SOCOM : Confrontation

The scope systems in SOCOM are different than COD4. In COD, you press L1 to raise your weapon and aim or you can fire from the hip. Because SOCOM is third-person, you automatically raise your weapon while in battle and if you press the zoom in button you get a close target reticle, if you have a scope, it goes into the scoped view.

So sure you can have a Semi-Automatic M14 but the aiming is a bit different compared to COD. I like the way SOCOM does it more, but other people like the COD system.

Not really referring to the aiming system. In COD4 there were different attachments and as far as optics there are the RDS (Red Dot Sight) and the ACOG scope. The ACOG is basically a scope like it says and the RDS are optics that just have a red dot for better aiming. The RDS is sort of what I was hoping for... something like it.

I know all about the scopes in COD4. there is a better selection for scopes in SOCOM, ACOG, RDS, and other optics with different distances and sights. But it still feels different when using scopes in SOCOM opposed to COD. And who knows, if you end up getting it, you may want to try the other weapons and not limit yourself to just the M14, which you use for COD.

There's more choices for attachments for the guns in socom. For the assault rifles there's a red dot, acog, low zoom scope, medium zoom scope, and a high zoom. I might be a scope or 2 off. The sub machine guns, sniper rifles and machine guns all have different options.

I notice that you keep trying to compare socom to cod4. It's a really hard comparison to make. Socom is more of a tactical game. There's alot more setting and waiting or camping as most call it. You have to use strategy in socom if you want to win. Most of the things you do in cod4 will get you killed in socom. If your in love with the call of duty games and have never played socom, you will probably be disappointed with the slowed down aspects of the game. In the older socoms, respawn games didn't count toward your stats. You had to play each round with one life in order to have your kills and deaths recorded. I loved that part of socom. The people who just ran around looking for kills didn't last long, then you could come out from the bush you had been waiting in, along everyones favorite trail, grab the bomb, and blow up the enemy's base. Socom actually forces you to work as a team and use some strategy if you want to succeed in your mission.
If getting 20 kills in a match is your favorite thing to do. Socom is probably not for you, but if your looking for a more realistic shooter, than socom will probably win you over.

Exactly, the two are not really comparable gameplay wise, as I said earlier in this thread, you need to be careful what you do in SOCOM, if you try to run & gun, you will get put in your place.

Also what some people don't realize is that SOCOM is such a team game, you really need a headset and communicate with your team in order to succeed. Thats why in SOCOM you don't hear babies crying, rap music blasting, or constant flaming. Without a headset you are really limited and although you can hear your team talking, you can't talk to them for help.

SOCOM = tactical/strategical team based battles

COD4 = more arcady, get as many kills as humanly possible while running around with like a crazy person

Although I like both, SOCOM has been my favourite since S1.

Socom I see as being like a 3rd party version of RSV2. That's why I like it. I'm actually expecting it to be even more tactical than RSV2.

I'm not comparing, i'm just wondering if they have similar sights and they seem to and then some. No, I don't find myself playing this game anytime soon. I don't have $400 to spend right now and then another $60. I also don't limit myself to only the M14. In close range situations I usually use either an MP5 or M249. In long range I use the M14 mostly but sometimes i'll break away and use a sniper rifle (R700)

I wanna play this game badly, beta, but I wanna get my hands on FULL version!!.. I going to wait..

Along with the red dot sight, low, medium, and high scopes, there is a 12x scope for sniper rifles and a reflex sight for assault rifles.

Based on my experience so far, I'm going to be playing this game for a long time.

This game is soooo Tempting!
I still ganna wait for FULL release with the Hedstet mic

I was finally able to try MGS4 online to try and curb my craving for this game... if it's anything like MGS4 it will be an instant BUY!

Software update 1.10 has been installed for the SOCOM beta, I don't believe there are many visual additions or anything that you can see, but the load times have been improved alot. The force start has been set up for games that are in the lobby so no longer are we waiting 10 minutes for people to Green Up. Also when joining into a game already in progress, the load times have been improved alot.

Thank god for that!

Ya, its a lot better getting into games, quickly, sitting in a game lobby can still go on for a while but if you try to join into a game already playing that seems to be a bit better, based on the games I've played today.

Been playing the beta since saturday and OMG...

this game is absolutely amazing!

Its really addictive... first day I played 4hours straight... 2nd day 3hours and so on lol...

What I love about socom is that you can't really run and gun. You have to be smart about what you do... and communication is KEY when winning a battle.

so far my fav weapons are the M4 with laser + Reflex scope and the Desert Eagle + laser.

Only thing about the laser is that if your moving around with it and hiding people can see the laser being moved so it screws you up at the same time...

I had a really good few matches last night after downlaoding the new patch.

Game entry is much quicker and easier now and the matches don't seem to lag much at all (but it does still happen when someone joins or leaves a match).

I just love the more measured game play, needing more thought and planning than most FPS's. I honestly had more voice chat that involved the match and tactics in two hours last night than you would find in two months of COD4.

The team I was on used comms to ID the location of a sniper and to then put in place a distraction to allow someone to get behind the sniper and take them out.

Weapon setup (with multiple rails for add-ons) and como colours adds a lot of good solid customisation as well.

Based on this beta/demo alone I'm going to be getting the full game.

what is your psn account?

ill add you so we can have some matches!

My PSN account is ScaffUK, feel free to add me.

👍

Is there a way to play solo, just to get a feel for the controls?

Unfortunatly no, so regular death is the order of the day for the first few matches (mainly as the aim button from COD4 (L1) is switch weapons in SOCOM), it doesn't however take long to get used to it at all.

One thing that has not been mentioned, but does work well, are the Six-Axis controls. Used for looking around corners (by tilting the controler in the direction you want to look) it actually works very well and feels 'right'.

Hmm, after reading this I'm wishing I had a code, as I loved SOCOM 3 :P I'll probably buy this after it comes out, how many players can get into an online match together? (I'm thinking if the map is large, it will have at least 32, won't it?)

Chris.

32 is the maximum, but I find that 8 x 8 gives a really nice balance on most of the maps and get the gameplay to be nice and slow (i.e. - no run and gun).

No idea about the Qore beta codes.

The sixaxis works really well for tilting and if you tilt the controller forward while in crouch, your character will duck even lower towards the ground to take cover from bullets. I like the way the lean works with the sixaxis but I would rather have a button, L or R on the D-pad is what it should be.

Hey crazyjoe, do you know if they have fixed the friends invites yet?
I'll be on tonight around 9:00 eastern if you want to try to get in a game together again.
For some reason my mic wouldn't work the other day when we finally got in a game.

Had some sweet matches last night. One match I had set myself lying perfectly with my M87 and picked off terrorists as they were coming down the stairs of their spawn.

The last few matches I've had since the update I have done pretty well, I like the HK36 for Seals and 552 for Terrorists.

Does anyone know why they changed Terrorists to Mercenaries in this one? Seems like a hassle saying Mercenaries.

IIRC, they did that in "SOCOM: Combined Assault" (Expansion to SOCOM 3 that made it easier to kill everyone :P) I loved to annoy the 90% of people who played CA by saying "The Terrorists are coming through the side!" and they'd get shot trying to figure out what I meant by Terrorists :P (Probably something to do with the current War the US is in)

BTW, I tried playing SOCOM 3 the other day and I couldn't get into a room without Hacks going on some way or another.

From,
Chris.
