Suddenly...the "ring"!

Even with the closest cockpit view it still feels super narrow to me. I was there recently and did 2 laps in my rental focus and the track is pretty wide. A lot wider than the game makes it seem.

It's likely because you are going A LOT faster in the game. As mentioned before, field of view is a big factor, go into photomode and keep zooming out, then put the camera low to the track. You'll likely find a point where scale will start to match up.

Took me 18 months to run the 24 hour track with day/night cycle, what in god took me so long?

The ring is GT5, pity the 24 hour cycle is only featured in one A spec race and you need to be up to level 40 to run it. It should have been the very first race with time acceleration at 10 to show off what GT5 could do.

I love it, only reason I stop playing Forza is to run the ring, Monaco and Spa on GT5.

Are there other tracks like the ring?

Not quite but there are similar aspects in many tracks but there is no match for ring in length. Some could argue that Virginia international raceway has some aspects and even our small Ahvenisto track has some similarities.

Because most of you do not know ahvenisto, here is one good lap:

The ring is the definitive gt5 experience.
When I would host Nurburgring lobbies, I would set to two laps, time advancement on 30. That woulda make it so a full day would cycle through the duration of a race.

The downhill section beyond the carousel, before dottinger-höhe, is my favorite part. Especially at night!

I'm probably in the minority but I go back to GT5 because of Suzuka.

The 'ring is a tolled public road.

I'd like a balls out spin on the Stelvio pass (60 hairpins!) and the Transfagarasan mountain route (60 miles of twisties), these roads would be perfect for GT cos you'd risk killing yourself there in the real world.

I think Scotland should be in GT5, the whole country.
A couple of thousand years ago, the romans must have arrived, saw all the twisty roads and just went home to work on suspension geometry.

Took them a while then, but I guess they eventually came up with the goods...:)

The Nordschleife only began to make sense (actually, become bearable) to me when I got a wheel on GT4. Trying to drive it with DS controller was a frustrating nightmare for me. Even now I wil only drive the 'Ring if I'm using the wheel, but I still need to the properly learn the section between the Karussell and the main straight.

The 'ring is a tolled public road.

The ring is a tolled public road only for legal and insurance reasons (even overtaking on the right is prohibited during public sessions). You can't go anywhere on it, as it will lead you back to where you started. So, to all intents and purposes, it is a race-track and that only.

So, you cannot compare that to a mountain pass.

Before that they were only used to ovals.

Twisting roads ? try Norway ;-), with potholes to match + cattlegrids.
The Nürburgring in GT5 are very close to the real, seem a bit narrow compared to the real Nurburgring.

I remember on GT4 finding it an overkill and not enjoying it at the beginning. Needless to say as soon as you memorize it, it's easily among the best tracks of the game, if not the best.

It's not a race track but a public road. That it leads you back to where you started stems from it's length by which the curvature of the universe becomes apparent.

I run it in my Bently Speed 8, which to me, is like heaven on wheels, lol. I absolutely love this track now. I have yet to race it online tho.

The Bentley is heaven on wheels - and when you take it to the 'Ring, it"s wheels in heaven. I run the last race in thge series for relaxation - in the Speed 8 it's a Sunday drive.

Another series that has it - with a fine collection of cars to run the track in - is the DTM. Run the cars stock against 35+ AI and it"s two laps of screaming mayhem.

I like the ring
but
The width of a car is not proportional to the road, in reality the track should look a bit more wide

I've heard this often - from people who have actually driven the track IRL, and also happen to play video-games that feature the track.

Don't forget that the 'Ring in Shift, too, (as well as certain 'other' games) is an absolute blast. I run the 'Ring often - in every Racing Game I have that has it.

Cheers.
Harry.

In GT4, I golded that license test... with a vengeance.

Like a sour candy that eventually turns bittersweet; the switch has occurred.

Fixed that for you. The 'ring and all its majesty will never be 100% sweet. It's always going to be unforgiving and relentless.

GT5 and the PS3 is my Nurburgring Simulator. GT6 and the PS4 will too. It's all I ever play, and 9 months into driving it over and over, there is still room for improvement, where every consistent split second feels like a huge achievement.

I found myself actually memorizing the track, something I thought I'd never be able to do personally. The 'Ring is one track that actually gets the adrenaline going way more than any other for me. The whole thing is one big rush, other tracks are only like that in sections for me. I've been doing the latest seasonal with the R35 GT-R TC for fun and profit. :)

Driving the Nürburgring for real, like I do, it's like getting a blow job from a sexy gorgeous photomodell with epilepsy, sooner or later it will end in tears ;-)

I had one crash at Bergwerk already, smashed the drivline into the transmission on a Golf GTI on the high curbs there.. :-O aquaplaned from + 200 km/h until 80 before I hit, and landed sideways into the armco barrier, wiht minor damages on the car itself... gearbox was a mess ;-)

sometimes wheni need to get away, or blow off steam, i'll take a lower HP car, or just an all around fun car and just do laps at the 'ring. its so much fun!

Man, this is cool that this thread has been positive. I didn't think that my excitement over this would bring much of a response/discussion, but it's been good. The views on this track from everyone's perspective (simulation and real-world) have been interesting! This track alone has sparked a new interest for me in GT5. Sort of a hobby within a hobby.

Save the Ring!

I have a funny learning cycle with the 'Ring:

1. Practice some laps, try to get a good time
2. Crash and wipe out, or drive too cautious and slow
3. Get frustrated, give up, then stay away out of fear
4. Gather up some courage to try again
5. Goto 1.

After a long break from practicing the track and having done a fair bit of online racing in the meantime, I thought it'd be a good time to try again. (I tend to practice 500pp on sports/soft.) Previously I'd been struggling to get sub 7:30 times, with just a few cars getting in the high 7:2x range. But over the weekend managed to carve it down to 7:23, then 7:22 and a 7:21 running some cars like the Camaro, the RX7 and RX8.

So I figured may as well try it with the CSL, being a "ring master" car... and pulled off my first sub-7:20 with a 7:19! Inspired by this, I grabbed an NSX. Fiddled with the downforce a bit then managed to run it down to 7:17. Finally went for the biggest gun I know of - the HSC concept - and got it down to a 7:16!

I gave it one more shot before going to bed. About 2-3 minutes in I was about 2 seconds ahead of my 7:16... and then crashed it spectacularly, lol. But now I'm pretty confident I could get it down below 7:15.

What is a good time here at 500pp on sport/soft? Do people get under 7:00??

watch this video. It's excellent.
(bridgetogantry)

This video taught me more about how to 'ring than probably any other video, and it's presented in such a way that you might just remember everything.

B2G 'ring walkthrough

He he, I know Dale, good driver and one of the fastest on bike round the Ring. :-D

Dale? I thought he only drove cars? I know he got rid of the Miata and bought an RX-8, didn't know he had a bike.

You are now ready for the 24hr race. Enjoy.

He did before, family man these days, so I'd guess he just drive cars now. On the bridge to gantry website, I think his laprecord on bike are posted there. :-D
