Standard cockpits: An interesting idea...

OK, so now we know we are going to have ‘standard’ cars with an interior view. Well I had some expectations on what generic would mean, and honestly those black interiors are too generic for my liking if you know what I mean... (I can not even see the wheel on those generic interior views).

On the other hand it seems they had devoloped some not so generic interiors spceially for all open wheelers, examples: Caterharm and Pescarolo (I think this was on one of the screenshots from the playstation blog) which look much better.

And then an idea came up to my mind, we have race cars with open and closed cockpits, rally cars, classic cars, 80s and 90s cars, supercars, new cars and so on...

We have premium MX5s, Skylines, 300ZX, Jaguars, Aston Martins, and so on and so on...

So why PD did not think on reuse premium interior views for those cars that are similar to those as standards?

Open cockpits, here I understand they would like to do something more in detail to match the real car so I hope we will have interior views customized for each open cockpit cars.

Race cars with closed cockpit, why do not develop a generic (but detailed) interior view for all LMP cars and similar?

The same for DTM cars, just build one and apply to all DTM cars.

Supercars, rally cars, classic cars (just make an interior with wood and classic wheel).

Summarizing the idea would be to create no more than 10-15 interior views with full detail, working gauges, lighting, etc... and apply it for all cars that fit on that category.

For open cockpits make something more customized as I think they will implement anyway.

For the rest they could reuse the existing premium interior that we already have if the car is more or less the same.

Ok, now some might say this is against perfection, probably sacrilege, and I understand that Yamauchi would probably implement black generic interior views before do this recycling, but I think most of us would like this idea as I think the gaming experience would be much better.

Ok guys share your thoughts, do you like this idea?

Honestly, I'd rather have blacked out cockpits than generic inaccurate ones.

Personally, I use the hood/dial view and I'm not fussed.
Its intriguing to how much people want cock-pit views, but I think PD are doing the best they can 👍 which is always welcomed.

I agree with the OP, in Standard cars they could have made an generic GOOD cockpit for the similar ones, like the DTM, Super GT, etc

I hope that they've made this!

Have to agree with this.

I understand completely what you mean, but blacked out cockpits are as inaccurate as those from my idea, and they would be premium ones, with high detail. What is the difference then?

I was about to say the same thing. Blacked out ones are more accurate?

If they are blacked out, they are just blacked out, it will be a generic view and there wont be any major fails (apart from the fact its black!).

If you have cockpits for each type, if done well, that would be great, but have a generic cockpit view, with wood rimmed steering wheel, for a car they may not have had it, will set some people off.

From the screen shots we have scene regarding the update, some vehicles seem to have fared better, with regards to their cockpit, than others. So it may be a 50/50 between totally blacked out views and semi-authentic views.

To be honest, all cars should have authentic cockpit views, but that's a topic for another time!

I never understood why, when they have basically near identical cars, why don't they just model the interior for one car and copy it over to the variants? It's better than nothing, even if there may be some slight inaccuracies. I also wonder what will happen with cars like the Jay Leno car, where they basically already have an interior designed.

I guess your definition of generic was way off then... Those cockpits fit the definition of generic pretty well.

I do however agree with the points you make. Miatas could use the interior of the premium older Miata, same with the Skylines, etc.

On the other hand it seems they had devoloped some not so generic interiors specially for all open wheelers, examples: Caterharm and Pescarolo (I think this was on one of the screenshots from the playstation blog) which look much better.

This is actually incorrect, the interiors on the open cockpit cars, have always been there, even in GT4.

I do not want to emphatically take credit for this, but when Kaz first started his twitter account for a little chat to promote the Honda CR-Z I mentioned this to him. It is nice to finally see it come to fruition.

You mean in-car but not as cockpit view obviously, it is not the same, to build a cockpit view needs some development.

I was thinking the same... It is a good idea but PD don't want to use the cockpit of one car on another car, so all we have is 800 black cockpits, that is great aswell!!! :)

We have to be fair with PD as we will not have 800 black cockpits, I am a bit curious to check what different cockpit we get for Sauber C9, Nissan R89 and R92, Jaguar and the likes, I do not think they will put that black view on those cars, it has to be something different. It has to be.

Caterharm and Pescarolo (I think this was on one of the screenshots from the playstation blog) which look much better.
They only seem to look better, because the cars already HAVE these low-res details, they even had them in GT4. All cars in GT5 also have a steering wheel, which the animated driver uses, but the interiors are just blacked out on closed cars.

They more or less just placed the cams in the models and fixed the mirrors, which is okay to me and what I wished for Standards.

EDIT:
To be honest, a not detailed view, but with a texturized dashboard could also work (think ToCA Race Driver 3), but then the fov would change.

It's pretty simple really. Any 'open car' previously in GT4 will have at least some detail of the interior. As such, they can just place the camera where the driver's head is, and it's fine. The 'closed cars' have no such interior detail, hence the blacking out of the dashboard area. I don't love it, but it's better than nothing I think. At least good job to PD for listening to the community.

Some cars fo have a high quality cockpit.
There are 2 screenshots i saw with that.
The caterham and a Pescarolo courage judd race car.
Like the guy above me said. +1

All depends on the view out the window; never mind the gauges!

I may race a standard now :)

None of the cars are better or worse, just happens that the open topped standards will just have the camera moved... they're actually horrendously ugly in the interior, dials won't work and they're burred.

Exactly, I don't mind it though, better than bumper cam to me.

I was about to say the same thing. Blacked out ones are more accurate?

Black out ones are neither more accurate nor inaccurate, but using a generic premium interior would be always inaccurate...

Can someone please tell me why the interior view on standard cars use the bumper view HUD? The interior view HUD used in premium cars would seem more appropiate somehow...

I agree and disagree, the bumpercam HUD with the analog instruments definitely makes sense on normal cars. Would've liked to see the digital instruments for LMPs etc. though. When I play with enough sound, I might switch the HUD off anyway, just like I do in Premium cars.

No, it's not, just look at the dashboard details.
The car looked like that in GT4 too.

Lol, completely forgot about that. :-) My bad.
