Idunno what's up with it. More than likely, it'll end up going to appeals court. They also don't say much on the specifics of which part of the rumble feature Sony has apparently ripped off.

It'll probably end up in Sony paying them a "don't say anything about this" sum of money just to keep them quiet and still allow the selling of PS2s in the US. Regardless it sucks.

It is a repost. However, I mentioned it in my stock exchange thread... I didn't think anyone would create an entire thread on the same information.

Why are they going after Sony? I've never really played the X-box, but I'd bet they have vibrating controllers. And I KNOW the GameCube does. So why aren't they getting sued? What makes their stuff so much different from the Playstation?

It doesn't matter what the product does. It's how it does it. Incandescent lightbulbs and flourescent light bulbs are different but do the exact same thing -- they light up a room. However, if someone stole a "special" lightbulb design, even though there are lightbulbs already, it is still illegal. That's why they're going after Sony.

It's a lawsuit concerning patent infringement. Sony has been found guilty of using Immersions design without a licensing agreement. Now they have to pay $90 million USD.

ohhh.

well, that really isnt alot of money - to them. Unless im wrong, Sony makes TONS of money.

Yes, but to stop selling the PS and PS2 in America would be quite the hit, so they'll have to do one of those "take this, keep it quiet" things, which more than likely will be a lot of money.

Bunch of Oportunist bastards.

Why didn't they make the claim about 10 years ago?

They waited for Sony to get rich with it, then sue them off. They are probably going to take all that money in for a nice vacation, instead of using it to make more games like Sony.

I hope they take their vacation on Sri Lanka.

You are aware that this case has been going on for years? The ruling occured today, and Sony was ordered to pay the $90 million. Originally it was $83 million but because of the years of interest accumulation it ended up being $90 million. So to answer you question, they did make the claim several years ago.

They waited for Sony to get rich with it, then sue them off.

Wrong. They took action immediately when they found out. Court proceedings take time.

Immersion does not make games, so it's pointless to say that.

random business source
Immersion Corporation is a provider of haptic technology that brings the sense of feel/touch to markets. The Company develops, manufactures, licenses and supports a range of hardware and software technologies that let users interact with digital devices using their sense of touch. It focuses on four application areas: consumer, computing and entertainment; industrial and automotive; three-dimensional (3D) and professional products, and medical simulation.

I hope they take their vacation on Sri Lanka.

I hope they do too. They deserve a vacation after what Sony put the company through for years.

They wont stop selling PS2's, Sony will just pay up if it comes down to that.

If this was microsoft in sonys place, I bet the tone of this thread would be quite different...

Funny you should mention Microsoft! đź’ˇ

Immersion sued Microsoft a few years back as well -- and they won.

Yes, that's what I'm saying, and more than likely the amount they would pay for them to keep quiet about it wouldn't be a misely 90 million dollars.

It has nothing to do with "hush money". As long as Sony pays Immersion licensing fees to use their patent, there should not be a problem with PlayStation sales.
