Haven't seen that car in a while, Chris; your picture is good in terms of composition and lighting. I just wish the shadows were a bit more accentuated. ;)

I'm not sure what's Nicolas workflow with light. But i'm using Knoll Light Factory 3.0. It's little pricey, but they have trial too. It's PS plugin and gives very nice results.
 
I'm using Gimp, I create a separate layer with a white graduation, draw some white lines and then blur all this, not really a secret. :D

I guess just maybe more practice. I am doing what sounds like the same thing but it comes out looking like a monkey with a banana is running the mouse, and he's more interested in the banana. lol
