Starfield

Oh dear! Looks like this will absolutely destroy my CPU/GPU. I think I'll wait a while and see if performance improves.
You should be fine. There’s a DLSS plugin that you can use as well so don’t worry. :)

but for the fans of Fallout and Skyrim this should be right up their alley.
I've loved all of the most recent Fallout games and Skyrim held my attention for a stupid number of hours so I'm going to be getting the early access thing on Game Pass for this. Plus, it has a photo mode, so I'm basically already sold.

Hopefully this game distracts me from the disappointment of Forza Motorsport.

Wednesday can't come soon enough!

God damn lore everywhere. Not making much progress on any quests, but I’m loving every minute. I guess Bethesda just needed to make a space game for me to start getting what they are all about. Fallout is just too goofy and Skyrim I just grew out of although it was fun in my early 20s. This feels like a much more serious game and that’s exactly what I wanted.

Actually, having seen a few reviews and YT vids I'm more worried about the game itself now rather than the performance.
That said, I do have a tendency to just seek out negative reviews.

Voice acting is great for the most part so far. Even lip synch is not bad at all. For all the noise CDPR made about Jaali, lip synch in Starfield is better than that (but overall NPC animation isn’t perfect, still, miles better than any other Bethesda game).

Pretty addicted to Starfield already. 6 hours in. Only did the mandatory first two story missions and have been on my own ever since. Have not left the city yet.

Same thing. About 8 hours in and I haven’t even met Sarah and the rest of the Constellation. Just checking out the city and getting used to things still.

Must admit, I loved Skyrim and liked some of the fallout games. So that aspect I know I’d enjoy.

It doesn’t bother me about the limited space flight stuff or loading screens etc.

I’m gutted we don’t have a PS5 version, never say never, but I’m sure it’s a long way off if they do decide to release one.

A good first look by Obsidian Ant who’s opinions I trust when it comes to space games.

Warning of possible spoilers if people are avoiding them…

I've managed to get a couple of hours in this evening. Not very far into it, decided to go for a wander and keep getting killed trying to take out some random people at an abandoned facility I came across. It seems harder than Skyrim and Fallout. That's probably a good thing.

The game is running fairly smooth and stable on my RTX3080 with a Ryzen 5800 CPU. It's not perfectly smooth, but it's pretty smooth on high settings. The loading times on my new M.2 SSD are very fast, too, a few seconds each time.

The combat seems more intense than Fallout, the AI flank and cover and going against higher numbers of them early on, isn't a good idea. Take my word for that.

The voice acting is good so far, but I'm very early on. I've not had any bugs, one gripe is when trying to loot destroyed ships, I kept getting up out of the pilot seat, something I also did a few times during combat. I need to get used to the quick and long press, and using the same keys that way for different things. It's something I think I will get used to after a couple of plays.

So far, early impressions are good. But it's too early to give a proper verdict.

I really like it so far, space flight is limited to sector space which is actually not that bad of a thing. The actual flight experience does remind me of Elite Dangerous but much more forgiving. The gunplay is the best Bethesda has ever put out, the controls feel tight and staying on target is not a problem. The quest spam did make me start over after a few hours, I am now going to chill and try out a few things before really getting in to it.

Compared to NMS, the majority of the “in space” part of Starfield is not so much “flying” as “point & click”. Inventory management is going to be a pain.

Maybe it’s just me & maybe I fell into the hype too much but so far I’m a little underwhelmed by it. In general it just feels a little bit “clunky” and a little too similar to Fallout4.

I was expecting something new rather than the repackaged feeling I am getting.(XBoxX)

Edit: Oops…habit from GT7 forum. sorry

Did you get the premium edition on PS5?

The way I made “space stuff” feel much better is use scanner (LB) to jump to planets, systems, etc, instead of doing it through the map menu. This way it feels a lot more seamless as you get cutscenes showing your ship instead of just a long loading screen. It’s not Elite Dangerous, but it’s good enough for me. I knew the limitations before getting the game and I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m actually very happy as it far exceeded my expectations on many levels. Like I said, never was a huge fan of Bethesda games, but this has potential to climb up to the top of my favourite games ever made and I’m only 16 hours in. Another thing that makes me very happy is there’s going to be DLC and fixes, improvement. Game isn’t even released yet officially! Insane that they have all this working so well on Day -5!

Edit: Just found out you can just jump between levels on New Atlantis, so you don't have to take the train. Neat.
Some photos I took from my ROG Ally. Amazing that it runs on a handheld at 30 fps and looks this good.

I need to stop being such a pack rat, I have to get everything, even those useless folders and dumbbells. Of course just like in NMS I go crazy with the mining laser too. Maybe I need to try building an outpost to store all the things.

20 hours in and game is fast approaching 10/10 territory. Still haven’t done outposts, ship building, didn’t get a single power or visit the other two major cities other than New Atlantis. Just needs to tune up the UI, inventory management, and a few other things, and it’s going to be 10/10 in my book. Combat balance feels so good so far.

