Actually, it's a sensor on the output shaft of the transmission, not on the engine itself. That way it accounts for what gear you're in automatically, because there is no variation in the gearing between the output shaft and the wheels.Originally posted by Bahbo

youd also have to have it prorammed for each gear because each gear runs at a diff rpm.
