SOCOM : Confrontation

Well took a while but I found the thread! with a mater of days till release and a new patch for Euroope which seems to have solved most of the issues SOCOM is creeping in under the radar. Quite a few GTP guys have this game alrady, those in the states have had it since october and a few have importet it from over the pond.
Today I watched KZ2 online desend into a Halo nightmare so until flashpoint 2 hits at the end of the year I'm seriously looking at SOCOM to give me a strategic shooter, if it don't I'm off back to GRAW 2 and BF2:BC LOL Ok so how strategic is SOCOM? I've read various reviews from the sublime to the rediclious and a search of the official forums seems to point at patches 1.3 and 1.41 having in conjunction with server overhauls prety much made a proper job of the game eventualy.
Can some of the guys who have SOCOM please give us/me some info on the way matches are generaly played and how it feels, ie weapon handeling, sound, movement. I'm hopeing with SOCOMS initial bad press and KZ2 currently being the golden boy that the kids will pass this one up and leave it for the more diserning (older) playersthus keeping things more celibral and less run and gun hyperactivity! One main reason I'm looking at this is the NO RESPAWN matches which surely must lead to more cautious gameplay? this is the majority of COD4 game mode that I play (hardcore) for this very reason, again how dose this pan out?
You may have seen my last KZ2 post, thus my renewed enthusiasim for SOCOM which I've been sitting on the edge of my seat fo a long time having just missed out on the PS2 debute.

Socom can't even really be compared to any other shooters. It is the only one that needs to be played tactical to win. If you are playing against even mediocre opponents who are using team work, they will destroy you without a game plan.
All of the ranked games are non respawn, with many different game modes.
1. Elimination (pretty much team death match)

2. extraction (seal team must grab hostages from the other team. Then they must take them to the extraction point. If either team kills the hostages, that team will lose)

3. escort (seals must escort 3 V.I.P.s to an extraction zone, without the other team
killing the V.I.P.s In this mode the terrorists can kill the V.I.P.s and still win)

4. demolition (a bomb is in the middle of the map, and each team must grab the bomb, and plant it at the other teams base)

5. breach (the seal team must grab a bomb, and blow up entrance points into the other teams base, then they must plant the bomb.)

6. control points(self explanatory)

I think that is all the game modes. Socom is a much slower paced game then the others you mentioned. If you take off by yourself, more then likely you will die very quickly. To win games communication is very important. It will get you much farther then your personal skill at the game.

As far as the sound goes, in my opinion, no other game compares. If you have surround sound, you will love it. The guns sound powerful and tight, and the explosions are exactly how they should be, loud and powerful.
It sounds to me like the game is actually in 7.1. You can really set and listen where the shots are coming from, and pinpoint your next move off of that. One of the things I love, is the lack of background noise, other then what is actually being done in the game. Their are not many other noises, that are not someone actually firing a gun, or a grenade. It makes for some intense moments, when you encounter an opponent.

When the game first came out, it was a joke. The game was far from finished. I couldn't believe they released it like they did. Now though, alot of the bugs are getting ironed out, and it is a very good tactical online shooter.

I hope with the european release, more GTP members get this game. I tried to start a clan earlier, but there were only 2 or 3 of us in it. Hopefully we can get a better one together now.

The game will take getting use to, so don't get discouraged at first. I have been playing cod5, and tried out socom again the other night. I was horrible, it took me a couple of days to get the hang of it again.

This is a game that you will either love, or hate. The people who love it will never look at shooters the same again.
The people that hate it, will go back to COD, and their running and gunning.

Add another one to the list, PLAY.com have posted my copy.

I ordered it in part for the better mic, but also as an antidote to KZ2, in which morons who charge choke-points head on are ruining the on-line side of things.

Played the open Beta for SOCOM and enjoyed the match's that I could get into, fingers crossed that the EU launch delay has allowed these to be sorted out.

