which i believe we have the right to do in the United Kingdom.

We're entering grey territory here....

But I can't, however much I try, see how it can be illegal for a person to make a backup of anything they've legally bought..

Example one : me and the EO has around 4000 books ranging from £ 10 to maybe £ 400... of those, we have no backup.. if the apartment burns.. See ya - Sucks to be you... Of course - we'll get money from the insurance company - It'll help, but it'll never be enough.. Some books are rare, sure you can get a later copy, but it's just not the same...

But - With games - You can take a copy (or should be able to) and keep in your off site safe.. Yet.. it's not a Possibility - and in some countries even against the law...

can someone tell me what's wrong with this picture ?.....

You'd be surprised at how cheap you can get the original version of the game for actually. I got mines for around 15 pounds, which is about the equivalent of $30, but was a low price cos it was the Japanese version. You can preorder the PAL release for 25 pounds, again around $51. I usually take great care of my games, but always like to make back-up copies incase i lose a game/scratch a game which is quite common for me. I usually take good care of my games, but tis other people in my family who always mess around with my collection, which is why it helps to have legal back-ups, whih i believe we have the right to do in the United Kingdom.

I totally agree with making back-up copies, if you own the game. Me and my friends get together all the time, and with about 10 people and tons of beer... well its bound to happen. Someone either doenst pay attention or there just too loaded, and woops either they scratch it or set it somewhere on the ground and its gets cracked. and dont give me this crap about you should be more careful or not drink.. HAHAHA, IT HAPPENS.

The problem comes from people buying these copies, not from you having them for yourself. No matter what people are going to try to pay as little as they can for the game Illeagal or not, thats just life. The solution needs to be some kind of registration code that has to be verified online or something like that.

When you get a game of the quality of Gran Turismo 4, I would pay any price to buy the game, even if it was twice the initial cost, cos u get what u pay for - absolute quality. I'm sure they'll be a way of copying your legally owned GT4 soon, cos there is no game out there which can't be backed up. Reminds me of when the PS2 came out and they were saying, "The PS2 is impossible to chip" nothing is impossible and neither will the PS3 when it comes out.

And here to the right, ladies and gentlemen, is your garden variety IRC warez channel goon.

Why would anyone need to BACK-UP a game, Nothing but PIRACY!! THANKS FOR MAKING THE PRICES GO UP ON GAMES LOSERS!!! Nobody needs a backup, if you scratch disks that often, stop playing your game in the quarry! The rest of the world knows what you're doing.

For a man whose sig states "speak only from what you truly know", you are making a surprising number of serious and utterly unfounded accusations.

If you were to photocopy a few prized passages from your book - should you be arrested?

You've bought the right to read that book. Don't fall into the trap the music companies are peddling - you bought your favourite band's album, but now you must pay again to listen on CD. Now minidisc - pay again! Now Blu-ray - PAY US MORE. Finally MP3 - pay us.....but we'll only let you listen to it on one computer....

Fair use is a tricky issue, but it's fundamental to social and civil development. We shouldn't let greed wash it away

(BTW, no I don't agree with, nor defend, piracy!)

But add the price up, song by song, and it's almost exactly the same price as a CD of the album, and there's no actual CD...

That ight be the case in the US but not in the UK. iTunes sells songs for 0.99 cents each. That equals 0.52p here in the UK. Mutilpy 0.52p by 15 songs = £7.80. A brand new album in the UK normally costs about £14 each, and they rarely have 15 songs on them, more like 10.

...How do you break a game down into each little unit like that? Or a movie? Would you like to pay 1 pound for each license test, and each individual race series? How about 1 pound for each 10 minutes of your favorite movie?...

Not sure where you go this idea from??? I'm not suggesting breaking films or games up into parts, and you only pay as you play/view. However I do know that Stephen King did sell a eBook on his website, and you brought a chapter at a time. Nice idea, which didn't work as well as he might have hoped.

...Developing games takes an insane amount of time and money. How much do you think it has cost PD to have a small army of people working on GT4 full time for the last 3 years?

It will have cost them £millions easily. If you think of all the work involved in logging car data, visting tracks, car research and license fees etc.

It wouldn't surprise me if PD had set alot of ground work in place for GT5. All their car and track data will just get used again. It's common sense if nothing else.

However my argument is not with the developers (unless they publish their games as well, like EA) as they put all the work in. It's the publishers and retail shops that add the extra price on top. I doubt the developers have any control over how much the game is sold for. That's one reason why I buy all my games/CD's/DVD's online. These high street shops need to learn that they can't control the prices of these products anymore.

Cheers, Jamie

I am from Brazil and bought Japanese version.
A week salary for me (with import taxes and everything), but it is my way to say thanks to KY.

I´ll buy US version too.

But, that would be nice to run the game from HD and use the original media just to make a quick check to see its "originality".

I'm stuck with All the Operation Flashpoint Addons, but the original game won't load b/c the cd is to scratched because of this - and Those stupid CD keys.
