Super Street magazine interview with PD President

Ok, this is taken from the September 2003 issue of Super Street magazine

SS: "Many of the JGTC drivers we speak to- Keiichi Tsuchiya, Manabu Orido, Nombuteru "No One Better" Tanaguchi - say as much as they drive JGTC, the love drifting. So we're wondering, will we see any D1 Grand-Prix-type events at circuits like Bikoku Highland?"

Kazuni Yamauchi: "Because we are continually seeking the real feel of the car, the physics engine has improved significantly. This will allow for the car to act more naturally, thus you can drift more accurately in the game. Previously, we provided drift tires, drift mode-stuff like that. However, I'm comfortable saying that drifting will be more real in GT4 than it has been in the past. With that said, I am considering a variety of game modes, some of which I cannot share. One significant one - probably the one you are most concerned about - is we will include a "Drift Contest" in the game. We may not name it "D1," however we hope to prodvide that kind of experience for you."

(KICK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

KY: "In the past editions of the GT franchise you've probably noticed we've had cars from Spoon, HKS, and Mine's. Those are actual tuning shop demo cars. We hope to include a wider range of those in the game. Also, we'd like to widen the range in terms of tuner cars for consumers to mess around with."

Man, that will kick so much ass, not only to have a drift contest, but more tuning cars. I PRAY that some of the shop demo cars may include the HKS Track Attack Altezza, and the twin Fujimura Auto Salon Skyline GT-R-34's. And I hope Tskuba Circuit will be in the game as well.

Tsukuba IS in the game...

Just out of interest, why would you want TWO identical cars in the game?

I do hope the "drifting" isn't an integral part of the game that you must complete. That would turn SO many people off...

Only coz its near impossible to pull off a decent drift without a wheel, you just dont have enough control.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard today. I drift perfectly with the controller, maybe you just need practice. Drifting isn't easy you know.

I can drift happily with a DS2. I just don't want to. Making it compulsory would be dumb - like forcing you to do a manouevre you would never, ever do in the game, just so you can hit 100%.

I don't really make it a point to drift anyways. Making it essential to beat the game %100 would totally screw me up transversing driving styles.

Ok, not trying to be rude, but I guess y'all interpreted it differently than me. I came to understand when he said "as a different mode" he meant like, Arcade, Simulation, Drifting. That's my guess. I don't think it will be a major part.

Anyways, I agree that drifting is easy (not necessarily EASIER) with a controller. I can't compare it with a steering wheel since I haven't tried that yet. I mean, hey, I did a perfect feint drift with a 500hp R-34 at the hairpin turn at Laguna Seca. I'd give it to y'all if I knew how to get it onto my computer.

Have y'all noticed there have been multiple copies of cars in GT2 and 3? There were 2 colors of the Nismo R-32 in GT3. There were the two [R] A-Spec RX-7's in GT2. But the Fujimura AS Rocket Dancer Skylines look different for the most part, like the yellow one has bronze Volk GT-N's, and the blue one has magnesium composite TE37's. Both have a 3.0 liter RB series motor, and pretty much all of the engine parts were provided by HKS to produce over 800hp. I'd like them to be in any racing sim.

Huh? It says there is going to be something similar to a Drifting Contest. That sounds like it may be needed for 100 percent.

I guess we'll just have to wait to see.

i am all for some sort of drifting in GT4

i dont care if its in arcade or sim mode as long as its good needs skill drifting not some watered down crap (actually i hope its not in SIM mode so some anti drifting people dont complain)

the GTPlanet forums have been playing up alot lately??

i cant even edit the other post?

i am acually better at playing gt games with the controller than using the wheel. i hope gt4 wont be gt4:drifting legends or some ****. that would really suck. i have nothing against drifting, but i hope it dosent take over the game. also, i am putting this smiley in, because im listening to metal health, and the chorus is "bang your head" :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: .

I don't drift...let me repeat my self, I don't drift. I don't see the point in making the tires slide unless I screwed up somewhere drivingl.

i agree, u dont see the worlds top drivers (f1 drivers) ever drifting, unless they made a mistake- but they dont drift to get faster lap times...
let the drifiting stick to games like automodelista (drift-fanboy games)

So I guess there will be like 100 Skyline's and 100 Evo's, 50 Supra's, 50 NSX's, 50 RX7's, 30 STi's, and ~120 will be the rest of the cars  I really hope they put more variety... something that would be similar to GT2, but with even more european/american cars.

As for the drifting, it should be something optional. Drift competitions? What the hell is a drift competition?
"Oh your vehicle has a beautiful angle in that curve.. 1st prize"

so true. Drifting is not part of racing its what people do in car parks.

I to hope there are not like 20 skylines its a good car but just give us the current and best model the R34 M spec
I want a lot more European and Us cars. Most japanese cars apart from there sports cars look disgusting.

He says he wants more tuner cars? How about this one:

k55h.jpg

Racing Dynamics K55 Sport Coupé Hurricane, it's a BMW 3 Compact with the V12 from the 850i, souped up to 427 BHP, 4.5 sec to 100/62 and 305/190 kph/mph.

Or else, anything from Hamann, AC Schnitzer, Oettinger, Carlsson, ... will do it for me.

How bout the Breyton 3-series with 3.2L inline-6 turbo'ed to 528 bhp and with top speed of 205 mph :D The car corners so well that a special oil pump was placed in the trunk to keep the oil pressure neutral during brutal cornering.

You bring up a good point. Maybe they cant bring in the M5 and M3, but they should bring these tuner cars in at the least.

...then make the M3 and M5 wheels for sale in the wheels section. It'd almost be as good!

I've always been kinda mad that they shafted the German cars in the game. I think it would be great to have shops from Hamann and other companies from Germany.

I think that the game should be in the same direction as GT2. Not only can you buy performance parts from say, Mugen for your Honda, but you should be able to buy wheels, and EFFECTIVE body kits. Not some lowrider junk that does nothing to your car but weigh it down. But there should be at least 3 tuner shop options to get parts from. I want to be able to decide between Endless brakes, Spoon calipers, etc. I know it's supposed to be a driving simulator, but I have always liked games that utilise customization to detailed levels.

No one needs to worry that GT4 will turn into a drift racer cos it won't, the drift challenge is based on a real championship called the D1 cup and cars go out in pairs and have to drift round specially designed tracks next to each other getting poins for how close they are without touching. It's impressive to watch but as for it being in GT4 it will just be the 1 challenge and drifting will be like in GT3 in the normal races, you can if you want to, but it's quicker to take the racing line.

Can't agree with you more. I love drifting.

And for all you haters, it's more than pitching your car sideways in a turn. Read into it, and it MAY become a little more interesting.

Sometimes I will drift a corner if I am getting bored, but I don't want to see a "Contest" that you must complete in order to get 100%. That would be a HUGE mistake.

Maybe they will use a kudos (like project gotham) type points system. So the longer you drift or the bigger (bigger? wider? whatever) the cars angle the more points you get. Would be ok for a multiplayer alternative, or all these people havng these 'drift contests'. But I do agree, if they make it compulsory like the time trials in GT3 it will lick balls, big time.