I will try playing it tonight to see the improvements made. Haven't played it in a few months. I turned it on the other day, and downloaded the update, but it took a while and i didn't have time to play after. When i could get into a game the pace is more my preference. Even in the death-match with infinite re-spawn it's still not as hectic as say halo, or KZ2 current game play with everyone charging each other at certain meeting points. I just couldn't get too into Socom, because i never had anyone to work with. I play the infinite re-spawn as i'm not the greatest at it, and i don't like waiting forever to get back into the game. :ouch:

Something i just thought about, KZ2 has 32 players and can load the game quickly. Where as SOCOM takes forever in my mind as far as waiting for a game to start/load. Is it a programming thing, or the quality of the servers they are using?

After hearing of new patch for SOCOM, I gave it a go again. After doing 12 hours single play and almost 25 hours with online I always want to go back for both single play and multiplay.. With SOCOM, I got bored quickly but why?

I do not know why I stop playing the game. It is really fun. It's like Counter Strike for Sony, but it's most realistic shooter I have ever play. I only did a couple of matches a night ago and loved it again! Having to DIE and wait for another match, makes it more cautious.

Very fun game again! I really did not notice anything new with the patch since last time I play.

Hopefully I'll have some free time after school tonight and play all night! I hope I fall in love with this game again!

Well I got SOCOM today and had a few quick matches and two things stand out.

I still love the game, the issues from the beta have been fixed and its as tactical as ever.

...and....

Currently I suck in a big way, god its going to take while to get used to this again.

Still managed a few kills, which to be honest for the first time back on SOCOM after months away is good enough for me.

What you didn't get the 25 kills per match like a certain other game LOL I ended up working 15 hours today (cue violins) so I never managed to go grab a copy but I'll go grab one in the morning and I'll hit it mid afternoon after some more work (fade violins LOL)

OK got it...........yeah this is what tactical shooters are supose to be, completly smitten with it. Going to take a long time to get to grips with everything this game offers, that said I've had a fair few kills, and I've actual been in rooms with randoms and theres nothing but tactics beeing discused over the coms, absaloutly fantastic.

This looks interesting. I'm still fairly obsessed with CoD4 online at the moment, but to be honest i'm still not comfortable with the whole, as you guys put it, run and shoot style that everyone is eventually forced to follow suit. It just doesn't come naturally to me. So what if you get 25 kills in a game, if you get killed 28 times in the process you can't really be playing a 'warfare' sim can you?

I'm looking for a head-set anyway and Play.com have SOCOM and the headset for 30 quid.....

Is this worth the buy seriously? I have the first two on the PS2, and I was pretty much sold on the idea then. Is it still over the shoulder like in days of yore? if you guys give me the nod, I will buy it, I need a change of pace. 👍

Yes it's still third person, aka over the shoulder. you still run accross open ground, preferabley with a team mate covering you from the shadows, and you still stop at every corner to check for enemy. And the thing is, everyone dose this. You go into a match and if you die, your a spectator for the rest of the game, your teams a man down and your out of the action. quite simply the best way to keep online shooters "sane" LOL
I really wouldn't recomend this game though........what?.......the thing is if your a fan of COD4 and thats the type of game your looking for then you'll hate this! KZ2 fans Halo fanatics, COD players will all simply see this as junk.
On the other hand, if your into Rainbow six, or ghost recon then SOCOM is going to be for you, no doubt about it.
The game is slow paced, and intense, then when the shots start raining down you'll find you've stoped breathing for a while LOL Maps are really something, and the grapics although not anywhere near the likes of KZ2 do a convinceing job. Sound really is sublime though and it'll make you want to remove the silencer from your gun just for the hell of it LOL. Talking of guns theres a serious amount of thought gone into the weapon loadouts and setups with so many options your prety much covered no mater what your style of play is.
I think the word "sim" can be happily attached to SOCOM, theres alot of things in it which will make your standard FPS fan at firs say "It's broke, theyve done that wrong and WE NEED A PATCH!" but they'd be wrong, theres lots of peculiarities in there which are there for a reason, to make the game more real! Stand in the middle of a street with your finger clamped on the triger of a suport gun all that will happen is every enemy will know adsactly where you are and will be on there way, you'll hit very little, but make a huge amount of noise doing it LOL Go prone and at a few choice bits to your support gun and with the aid of a team mate watching your back you can lock down whole streets by the use of well aimed burst fire, and as long as you don't stay in one spot too long you ain't gone take on in the bonce from your friendly enemy sniper! Oh yeah and a shot to the head........lights out, no "it bounced of my helmet" you just crumple!
I was in a match earlier and was following a guy called "bulldog" double teaming stoping at street corners, doorways and stairs taking it in turn to cover each other as we moved foreward. We decided to go to higher ground to try and spot the enemy, I covered the stairs from the bottom as he ran up onto a roof. I quickly followed him up only to discover hed ran into 2 guys on the roof! well it all kicked off, I got 2 bursts off at a guy in cover in the far corner as bulldog got mowed down to my right.......what do you do?......Simply, panic and run back down the stairs as quick as your little merc legs can go LOL That really is the difference between run and gun FPS and SOCOM, it's the fear of getting dead!

