Stereo vs exhaust

Well, I have another dilemma. I want my car to sound sick but I also want my stereo to be hardcore. So I want your opinions, as well as pros and cons of which ones come first... All I can think of right now is that my parents would probably be happier with a stereo.. Thanks :)
 
Wait weren't you the one who started a thread about a $2000 first car? So $2000 on the car, the deck costs $100 minimum, amp around $300 min., the sub $150 min., and the box $75... $625 for just that plus amp wiring kit at $70, dash kit at $20, wiring harness at $10 and your now over $700 for a sound system that is in no way "hardcore" (whatever that means) and you have to wire it yourself. If you can't wire it yourself then it's another $150 in labour too....

Why not put that money into a better car? Stereos aren't for first cars and at most a deck, save it for your next one.
 
What kind of car do you have?
It would be easier for others to help if you gave more information.

The way your post is worded, it seems like your options are:
a) Buy a fart can, annoy people
b) buy a cheap stereo that's loud, have the option to annoy people.

My personal advice?
c) Save up the money for your next car.

If it has to be either a) or b), go with the stereo. For god's sake, don't be the ricer guy who thinks his car sounds like a race car, when it really sounds like your exhaust fell apart.
 
Speakers, and please for the love of all that's good don't just spend it all on a sik subwoofa.
 
You want your car to sound sick, and your stereo to sound hardcore? Pull one of the spark plugs to make it sound sick, and put a bunch of gentlemans movies in the CD player so it sounds hardcore.

Ah, but I must respectfully disagree. I love my stereo - it's nothing crazy, but with the upgraded deck, speakers, and addition of a sub and bigger amplifier, I can make sure that my music will always sound much better than it would otherwise. And it's fun to show off - not gonna lie. It thumps real good when I want it to. :cool:

As for the OP, if you can afford it, upgrade the stereo first for sure. But listen to Tesla - buy a good deck and actual speakers before you add the subwoofer otherwise it'll sound horrible.

Not going to lie, everyone at school thought the car sounded tough as with the exhaust it had, and I liked that. Thinking back, we all had no idea lol.

No one can tell you what you want dude. When you get older your priorities change. A simple deck and speaker upgrade does me now and I focus on performance. Remembering back though, I used to LOVE my stereo. The exhaust sounded great and I used to love listening to that too. However one thing to keep in mind - chicks don't like exhausts, they like being able to listen to their crappy ass music when you take them places. Brownie points man.

I've left my exhaust stock - I don't want my car to sound like a NASCAR. But without any other noises your car might start to rattle if you get a big stereo - so you'll either need to crank the dial or get LOTS of Dynamat to cover everything with! Either way a stereo or an exhaust will be a test of your car's build quality.
 
If you are going to get a sound system buy it used, there's a ton of stuff out there on Craigslist. Also attempt to buy halfway decent stuff and don't go for the headunit with a bunch of buttons, lights and motions...it'll just break. You must also remember too, if you have a stereo and people know about it, you'll probably get it nicked.

I had two sound systems in my Blazer, one was stolen and the other went with the truck when I sold it. The second one was much better than the first one and I ran mostly Infinity stuff. It sounded great and the bass was very good without having that annoying hammer sound. If you are going to put a sub in your car, I'd recommend the Infinity Basslink. For $300 you get a 200W amp and sub in one unit, it's also quite compact so you don't ruin your truck/hatch space.

I'd stay away from exhausts, they don't do anything unless you have other parts to go along with it. All you'll end up doing is having a car that sounds like it has a hole in the muffler and you won't be any faster.
 
The solution is to have two cars - one that's comfortable with a nice stereo, and the other that's gnarly with a loud exhaust.

Pretty much this.

A good stereo is something you can enjoy every time you drive something... Loud exhaust? Well, err, um... It gets a bit annoying after a while. And by a while, I mean about 20 minutes of normal driving. When you're thrashing something it's okay, but when you're just trying to get to the grocery store? Not so much.

Open headers are just stock manifolds or actual headers (high performance manifolds) with no pipes under the car that are usually attached to the manifolds. Short straight pipe vs a long pipe out the rear of the car. In simpler terms, no exhaust except for the short pipe that comes off the engine.

My imagination is confused.
 
how about spending all that extra money on making your car go faster or drive better instead of wasting it on showing off or making your car sound awful. Good sound doesn't come from the exhaust, it comes from a good motor and every one will know that you've got power.
