I want to know what these announcers are like. I have seen vids on Google Video which seem to be from American tv coverage, and it sounds like 1 Brit and 2 Americans. Or possibly 2 Brits and 1 American. They don't seem to know too much.

If you search for "cbs f1" on google video, you get last year's San Marino race.

Wow it sounds weird for me to hear American announcers announcing Formula 1.

It depends on which American TV coverage you were watching. The SPEED TV coverage has Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett. Matchett was a mechanic for Benetton 1990-1998. He does a wonderful job commenting on the technology side of the F1 cars and contributing to the commentary in general. David Hobbs was a racing driver and competed in various events, including sports cars, touring cars, Indy cars, IMSA and Formula One. He has participated in both the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He also competed in six Formula 1 races in the late 60s and 70s. Both Hobbs and Matchett are English. Bob Varsha is on the crew for just general stuff. Their coverage is so much better than CBSs it is not even funny.

SPEED also has Peter Windsor reporting information from the pit lane and he does a great job at it.

I think CBSs commentators are Derek Daly and Ralph Sheehan, but I'm not really sure. I have cycles of listening to them and then toning them out throughout a race. Both of them are good in bits and spurts, but carrying a whole race isn't their forte. Part of the problem is CBS telling both to dumbdown the commentary to make it more accessible for a wider audience and it doesn't work. If CBS would just use the SPEED commentators and let them do their thing, there wouldn't be any problem; as they do a great job of making the race accessible to a wide audience, while not dumbing down the program at the same time.

True statement. Ralph commentates other races and racing series, and is much less annoying. Derek used to be much better at broadcasting, but for some reason, he's started to go senile in his 50's.

The SPEED crew isn't perfect, but they're damn good, have a lot of experience, and know what they're taking about.

Anyone remember the Rick DeBruhl days? I felt so bad for him. It was obvious that he really liked doing the F1 races, and was really trying hard to do well, but people ripped him incessantly for things like talking over the start and asking seemingly stupid questions to his broadcast mates.

can anybody tell me what time(eastern time) the race will be on CBS? i just cant seem to find the TV scheduele(sp) on the CBS website.

It's on at 1 PM eastern, I think.
 
According to TVGuide.com, the Spanish Grand Prix is on at Noon on Sunday.

Aside from bad commentating, CBS also does not have a pre-race show or inside grand prix :(

i remember watching imola on CBS. derek daily said "schumacher is currently leading the race with alonso right behind. Schumacher is in the red car while alonso is in the blue and yellow renault"

i just find that very funny and i actually laughed out loud

That was a good one, but I like the six to eight reminders that the lap counter in the top of the screen counts down.:dunce:

Ok yah, that really sounds weird. I just watched it and they were awful. They weren't the guys that I heard before. One of the American announcers sounds very Irish. Their pronounciation is very strange.

It's ironic that all the left handed tracks begin with the letter "I" is it? That's what they think!
 
The irish one is Derek Daly whom we all complain about.

The pair of them on CBS are basically the Bill and Ted of Formula 1.

I remember during Imola. I'll assume that Daly said this. But it was something like:

"These cars, are controlled by their drivers . . . through a steering wheel"

Wonderful sir!! In case their was any doubt that cars aren't controlled by drivers, who on top of that, use steering wheels. . .

I basically agree; I'm a huge fan of Montoya and he usually does well on this circuit as long as he doesn't do anything stupid— which, I suppose could be said for most of his races. Damn.

I'm kind of dissapointed in Kimi though because I know how well he can do, even winning more races than Alonso in 2K5, but this year, sadly, his car doesn't appear to be up-to-par....

I agree about the commentators. The American one just shouts all the time.

"Massa has come into the pits!"
"Alonso turned left!"
"47 laps to go!"

etc...

Derek Daly is just about as bad. I actually have the 1992 Belgian GP with Daly commentating and he hasn't improved with time :lol:

Red flag qualifying during the first session, and there's 7:29 to go. A lot of drivers don't have a lap in. Uh oh.

The red flag was caused by Coulthard, when he slammed into the wall. He's got to need a engine change, but northing's official.

The track is now green, and it's a mad rush.

Holy crap, that was so awesome! The last five minutes were the most exciting minutes I've ever seen in a qualifying. The last two were even more spectacular! Wow! This was more exciting than some races!

This race is going to be big. And too bad it has to be on CBS. Damn.

A Renault 1-2, and Alonso earning pole in his home country. It doesn't get any better than that.

I believe he got called in to the weigh station. According to Brundle Alonso's pole time was quicker than last year's pole time. Fast pace indeed and great laps from the Renaults.
 
Yeah, provisional pole last year was 1:14.7s—they’re not slow this year.
 
I'm thinking of doing a 2004/2005/2006 side-by-side quali video comparison if anyone's interested. I've got the 2004 and 2006 pole laps from Australia but I can't find 2005.
 
Just a quick question:
Why do some of the top teams like Honda bother putting on a new set of tyres in first quali because they know their going to get through anyway. Cant they just keep the tyres on from testing because when the red flag went up JB was on a new set which just got wasted.

I think tomorrows race will be very good. Just very disappointed about DC's accident. I thought he would do well today...

Well it should be an interesting race with Renault qualifying 1-2 and Ferrari qualifying 3-4. Toyota also did a pretty good job qualifying having taken places 6-7.