I'm a few hours in now and I've died a few times trying to clear "abandoned" facilities while clearly underequipped for that at the moment. I've made my way to New Atlantis and spent a couple of hours finding my way around there and doing a few side missions.

All in all, I'm enjoying it a lot so far. With DLC and mod support, I can see this game lasting a long time. There are a lot of quests to just stumble across. At least so far there are.

Just got to New Atlantis myself, and while I'm getting very strong overall vibes of "Fallout 4 and Prey had a wild weekend in Atlantic City and Skyrim drunkenly stumbled into the wrong hotel room with them", it's not really a bad thing. If anything it feels like this is kind of the definitive version of a Bethesda game, picking all of the best parts from each representative game and putting them together in one package.

My main goal right now is to earn enough money to really dig into the ship builder and put together something unique, instead of just some upgraded shields and the gaudy rocket jockey paint scheme I slapped onto the Frontier.

"The internet" has absolutely lost its **** that IGN gave it a 7...

To be fair, 7/10 has long been the video game reviewer code for "I think this is mediocre but I'm not going to badmouth it because this game company gives my employer lots of ad revenue".

Update

Well, and bucking the apparent trend, my opinion is that I have wasted £31.00 on getting the upgrade.

I have to say that this game is proving to be the most overrated, mediocre, non-event I have ever seen.

I was just about to give my in depth reasons for these opinions, but tbh, I’ve wasted enough time on it already. :grumpy::boggled::ill:

I think it’s an amazing game, but at the current state it’s a flawed masterpiece, so not quite 10/10.

30 hours in and I’m still only level 11. It feels like leveling up is taking a long time and since many things require you to have a given skill unlocked (some multiple levels of it), it may feel a bit limiting. I guess it’s good in a way that even hundreds of hours in you’ll still be unlocking new stuff, but maybe the balance needs to be tuned slightly.

Another thing is resource management. Maybe eventually it will become second nature, but for now I have no idea what different resources do and keeping track of what specific resource I’m lacking to build a specific structure or upgrade is feeling like a chore. I get why they have tons of different resources - this way you will need to explore a variety of planets, but I wish there was a simple way to point me to where I need to go or give some direction when I want to build or upgrade something. Maybe it’s there and I just don’t know how to make it easier?

Another thing is about “junk” items. Im fine with people being excited about picking up random junk, but I wish the game would automatically highlight useful things like resources, weapons, etc, so you don’t have to figure out which one of the 10 items on the table is non-junk.

So yeah, most of my issues with the game are QOL features that could be added either by the devs or mods later down the road. I’m actually really appreciative of the fast travel options in the game. You can do it the hard way by running to your ship, taking off, grav jumping, landing, walking, etc. or you can fast travel if you only have limited gaming time available. Could it be even more “sim” in terms of the space travel and loading screens? Sure. But it’s not as bad as some make it out.

I dunno, I like this method better really. Having the perk unlocks be attached to relatively simple gameplay tasks rather than arbitrary level locks means you can concentrate on specific skills if you want, rather than having to either sit on your upgrade points for 10+ levels or spread them into dump skills. Gaining XP doesn't seem to be that much slower from other games really, and there are some food items that can raise your XP gain for a while too. It's a lot more engaging than sitting in a corner casting a spell for two hours until you can spend another point of that specific type of magic.

You can unlock a perk that will highlight needed resources on the scanner, though it's a mid-tier option. Since a lot of people don't really bother with making their own upgrades and just use whatever they end up looting, getting stuck into being a full-on crafter is somethng you have to build up towards. The Trade Authority places seem to sell most resources in some quantity too, so that's a (somewhat expensive) option as well.
Another thing is about “junk” items. Im fine with people being excited about picking up random junk, but I wish the game would automatically highlight useful things like resources, weapons, etc, so you don’t have to figure out which one of the 10 items on the table is non-junk.
Generally anything that ends up in the Misc. tab of your inventory is junk and can be safely discarded if you want, something I learned thanks to Fallout 4 conditioning me to obsessively grab every roll of duct tape I could find since they used to be needed for upgrading. It's also noteworthy that when you hover over something that's used for crafting it'll say so in the tooltip description that comes up.

Though on both this and the previous point, something the game doesn't explain to you outright is that you can transfer items from your personal inventory to your ship's cargo at any time from the ship overview, and even craft with or sell stuff right out of the cargo hold without having to transfer it back to your person, so grabbing everything and then sorting through it later is somewhat less of an issue. And considering some of those junk items can be pretty valuable, packratting is still as much of a viable money making option in the early game as it is in any Bethesda game.

This game is amazing, I've put in 30 hours so far and it's hard to stop playing.

There are so many storylines you can just fall into that are both interesting and well written.

Gun combat and space combat are both really good.

The starship building is out of this world.

There is no way in hell this game deserves a 7/10.

I've come across 1 bug in the last 30 hours and I barely noticed it.

If you've been waiting for a proper Mass Effect, you should really jump in on this.
