, so who knows... we'll find out over the next 19 races.

well even last year Mercedes was pretty fast in qualification, beside I still believe that those qualification didnt show the true pace of the Red Bull, I bet they'll be able to pass both mercedes and Renault next quali. So Mercedes would be back at there place again since Ferrari's arent that good yet. Also they have tyre wear problem with full fuel loads from what I read, which is the same problem as last year basicaly. 1 more pit stop per race is just not possible if you're aiming for a podium, unless it rains.

No to race wins and no to podiums. The McLarens and Red Bulls have the top 4 slots sown up. Anyone else is going to need 2 of those to have problems to snatch a podium. It looks like Alonso will be ahead of him too. Not Ferrari though, just Alonso.

The Mercedes seems to be OK over 1 lap, but just falls apart over a race distance.

Yes, he will.

His driving is not up to par with his old self, which could possibly be because that driving style doesn't suit the current tires, but he has the car to do it considering the Aussie GP and how the team did at the pre-season (taking into account fuel and compound used).

Lets see how they deal with tire degradation though, which seems to be the team's major problem right now.

It's only been one race, and yet people are ready to write off Mercedes as a tough customer for race wins.

Still got another 18 rounds right?

dhandes

Listen to this man. He predicted Maldonado's crash on Sunday, plus a couple of other things.

I think he will. He just needs a bit of luck.

I still believe that if any mercedes will win it will be Rosberg. He's faster than the current Schumacher unless he does a mistake.

Without a doubt he can. This man has a sparkle back in his eyes and a care for his car because he knows he can deliver. BUT Merc need to fix that tire deg. And Michael needs to find a bit more pace (0.1s or 0.2s) in Qualifying, which he can do. This is a legend who has underperformed the past two seasons (save for Spa and Canada last year) and knows this year he can do better. And you can see he wants to. I predict a podium (3rd) for him next race, and we'll see from there. I may just say China could be Schumachers 92nd win, but the next race will let me analyse the Merc more. I can that if that Merc performs, Michael will win in China, Britain, Canada and Belgium. Rosberg should also win a couple (German?). But McLaren are very strong...

In short: Yes he can, and if he believes that, he will.
