So, the engine noises, are they good, or are they still crap like before?

So, one of the things we all knew that needed to be improved in the future for Gran Turismo is the noise the engine makes. So I ask this, has it improved, or is it the same turbo charged hairdryer crap that Polyphony Digital are so used to creating?

its alot better, but always can be improved... i guess since its only PROLOGUE they can always improve it when GT5 comes out,, if not ppl will complain and patches will come forth :)

but noise is alot better.. i dont have 5.1 surround system. and my settings are default.. (not large theater in the options in GT5P) but you can hear the engines growl when need to and it does sound pretty darn great and real. each car is really distinctive so you can recognize cars by the sounds... so its a lot improved

and tire noises are a lot better. and a lot less of them when you race, and now they have a deeper pitch to them. sounds just awesome :)

once i get a 5.1 i wonder how much will change

Having Heard an F430 take off from the lights at speed, I would say the sound is bang on, however the volume just isn't there. In real life its deafening but in game it's hard to hear over the wind/road noise even when outside the cockpit. I think a bit of tweaking is in order, less ambient sounds and more engine note, I'll fiddle around with the options sometime...

The actual sounds are dead on though.

Is it just me or did Forza 2 have really great engine sounds?

Forza 2 does have amazing car sounds, I think the difference here though is that PD concentrates (or for whatever reason) focuses more on the engine than the exhaust note. Its really the exhaust that is lacking in the GT series. You definitely get the whine from the engine revs but we are really missing that loud bark from the exhaust on a lot of cars.

have 5.1 surround and can be shoet and clear about it:fantastic!!!!..........when you drive the f430 for example, the engine noise really comes from the back where the engine is.....and about volome:check if neighbours are out and put it wide open!!!!wow,wow,wow....!

I think a lot of the cars have had a major improvement. But as someone just said, the volume on them needs to be turned up.

The sound are better, but far from good. In real life, with turbo engines for instance, there is a big difference in the exhaust note revving the engine compared to an engine on full boost. There is also a big difference between a warm and a cold exhaust. A warm exhaust (glowing red) has a tendency to ignite unburned fuel, resulting in puffs og flames and\or bangs.
The airintake also varies rather much in sound depending on the amount of work you are telling your engine to do.
And the vtec-sound barely noticeable. In real life, the vtec engine sound cool up to 5-6000 rpm and sounds amazing the rest of the way.
The engine\exhaust-sound in the game just isn't raising the hair in my neck, so I think it's just alright

Yes the engine sounds are hands down better than they were in GT3 and GT4. But it's like the sounds and pitches are there for each car, but it is somewhat lacking that extra "umph", if you kinda know what i'm saying.

Now I use a 5.1 surround sound system, but i haven't actually messed with any of the "theater sounds" options in the menus. Does anyone know which of the 3 options would be best for an in house 5.1 system? Whatever the default setting is, that is what i've been using, but that actually might be "living" option, or whatever it is. So in other words, i could be missing out a little bit mainly because i don't know what PD defines as "small theater system" and "large theater system."

what i did is just try all options....eventually after i tried all settings,i put the option on large theater and changed the settings on my 5.1 amplifier so the "echo" effect is as minimal as poss......like i wrote here before this reaction ,i think i have the best poss settings and am enjoing the new sound like never before!!!!!!!!!!.....so,just try all options and figure out what is best for your room/house/situation.....good luck and enjoy!

Oh ok, sounds good, yeah I just thought I'd ask to gather some opinions since i haven't had a chance to really mess with the settings yet. But, that is what i'm going to do right now. Thanks for the input!

Some YouTube clips I made and have posted elsewhere...

Mustang GT

Corvette Z06

BMW M3

The engines are much throatier than GT4, and are very distinct between different car makes, but the tires are still way too loud and tend to overtake the engine noise. Bumper cam gives the best engine audio, but the "airflow" sound kicks in too much at medium/high speed. My observations and clips are based on default settings for audio, so I may need to fiddle a bit with those and report back.

