some questions about ps1/2 emulation on ps3

ok so right now the 60g ps3 are 499 with EE and soon there will be a 80g ps3 for 599, probally 499 once the 60s run out. so I have some questions about the emulation and how software compares to the hardware.

we know what the advantages of the hardware are, almost 100 percent BC.
what are the advantages of the software???

here is a list of other questions I have about the EE vs software debate.

ive heard all kinds of things. I have a few questions.

1. does anyone know for sure that the EE is still even running on current PS3 that have it?? ive heard some people say that it may have been turned off through firmware updates.

2. scaling issues, ive heard that with the EE the PS3 does not scale the games, hence, they do not look good on the new HDTVs. also considering that it seems that the ps2 has one of the worst game lags of all the older systems on the new tvs would this be continued if the games are not scaled with the EE.

3. I believe that without the EE the games can be scaled therefore they may actually look better without the EE.

4. the GS, if this could be eliminated also, would it be possible to re render the games and have them look even better on the ps3 .

5. this one is probally next to impossible to answer, when will they stop working on BC through software, or have they already, there will be a time, probally soon, when they will be satisfied with the BC of th systems and stop working on it, once that happens any game that is not compatible will probably never be. their goal should be nearly 100 percent BC, but I doubt that will happen.

6. if there are actually advantages to the software emulation will we be able to, or can we now, turn the EE off to run BC through software.

Wow....so many questions, so little time. Perhaps these questions may only be properly be answered by someone who has enough cash to buy several different PS3s, one with/one without the Emotion Engine, and every game ever made for both the PS1/PS2/PS3. In addition, this person should also g.a.s. and have the technical expertise to make informed decisions, and provide the necessary feedback that you are requesting.

Any PS1/PS2 game that I have recently played on my PS3, a system that I bought in the U.S., and supposedly with the EE, plays as well, if not better than they did on the console that they were designed for.

If you have so many unanswered questions, you may be better off buying an XBOX 360....an amazing, so-called 'next-gen' gaming system that is widely renowned for its backwards compatibility.

On the consumer's end, nothing. It's actually worse because you have about 88-90% of games working, with a good amount having bugs or slowdown that's not present if you play the game on a PS2. With hardware-enabled BC, the rate of games working is around 98-99%, and basically all of them work just as good as if they were played on a PS2.

It is still running.

2. scaling issues, ive heard that with the EE the PS3 does not scale the games, hence, they do not look good on the new HDTVs. also considering that it seems that the ps2 has one of the worst game lags of all the older systems on the new tvs would this be continued if the games are not scaled with the EE.

PS3s with the EE scale older games.

3. I believe that without the EE the games can be scaled therefore they may actually look better without the EE.

Wrong, see above.

4. the GS, if this could be eliminated also, would it be possible to re render the games and have them look even better on the ps3 .

Possibly, but the 80GB PS3 and the 60GBs in Europe still have the GS, and there's no signs of them removing it.

5. this one is probally next to impossible to answer, when will they stop working on BC through software, or have they already, there will be a time, probally soon, when they will be satisfied with the BC of th systems and stop working on it, once that happens any game that is not compatible will probably never be. their goal should be nearly 100 percent BC, but I doubt that will happen.

Considering that they're always updating, adding, or fixing older games with each firmware release like caffeinated monkeys, I don't think it will happen anytime soon. If it does happen, it will be when the emulation meets the level of hardware enabled BC.

6. if there are actually advantages to the software emulation will we be able to, or can we now, turn the EE off to run BC through software.

You cannot turn off the EE, but like I said before there is no need to.

thanks for a proper answer, unlike the poster before you, who is obviously a moron.

those are pretty much the answers I was expecting, I figured as much, except the part about them not giving up on the BC updates eventually. we would all hope that they would only stop when it was at or very near where current hardware is not, but im not so sure they wont give up sooner than that, I hope im wrong though.

dont take this the wrong way or anything, but how can you know for sure that the EE is in fact still running??

I'm a member at another forum, and a couple of posters talked about how Soul Calibur III ran on their PS3s recently. The guy with the hardware-enabled BC PS3 had absolutely no slowdown when playing the game. The guy with the software-enabled PS3 did have slowdown. That, and the fact that Sony really has no reason to disable the EE via firmware updates are really my only supporting facts. I'm not 100% positive they turned it off, but it's not likely they have.

If the game works and runs, why does it matter?Every game I own for PS1 and PS2 works and runs fine.

That is the attitude I am taking with my ps3, if it works it works, if it doesn't then I'll throw it in the ps1/ps2. All of my ps2 games that I have played in my ps3 have had no lag or anything, so i guess it just depends on how you are running your BC.
