Anyone see the show about him on BBC Saturday? It was really good. The man was a genius, albeit a tad bit inaccesible at times.

What films of his have you seen and what did you think?

I've seen Full Metal Jacket

It was kind of wierd. Overall, I thought it was a good movie. It was somewhat comical, yet serious at the same time.

Yeah. It's almost like two seperate movies. Most movies are roughly divided into thirds. Full Metal Jacket was divided in half. Training and War.

Kubrick is pretty good. Kubrick is who Oliver Stone wants to be when he grows up, but he'll never be smart enough.

Kubrick has made some amazing films, but sometimes the direction is a little masturbatory at times... like he's in love with some certain ideas and he crams them into the movie even though they don't quite fit.

I've seen a fair bit of his stuff:
- The Shining
- A Clockwork Orange
- 2001
- Full Metal Jacket
- Dr Strangelove (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)
- Spartacus

He was usually controversial, occasionally boring and pompous, but I'll always respect someone who approaches their film-making as an art form rather than a commercial product

I'd be interested to see Eyes Wide Shut, but not being able to stand Tom Cruise is a considerable hinderance.

I didn't like Eyes Wide Shut . I could see where it was going and thought it generally failed. Basically a very cynical statement about love, loyalty, and honesty... or something.

Maybe you could say when he was great he was the geatest but whe he sucked he really sucked.

I'm always grateful for directors like him, though... the few who have the vision and gift of truly great filmaking, retain complete creative control, and still manage to get the cash a piece of crap like Independence Day got. The studio worked for him , in a way.