I think the main reason that GT has puny sounds is possibly the way they record the engine and exhaust sounds. Turn 10 strapped cars to a dyno and used a lot of mics all around the front and rear of the car to record the engine and exhaust under a load. PD seems to still just record the engine( not much exahust) in neutral. That's understandable since there are a huge amount of cars. Not sure if Turn 10 dynoed every car, but there are plenty of exhaust sounds, the Cobra R and Mustang GT sound like real life, especially with the exhaust upgrades. The Mustang in GT is okay, but not a good as I hoped, I'll get over it, its too damned beautiful not to.

the sounds are pretty bad IMO (at least compared to forza and some others). They are better than past GT series games though. Im using a Samsung 5.1 and HD Projector

sounds pretty good, all the cars. 'cept they still have really annoying tire sounds :( please change that pd lol

They're a great improvement from the previous GT titles, however they could be better. One problem that i always had with car sounds in all GT games, is that the engine note rev counter reading is always about 2000rpm ahead - meaning- at 4000rpm it sounds like the real cars sound at 2000rpm and at 6000rpm it actually sounds like 4000rpm.
I hope it improves for the full version.

they're still not up to par with basically any other racing game on the market, as every one has said they lack that OOMPH, most likely because of PD recording them in neutral and not under load, my car sounds the same way if i just rev it, but in say 2nd gear if i really get on it it's much deeper, louder, etc. something PD really needs to consider

ALL of the cars in GT5 Prologue have stock exhaust. I find it quite realistic compared to NFS's hollywood sfx or Forza's boosted volume. PD are trying to simulate reality. Not every stock car will sound like your average rice car with cannons on the road.

Its very difficult to simulate the vibrations of real life. There are many layers of sounds inside the engine bay/around the car when you floor the throttle. The recordings at the moment are very clean. Once they start adding more layers, I'm sure it will start to sound much better.

My hope is that PD gather more recordings of exhaust mods of certain cars, and open exhaust (no mufflers). You can't fake/simulate these sounds.

I forgive them for faking it in the past because of technical limitations, but there are no more excuses.
Forza has the right idea by recording the cars with engine load. I hope PD go this way in the future.

Exactly what I have been saying, agreed.

Indeed.

Yes i have to say the engine sounds in GT5P are quite good. Much better and realistic than GT3 or 4. The tyre noise still needs work though.

I agree, I hope they have had enough time to get the PS3 figured out. I really hope they change their recording ways to more like Turn 10. Thier stock vehicles sound very realistic, and the upgraded exhaust is also very realistic, the Mustang GT with Flowmasters sounds as the same as a real life GT with the flos on it.

Me on track, I think there is more ooomph from my bad phone-mic than on GT5p.
I want more of the sounds we get when driving on track. Just listen to the exhaust, it really changes a lot through the rev-range.
I don't think PD is that bad on tiresqueal though.
If you listen closely, you can also hear the turbo whine.

I also had my car on the dyno, but I recorded that on another phone, so the sound is a bit different.

Difference of incar noise(music..:sly:) and outside noise.

Fully agree, specially regarding vtec. I would say the type-R sounds better than it did on gt4, but gt5p still doesnt capture the distinct switch to vtec at 5-6000rpm, which is a shame really!

And regarding turbo motors, I think in the full version it would be cool if you could choose your blow off valve sound (if not brand). And a bit of external wastegate noise wouldnt hurt either!! Imagine a S14 swinging sideways round a corner, wastegate screaming and bouncing of the rev limit, all with those amazing graphics!! :D

I don't think any sim really captures the vtec switchover point that you hear in Honda's vehicles. How does forza 2's ITR sound compared to the ITR in GT5:P, anyone know? I think the GT5 version sounds very realistic. Maybe we should start a petition for Polyphony Digital to use improved sound capuring technologies like Turn 10 does (dyno recording).

Yep Im with you on that one, a well defined switch over would be awesome :D

Had a ball of a time thrashing my new Evo 9 on gt5p(chasing a M3) lastnite, that I can say DEFINITELY sounds the same as the real deal, as Ive been lucky enough to give one of those fine cars absolute death :trouble:
No blow off valve noises mind you...

I think the vtec switchover point is done well. You can here a change in the sound especially on nordwand in the tunnel. The Sound gets sharper, like in a really type r. I'll record a short video of my type r and compare it with gt5p :-).

Well I had a 2002 Civic Type-R and the first switch at 5000rpm is extremely noticeable compared to that of gt5p imo. The 2nd switch at 7000rpm-ish is fairly audible though
