Sony's new HDD

Sorry if this topic has been discussed before. I searched and found nothing. Anyway, Sony recently announced the release date of its HDD (hard drive) for March of 2004. This would coincide neatly with GT4's projected release. How friggin awesome would it be if you could d/l new cars/tracks/race kits/whatever into your HDD and use in GT4?!?! Just imagine: The number of cars in the game could be limitless. They could even charge for a d/l pack of say 10 new cars and I bet people would pay for it. You could go to the PD website and order cars a la carte! I think this would be a great addition to the game (although I doubt it will make any use of the HDD).

You won't be able to, PD and Sony have both confirmed that GT4 wont use the HDD.

But that was when the release date was to be in November. With this SEMA thing they are still adding things to it rather then finishing it.

Would be awesome if you could have new cars. The only problem with it would be that PD would need to release an SDK or give info on their modelling (LOD's and such), and also info on the physics etc.
GT5 would be a possibility (maybe for the PS3?). I'd love to see something like this introduced.

If it ever happened I don't think PD would give the tools to the public to make cars, it's all about real cars and I don't think thay would want any non real cars racing round with whatever power you wanted them to have etc.

i agree

I care more about new tracks and race configs rather than new cars. But YES it would be amazingly cool if you could download stuff. I've downloaded content on my XBox and it really does add nicely to the game. New Mechs in Mechassault, new maps in Ghost Recon ... such and such.

think about it if you could DL cars there would be alot of cheaters out there dling cars that are fast... and would ruin the fun of a gran turismo game or any racing game? do you guys agree?

But the true question is will Sony put "Real" use to the HD unlike Xbox. Yeah the box can dl new stuff but levels(tracks) and charactors(cars)? thats it? What about game demos, games!, user interfaces, video previews, music, file sharing, movies, and anything to use up the many gigabytes. We should be able to create and share game videos and replays through file sharing. Xbox has none of these things without having to void its warranty. Microsoft is a bunch of d*cks for holding back "simple" features and making people pay for extra stuff, conky usb ports,no out of box DVD have to by a remote crap and xbox live only online "pay".*sigh.

Sorry thats was my rant but i kept it short :) i have so much more to complain about.

edit: they want to keep the Xbox as far from a PC as possible but they are going to far restricting it.

The really great thing we could get out of the HDD would be caching the current games while you're playing them to get faster load times. That would be bad ass.

If I want to watch movies or change interfaces etc I will use my PC, also as far as filesharing goes what could you share other than car settings and ghost cars and performace times which you can do on X-Box live, at least in a couple of new games anyway.

Not if they were aded to the dealerships and not your garage, that way you would still have to buy them, or if the download cost you in game Cr but added the car to your garage.

Thats nice that you are all for less capabiltites but i wasnt saysing just racing games. Plus many people use their consoles to watch DVD's. And all the things I mentioned have been done on the Xbox through modding. Not everyone can afford console, DVD player and PC. It would make the non rich feel like they are getting their moneys worth being able to do all that.

true, but they might release cars themselves over the internet over a period of time.

Thats fair enough then, I personally doubt I would use it but I'm not going to complain if they put thoes features in, if it makes other people happy who's to argue.

Most people watch DVD movies on their TV, either with a console or a dvd player.

I wasn't talking about DVD's. you can already do that on your PS2, I was talking about smaller clips of games, films, ads etc like you can download off the internet.

I'm gonna get this thing as soon as it is released (including everything necessary for online play). With the new HDD, chances are that we will have people creating their own cars for the game (how sick would that be?). I mean, I'm sure that there are going to be a bunch of people who are going to buy the game, throw it into their PC, and learn how to make their own cars in a day. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we see MK coming out with a program that will allow people to custom-edit the cars (fins, tuning stuffs, spoilers, paint jobs...). Heck, I might even end up designing some of the Holden cars to be available for the game (only the online play though, and I can't guarantee their stability either...).

No you won't be able to make your own cars. GT4 won't use the HDD, also each car in GT4 takes around 2 weeks to model and peoples custom made cars in GT would be crap, GT is about authenticity. If GT4 has had some changes by release on the HDD front it turns out it will use it, any new cars availabel to download will be made by PD or a team chosen by them who PD feel ar good enought and they will all be real cars.

the hdd has been out for a very long time but in the format of the linux kit. that only means no ff11 bundled with the hd. u gotta buy the linux kit from sony's site if u want it

Well it has been out in Japan for a LONG time, heck even FFX supports the HDD in Japan.

Downloading cars??

It could be perfectly possible. PD could keep building cars and release them on the Internet, so we could download them into the HDD.

However, only PD should do that. If modders start to make their own cars they could ruin the game with crappy and unrealistic cars. No thanks. :)
