[Facetious]I thought it made it worse? I mean, you use lots of fuel but your car's mileage doesn't increase![Facetious]

I thought you're about to ask disconnecting the speedo makes cops come at you more for excessive speeding

Tsk, you people know nothing! When u disconnec da speedo it maek u go fasta becoz da speedo is a big ass restricta on ur ca!!11!!1!1!

If your car is made before 1994, then no. If it was made during or after 1994, then yes.

The cutoff was August 12, 1994, so if your car was made (not sold, but made) before that date, then it has no effect.

Isn't that common knowledge?

i think thats only because if youre speedometer is what runs your odometer. so ur not really getting better mileage. its just not being counted.

i am the obvious captain

I wouldn't recommend doing this though, how would you know how fast your going.

What? Im confused. Am I for real? Am I stupid cause i don't know exactly how a speedometer is attached to the drivetrain?:odd:I didn't know that was suppost to be common knowlage. Don't be as ass.

Yeah really - even if disconnecting the speedo did improve gas mileage, you'd have to be an idiot to do it.

The Speedometer (at least some that I know of) is run by a small (very tiny) oil line (like I said, not all). It measures speed based on the oil pressure or something like that. I think they do it electronically now (at least on some)...

i dont know what kind of speedo calculates speed from oil pressure:lol: but i know analog speedometers have a cable with a notched gear, thats turned by a worm gear(threaded like a screw)on the driveshaft, that spins a rotating wire inside the cable measuring the mph/kmh.

oh yah and digi speedos have a sensor mounted next to a gear in the tranny and as the teeth on the gear spin the sensor picks up on the speed of the gear and with a chip it translates it into mph/kmh

you'd think it wouldnt be very accurate if its measured from the engine and not the tranny, beings you could rev it in neutral and have the speedo climb:confused:
youd also have to have it prorammed for each gear because each gear runs at a diff rpm.

thx guys, i just found out why my sister got her speedo d/c b/c it she wanted to stop the mileage meter from going too high lol

Note to self: unkn0wn's sister is a law-breaking con-artist who is at this very moment commiting vehicle fraud.

Actually, it's a sensor on the output shaft of the transmission, not on the engine itself. That way it accounts for what gear you're in automatically, because there is no variation in the gearing between the output shaft and the wheels.

So neutral revs show no speed increase, but spinning the wheels will.
