Because it's a ridiculously popular game, and really, if I was into that sort of thing, that would be the coolest thing ever. Sony will explore about everything it can do with the PS3, just like Microsoft will with the 360.

This just in... SONY to release every mediocre fad game to sell units. There's even word that they may be making a familly game consisting of all of your familly favorites, from Tidily Winks and Pick Up Sticks, to the perhaps more refined Backgammon and Checkers… It's bringing the world of board games into the 21st century like never before... Of course I hope you know I'm seriously sarcastic here... 👎

You know, with all of the "little" things they're doing in recent past, so near lauch time, I'm afraid that perhaps old SONY is scrambling... Is that fear on their brows? I fear the choices to be made... A kid's system AKA WII. A glichy as all hell system that breaks down all the time AKA the 360. Or a system that's constanly changing and has still yet to be released and may never see the light of day... AKA the PS3... Who knows, maybe card games are the way to go...

What the hell are you talking about?

Hey... hey... no flames in here... please.

Although I absolutely detest Yu-Gi-Oh and the Pokemon card games... I don't think this is a move in desperation for Sony, more an acknowledgement of how big a part games like Pokemon have played in Nintendo's success.

This game sounds interesting actually, but once someone's hacked the visual codes, I don't see how it'll be possible to keep them from cheating in online play.

If they keep the price of the disc itself very cheap, and randomize cards, offer expansion packs and the like... they could be onto something here... sort of like recapturing the "Magic" craze of yesteryear (wow... that was long ago... I was actually still in college then! )

The one problem in Magic-style games is the need for an outside and impartial arbiter... and cards just don't capture the imagination of some people... if I'm reading the article right, this game has very simple core rules, but should have deep gameplay... and the PS3 will act as an arbiter... not really worth buying the PS3 just for the game, but it'll increase the utility of the console immensely.

You think you are being funny and having a witty way to make a point but on my PS2 I have Trivial Pursuit and on my PC I have Monopoly, Life, Operation, Risk, Battleship, and Chess. Having a board game digitized and made to be played online is not a bad thing. I can still play Risk with college friends I haven't seen in person for three years and my brother can still tear me up at Monopoly even though we live in different cities. How would doing this kind of thing be any different than having an already popular video game, such as GT, become online? The difference here is that these are family friendly games that were typically only played face to face, nothing else.

Now they are taking that concept and allowing kids who play card games and buy the cards to have an opportunity to actually play face to face or online against one another. They could also hone their skills against an AI. And during all of this they also get some cool fight scenes to go along with it.

There are already videogames out there that emulate the card games, but don't actually have the cards.

And then of course imagine a nice scenario where a family is broken up by divorce or a parent being in the military or even just away on business for a week and the kids can still have a family event with their parent. Gaming consoles are about more than killing each other and testing your skills against one another. You can easily use them to build family bonds despite distances or circumstances.

The possibilities for things like this are endless. Besides, having kids buy new cards over time would be a way to create a continual source of profit from a game yet allow each upgrade to be cheap enough for kids to play along with expansions.

My Mom is selling her house and I had to clean all my stuff out this past weekend and I found my Magic cards. I wonder if they still have any value left to them.

Point taken then guys... I was making a point that it's not what I'm spending 700$ for... And doubt that many other gamers would... If you like the game, play em, but it's not like these kinds of games couldn't be made on a system as simply as a PS1... That's all behold the power of the PS3... Flip a card, your turn... Half the fun of those games is collecting the cards...

You're how old... Either to young to know better, or an old dude in the manner of Comic-Book Guy from the Simpsons. You are not the master of the Pokemon... It's only a game... You are not a Wizard so take off you Gandolf costume fan boy... And my inteligence is fine thanks, I don't need to know how to defeat a water dragon using a rune stone...

Well, I hope no one buys a PS3 for just one game. Well maybe GT, but any average game would be pointless.

Everyone knows you don't use a rune stone. You tap your red mana bank and use all the counters to give yourself a 30/30 hydra. If you don't have a hydra then you toss out the Nivenyrrals Disc and wipe the board clean of all creatures and enchantments. :sly:

I think it's scarry that I still remember that move after ten years. :scared:

Is it to late to use a counter spell?

It must be said though, digitised board/ card games are crap...usually, the card game on FF8 was cool though as it actually had a decent game with it.

LMFAO!!! 👍

Board games digitalized? I would check out a cool chess game with life like characters that beat the living snot out of their victims when you make a killing move. They could even have different themes for it. I hope this technology they're incorporating into the PS3 is expanded beyond Yu-gi-oh type card games.

Can you counter-spell an artifact?

I think the point of this is to use regular card games, like Magic or whatever else is out now, but the PS3 would actually show you the fight scenes. The game isn't digitized but it has become interactive.

EDIT:

It was called Battle Chess and it was for PC. They actually made it more comical than anything, but in the orignal version it was nights and kings and what not but in Battle Chess 2000 you had robots and aliens.

I also had some sort of game on my Commodore where in order to take a spot on the board you and the other player actually had to play out the battle and teh winner got the spot. It was cool because you had things like a phoenix or banshee and basilisk and each had their own kind of weapon.

Of course that was all played on screen and there was no scanner reading a real life board.

Luckily, at least some are still focussed on gameplay rather than visuals only, this is what I call proper gameplay:sly:

I'd like to see Role-playing Chess, actually.

"Knight takes pawn."

"Oh yeah? Well my pawn has a ton of exp and a HUGE wang! Checkmate."

I hope Archon come to the PS3. Remember Archon? That was one sweet Commodore 64 game.

Personally I’m looking forward to this type of gaming, and yes a have a huge collection of magic the gathering cards even though I don’t know how to play it :) (I just collect them for the artwork, I’m a bit of a geek that way :D)

I would love to have mahjong and chess to break up the monotonous 24h endurance races in GT4, imaging playing GT5 and you put it on B-Spec mode, then switching to your OS and playing a very low power consuming version of either game while you wait for the race to finish (yes I hate endurance races)

Maybe Sony is trying to add too much value for money, but IMO the more the merrier.

That is exactly what I was talking about. That game rocked! I wish I could get it on my PC. The only place I have seen it was a 3-disc collection of Commodore games from a British company but it would be about $60 before shipping. I think after shipping it was about $75.

An updated version would be awesome with a detailed chess board and then a full fighting sequence, aka Tekken or something along those lines. Maybe even an FPS-style level. It would combine both strategy and reflexes into one game.