Personally, I'm not looking for a game like COD4 (MW2 will do that for me). I am looking for a game with tactics and teamwork, so this sounds like the real deal. As for the graphics, they don't have to be poo-poo hot all the time. If the gameplay is spot on, then the graphics are of little importance.... Just as long as they are not 2d sprites! I also like the no respawn thing, it can be tiresome killing the same guy over and over sometimes.

You just said the magic words pal! I mentioned in the KZ2 thread that any shooter that was worth its salt allowed you to go prone (KZ2 doesn't), but this one is obviously one of those shooters that do! Give me a couple of weeks, and I'll get it! 👍

Killzone is full of meatheads though, they need not go prone as they are to manly and will face their enemy. This is why they wear lights on their head. I love KZ i must admit, but I've been waiting for Socom for a while now and ironically I have no money...

£20 without the mic and cheaper if you shop around. It has to have the most anal load out system I've yet to see on a console. Take your clothes.......ok so first up theres about a doven camo paterns, then each item of clothing can have different paterns, nothing new if youve played R6V......but heres the killer you have to select 3 lots of everything, urban, desert and night missions, but wait, then theres the decision of what coloured straps your kit should have! Oh then desighn your clan badge which gous on your uniform...increadible LOL this even filters to the guns, should I have the big silencer on my SA 80 or the REALLY BIG SILENCER?
When I mentioned the graphics earlier, there not what you would call bad nor last gen, clouds of dust and litter blow arund the streets and the lighting on the dusk levels is very very good, draw distances also are...well as far as you coul want and further, there just not the enthasis of the game, some of the character anamations can be comical and some textures rough close up but thats about it. Online I havent had any hint of lag (yet) nor any freezing or glytches, everything seems to do what you'd expect, right down to the coms, which I would say 80% of people use!

Right well first night in and I've learned about half of the crossroads map.....ie I know roughly the road layout and a couple of the sniper and choke points. I found playing on a respawn match (private noob lobby) helped alot, and yes you could see the flow of the game speeded up and people were being more recless simply because you had 2 respawns. but it certainly wasn't run and gun with the huge crossroads map meening you had a fair old jog from spawn to battle LOL
The map itself has some nice sniper spots that have a really high vantage position, you can't really get good shots onto the street level but most roof tops and the other sniper spots are viable. I didn't go for a sniper rifle, but I did flick my SA80 over to single shot and through the 4X ACOG scope I could pull off headshots at 100meters whilst kneeling, I even managed a prone shot with this set up of 160 meters, it wasnt clean but the 4th shot nailed him in the head. after that the snipers had me located and I didnt stand a chance LOL

I have the map layouts that people made on my ps3. I'll try and send them to you hereward. There about like the ones that sea snipers made for the older socoms. I've tried to send them to other people but couldn't get them to confirm if they received them or not.

