I totally agree with an earlier reply. Quality over quantity any day(period)!!!!!!!!!!! If it doesn't sound good on the inside who cares how loud it is? If it doesn't make the cars performance better who cares how loud it is?

In short, obnoxiously loud and a great way to get tickets.

And your neighbors to hate you.

Here in NY, any car before '96 doesn't need exhaust or emissions. They can't ticket you. The neighbors however....

You might not need it on your car, but my guess it you'd still violate noise ordinances which applies to anything loud.

^ True. At least a stereo would come with that all-important volume knob... you can't turn a loud exhaust off.

For a first car that's even more of a waste of money.

Well I'm guessing because he never said what car he has. If it's a neon or something then certainly not. If he's got something sporty with potential then I'd go for it.

I guess if you don't mind buying tires all the time... or repainting your car.

Haha. I know where he's coming from. The coolness of being a teenager. Nothing wrong with that. I was kind of the same way, but I knew I wanted a car that sounded good but also was built good. My first car was a '78 Chevy pickup. I bought it when I was 15 (started working when I turned 14) and my dad and I worked on her almost every weekend. We dropped a newly rebuilt smallblock in there and added a few performance upgrades. The truck sounded mean. But I also respected the power because I sunk almost every dollar that I earned in it. If you are in a similar situation, and can put more time and money in it, then I recommend doing something like that. If not, just save up your money. Too many kids have cool stereos. There aren't many with a well built car that sounds mean.

As far as the open headers go, I took mine to school one day with the headers open. I got there really early so no one would really notice it. And once school let out, I started it up and set off multiple alarms, and everyone was looking and smiling. I thought I was badass. Until the next day when they told me i couldn't park it on school grounds anymore. :indiff:

Nope. They can't do anything if it's before that year. Anything after has to be within the ordinance or you will recieve a hefty fine. They regulated it that when when they set up emissions in '97. You can have it as loud as a jet and they won't do anything. I looked into when I was looking at buying a '86 Mustang GT that had open headers on the 5.0.

They did that to my friend and he told them he wouldn't come to school anymore so they allowed it XD.

That's a rather stupid law, I woudn't be happy to hear your rambly Camaro come down the road at 2am.

^^It is stupid I agree. But that's how it is like it or not. Most people take care tho.

Here's my input. I have a good sound system in the 240sx. Aftermarket headunit, 4 Polk Audio speakers and a Kicker CVR10 sub. It sounds awesome and crisp.

Now, With my exhaust, the subwoofer kind of meddles in with the sound of the exhaust and it doesn't sound near as crisp and nice as it used to, unless I'm stilling idling at a intersection or something.

That being said, with a factory sound system, it would probably sound like crap at all times with my exhaust noise in the background.

Don't get a loud exhaust, they'll just annoy everyone around you, and eventually, you'll dislike it. When you pour money into a decent stereo and then can't hear it over your fart can, it's annoying. My first cars flex pipe was badly cracked, so my car was super loud, some people thought it was cool, but I had to really crank the volume, which eventually would give you a headache.

Get a new head unit, that alone will make your stereo sound better as it will send more power to your speakers. Having upgraded speakers does nothing if you still have a crap head unit. As for exhaust, get something that is quite under regular driving (I.E under 3k ish.) but grows louder as you start harping on it. That way you don't piss off your neighbors, can still hear your music and others in you car, and you don't get a headache.

They did that to my friend and he told them he wouldn't come to school anymore so they told him he would be ticketed for truancy.

Fixed that for you.

Just get the sound system. For the same amount of money, you can get a nicer sound system than you can an exhaust. And don't bother taking anything off your car to make it louder. It might be louder, but it will also sound like 🤬.

Get a good stereo setup that outputs around 150 db and box tuned to output around 25hz notes 👍. PLEASE PLEASE use dampening if you plan on going for subs, dont want your car sounding like a rattle can. If no subs, go for good component + midbass speakers bundled with a crossover. Also go for a ported box if your going for subs.

edit: forgot head unit... Yes get a good head unit. Dont go for JVC... Had problems with them.. On my 3rd JVC unit. Get a good Pioneer unit.

For your exhaust setup(hardcore???)... Its up to you to find out. The aftermarket is very dense with options. DO RESEARCH FOO!!!! GOOGLE!!!! You will find better information:tup:.

Yes I love bass (pure bass head)... I shall motivate you to go for a system like this :dopey:... Hairtricks FTW!!! Something that breaks every sound ordinance law and shakes everything in a 1 mile radius :scared:
