So, can Vettel win the championship in 2012?

Vettel will win this year if everything comes together. Its unclear if Red Bull are capable of winning this year but its undeniable that Vettel has the talent to win.

Of course he can. All it takes is making the car specifically suited for Vettel, since as Mr. Helmut Marko says HERE, Webber is not sensitive to the car's behaviour, he only needs four wheels.


I doubt this is a compliment to Mark, although it can also be read that way. But I'm sure it works as a perfect excuse to lead car development according to litle Seb's wishes ... :rolleyes:


EDIT - May I just add that apparently, Marko got it all wrong. Insensitive Webber, apparently, "felt" (and accordingly chose) the best solution, while Vettel didn't.

Marko is such an ass. One wonders how on earth or rather why on earth Red Bull let him put out statements, perhaps they genuinely don't care that everyone knows they seem to hate Mark Webber.

I'm actually amazed people don't refer to this more often really, there are quite a few reports from some media that he is pretty rude (I remember Ted Kravitz once referring to Marko talking about him as "the monkey") and there are now many, many quotes about his thoughts on Webber.

I think the worst was when he effectively spoke out of turn on Webber's contract/retirement. Mark hasn't really said anything about that other than that he wants to keep going at the moment. But Marko released a statement saying something like "Mark will retire this year.". I almost get the impression Webber keeps driving just to spite Marko! :lol:
 
I think he can but he's going to need some luck and a great race.

I like him, but I really don't want him to win this year. It's just boring for the sport even if your a fan. Mainly because we all know he's no schumacher, or senna. He's a fast driver but he's most likely not the fastest, and definitely not the best overtaker, nor is he above average on preserving tires.

I think Hamilton will probably win but I wouldn't mind seeing schumacher, or kobayashi winning it this year. They're both longshots though. Hamilton has looked very consistent. In the past it was his speed and great passing ability that won him races, now he's consistent and still has the speed. It's only a matter of time before he gets his first win. I think he'll take it home

I'm fairly happy that Mercedes GP are in the mix among the front-runners, it makes everything a bit more interesting, even if you support McLaren-Mercedes.
 
Yeah I'm happy for Mercedes GP too. That's two more cars that can be added into the battle at the front.

So do you think it's the mercedes engine? Is that what you meant? that's interesting, I hadn't thought about that. Are the engines resticted just by horsepower or torque as well? I wonder if the mercedes engine has a more beneficial torque curve or something.

I think Schumacher needs to stop having such bad luck if he's going to win. He also needs to get a little bit of his skill back because he rightfully should be destroying Rosberg but hasn't really. I hope he at least wins a GP this year honestly. As messed up as it is, I'd rather see him with the WDC than vettel this year :) Make it number 8 hahaha.
 
Of course he can. Alonso managed to win with an off-pace car, I see no reason why Vettel can't.
And besides there are still 18 races left, Red Bull are under a lot of pressure to bring in new packages over the course of the season to bring the car back up to the front.
Taking that into account and Vettels lightening pace (which has only been absent due to an under performing car, which has led to pressure and frustration) he will win a race before the season is through. Several if Red Bull get their act together.

I kinda figured that the folks who just started following F1 during the past couple years and jumped on the Vettel bandwagon would be more perplexed and fussy about him not already dominating the 2012 season, as if he was guaranteed to dominate forever just because he had a good run lately.

Can he win? Of course. Him and several other drivers look good for it as of early into this season. Heck, we almost had a Sauber on the top step of the podium. I don't expect Vettel to suddenly surge forward and dominate the second half of the season, but I don't see any reason to count him out for a win or two.

I also have a strong feeling that he could win this race. I think we all understand it very well in what RB and Vettel can do when they're in front. But the problem is, we've never seen this happening to RB and Vettel this year so this will be very interesting indeed.

Brave enough, I will say yes he can win tomorrow.
 
I don't think so, my thoughts are based on nothing but my gut feeling though. So I may be completely wrong.

Starting with tomorrow it's possible that he can win, it'd be pretty boring though. I want a McLaren driver to be winning. Either that or Nico Rosberg, it's about time he got a break.
 
Yes, he did. Disappointment fills within me, but he deserved it.
 
No chance. He just isn't good enough without a car that's clearly better than all the rest and obviously the team would need to sabotage the far superior Webber's car to ensure that Vettel could luck into another victory.

I dont think the car was third best TBH... they seemed to have made some technical breakthroughs (specially exaust wise) and their pace was only matched by the Lotus of Raikkonen (on race day)

And IMO thisd thread lost its purpose and can be locked :D

Anyway, I guess we can put this discussion aside. We knew Vettel can win today and indeed he did. Now the question is... Can Webber do the same?

The Red Bull was anything but third best this weekend. The track layout, with its high speed corners, and the high temperatures, favored the Red Bull. It looked like an even better package than the McLaren this time around.
