Successor to the G27

It's interesting to me that Logitech does not get bashed as much as some other wheel companies seem to be. Imagine the frenzy if Fanatec had a totally new wheel about to come out and it leaked that it launches ready to go in a month. Or maybe they do too? ;-)

Maybe its because Logitech dont really give the public a reason to bash them.

What's meant with bashing here I wonder?

If it is the faults in logitech their equipment, then they have been pointed out many times over and over again as well.
If it is about product reliability. Well Logitech has always been about reliability and good customer service/relations since they have started. It is a name they don't want to loose by releasing products that have issues within 12 months time (apart from the rare case).

If Logitech release a dodgy product than we will see a whole bucket load of bashing I am sure. Especially since they are in a tight spot and have said to quite development for console items. So everyone is really watching them now as to what they next moves will be.
So yeah, crucial times for Logitech and maybe some bashing about bad decisions will be coming soon for you to eat popcorn with, RacerXX.

Now can we go back on topic of the 'successor of the G27'?

What do you guys want in a G29?
- Driven by gear/drivebelt/vbelt/chain/directdrive?
- Rim size?
- SLI build in?
- Kind of pedals?
- How many buttons?
- What kind of shifter?
- Anything else to add...?
- Price range?

Again, some of you are a damn egoists!:grumpy:
There are 300 country where Fanatec doesn't ship their products, like my country Israele, a whole continente like Africa, Asia and all Latin America, so I'm happy that Logitech could produce a new steering wheel that can be available around the world:tup:👍 and not only first world 👎👎👎!
I wanted to upgrade my G27 from a while , but I can't because here in Israele there is no Fanatec and the tr500 is too expensive for what it gives in term of ffb!

I was trying to point out that it would be nice if the thread wasn't sent off course into the Logitech vs. Fanatec mess it would surely become in which BOTH wheels were being "bashed." That seems to be ALL his comment was meant for. Maybe I'm being a little blunt, but as you can see the thread already started to take that turn.

Anyhow, as for the wheel...

I think it's time they updated. If they've been listening, which they likely have, they know what's working and what is not. They should know what sim racers are looking for as well. To answer LogiForce's question...

One of the keys for them is to keep the wheel affordable. They have filled that niche and will probably continue to do so. Thus, the following is said with that in mind:

What do you guys want in a G29?

- Driven by gear/drivebelt/vbelt/chain/directdrive?
Timing belt. Metal shaft, bearing supported at it's furthest extents. The drive mechanisms and bearing supports should all be metal construction. Dual motors are fine, it's working for them. Each motor should be on it's own drive belt.

- Rim size?
11" to 12" Might need a few more buttons.

- SLI build in?

While it would be cheap to add in some fashion. I think their rev lights are enough, personally. A gear indicator would be nice I suppose.

- Kind of pedals?

Longer pedal arms, heavier springs. The brake should not use a load cell unless the mechanics of it are well designed and proven to last. A small beam load cell would work but would be unlikely. Rather, they would be better off using a progressing spring/rubber solution and gearing the brake pedal pot to travel appropriately.

- How many buttons?
Slightly more :p

- What kind of shifter?

Same or similar design. However, stiffer components should be used and wear parts should be looked at closely to reduce the looseness that their current shifters experience over time. Some things should be changed to metal, some should be changed to "plastic" Go back to the G25 design of switching between sequential and gated modes.

- Price range?

$275 - $325 (actual sale price, not msrp)

Back to the topic at hand...they should use an antimatter drive! Hehe. I am interested to see what they come up with. Hopefully it will be a technological jump instead of a baby step. In reality, I'd like to see a belt drive also. The current gear drive I don't care for. More wheel torque would also be very welcome.

I doubt will see major changes to the wheel. They have a very solid, reliable and popular product as is. While Id love to see a highend logitech wheel, the wheel would be priced too high for their market. I think will see small improvements. I think the code wheel was probably the biggest issue they had with returns. So probably an improvement there, which could also maybe help with the dead zone and shaking. Maybe upgrades for the stiffness of pedals and shifter and hopefully maybe bring back sequential mode. Maybe some cosmetic upgrades. Keeps the price the same or close and you get some good improvements for people to want to upgrade. They would leave a huge market behind with a highend wheel.

You are wrong about the fact that the code wheel is the reason for the deadzone and oscillation.

First of all the deadzone was coded into the firmware of the G25 and G27 to prevent the oscillation.
The oscillation itself is a result from the space between the gears causing the motors to be able to turn to far, and since the code wheel is attached to one of those motors it constantly wants to correct itself.

Solution Code Wheel
A brass replacement code wheel (to replace the plastic one). Costs $30.00USD (+7.00 worldwide shipping)

So my wish is the same as Basher's and eKretz in this case, a toothed belt. This should fix a lot of problems. Maybe add a steering shaft mounted sensor like Fanatec did, though I didn't feel this aided much in the removal of the oscillation effects when your hands are too relaxed on the wheel.

I don't know if I wish for more buttons to be added to the wheel. It would just get more confusing if they would still add unofficial PS3 support.

Though if there would be extra buttons than I would like to have a display on there that would show the incoming signal(s) and their clipping points. As well as buttons/controls to adjust things on the fly.
Also the display could be used to show other info like lap times, rev meter, top speed, fuel levels and so on while racing.

Also a more powerful and longer skewed armature motor with ball bearings would be nice to see. Can be a dual motor solution as long as proper tension is kept on the belt.

And if possible at least a 300mm leather wheel (same size as T500) would be nice.

Apart from this I have little wishes as it would become too expensive I think.

Edit:
I just wish to add (in respect to my display wish) that they can bring their GamePanel tech over from their keyboards to this product. It won't add much extra manufacturing or development costs. So it could be a possibility that this will be included somehow.

G29 huh? Belt drive would be nice, larger wheel, but keep it uncluttered... 6 buttons and a horn button would be nice, maybe work the DFGT dial control on there, but keep the d-pad and most buttons on the shifter panel. Make the shifter a bit heavier, but no need to go wild, it is pretty good. Pedals are good, maybe a factory NIXIM style brake, load cell would be ideal but seems a little expensive for production. Finally, upgradable firmware with Fanatec style adjustments from the wheel. If they could make that happen for $399 I think they would have a winner.

from what i gathered from their tech support it will be based of the g27 it will be improved
so i imagine it will have things that a lot of people asked for like he g25 shifter. it being quieter. More support
speaking to logitech support it will be about £300
*note he didn't say the exact price but i asked what the price would be with a 50% discount he said about £150 so judging from this it going to be £300
logictech will probably improve the wheel according to feedback in the most cost effective way

Looks like the G27 is no longer/scarcely available in several country's.
In the USA there still are some available but in Europe prices have risen at the shops that still have some left. Or the status has changed to "no longer available".

Lowest price was about 220 euro and that already jumped to about 320 euro.

It also disappeared from several local Logitech sites.

So if you still want one better hurry.

Interesting... They don't list any controllers at all on the GB site.

I don't think it will be called "G29".

Well, I (still) don't think there'll be a successor to the G27, as Logitech said they would discontinue their gaming-series. Though, if there'll be one, I think they'll come up with a fitting name for it 👍.

However when speaking to Logitech they put wheels under the pc stuff
The console stuff is the controllers.

The G27 is re-released as part of Logitech's new G series. But somehow the re-release is taking longer in Europe...

I called Logitech support today, and it should be available in Europe any moment now, probably beginning of june.