If you get a message from me and it doesn't contain the maps, let me know and i'll try again.

Their not the greatest blueprints ever, but they will help give you a feel for the maps quicker.

Cheers matey, and please don't give them to Scaff, I need an edge, I throw grenades like a girl LOL
cheers for accepting the clan invite Scaff, I'll was just seeing how it works, I'll do a proper GTPlanet one, with the party system and 4v4 matches it's much easier for a bunch of GTP members to just get together at any time and have some clan matches, no need to set a time, people can jump in and jump out of games as and when they come on. Anyone else wants to join in just shout up, if your around your in, if your not then absaloutly no problems.

No I need them bad.

Just played a match on the map with the old ruins in it and my sole contribution to the body count over the 6 rounds I played in was 1 kill assist.

I did however get kudos for coms work and keeping a guy pinned down while someone else got behind him and tagged him.

The map with all the satellite dishes in (around the water) is simply stunning as well, played on that earlier today and its a great map and looks damn good as well.

Loving this game (even if I am rubbish).

Wish you hadn't mentioned those maps, I havent seen them yet, must have only been on 2 maps so far, even with a couple of dozen matches under my belt.....this game is going to take a long time to get good at! I'm seriously thinking of arming some smoke to get through some of those choke points or to cause a distraction to lure enemy into a kill zone, or maybe a claymore or 2 then go sit half a mile away and wait for a poor sap......the poserbilities LOL

Did the maps go through hereward? I tried to send them all as 1 attachment. I think there is actually 1 map missing from the game. I can't seem to remember which 1 it is.
I'll try and send them to you too scaff. If I hadn't lost my usb flash drive I could post them on this site.
That probably isn't a bad idea really. If either of you guys have the time, and I can actually get them sent to you, maybe one of you could post them.

Scaff, which psn do you use for socom?

bevo, I got your message with attached image, I haven't checked through the images yet but I'll post as soon as I do, I have replied on PSN to let you know I have them

Thanks
Owen

Send a friend request and I will OK it the next time I fire the PS3 up (which will be later today).

Scaff

I already sent the maps to your gtp name, I'll send them and the request to your other one today.

Wow this game is good. I've only just started and already I'm getting somewhere: making slow progress. My top number of kills so far is 4 but thankfully the game is very rewarding and it makes you feel happy.

Slight problem with it: I sometimes get automatically taken back to the PS home menu, it quits the game at random. I think it's stopped, I don't want it happening again.

I think Herward organised a clan: I got an invite and we had a few matches so maybe we could start up a thread for the clan.

Hi pepsi sorry I darted away, that last set of matches I had a phone glued to my ear whilst trying to play, didn't work LOL You REALLY need your headset pluged in for matches pepsi, wasn't so bad when you were with niehder but if you were on my side I would have hurled abuse at ya LOL 2v1 was getting a little strained on such a big map but I had a laugh hunting the pair of you down, Niehders antics in the bell tower was quite funny and thee was lots of post death danceing going on LOL
Theres actualy 4 of us in the clan now but I don't think the game will have a big enough following on GTP to warrant a thread, I'll post up stuff via the clan lessenger but for now this thread should sufice.
That grenade I nailed you with from the roof through the door was a classic by the way, just starting to get to grips with them, claymores next LOL
If you see me on shout up I'll invite you into party mode, oh and that goes for anyone, if you want to join the clan also shout up, I'm going to disband the current one and start a new one so if your already a member I'll send you new invites. SAS clan, kellys heroes, GTP sufix you get the SA80 (good all rounder) and the SAS body armour, standard clan camo is the british desert patern. I'll sort a new badge out as well.
I'll be on for the next few hours!

Hi guys i have got socom and been on it round my m8's house and it is just like socom off old and cant wait to play you lot when i get a new PS3 next thrusday it is so much better than killzone 2 that i will be trading killzone 2 in.
