Supercharged engine

I was reading about a Viper engine today, but there are few things i wanted to know. For example, what exactly a compressor does? And what are the differences in handling between a supercharged car and a NA car... supposed they're the same car?
Wich one is best for racing?

Difference in handling? Other than the effects that any addition of more horsepower might cause, there's no other reason why handling would be affected other than the added weight of the blower itself.

The supercharger on my car (positive displacement) makes gobs of torque down low, but gets heat soaked pretty quickly. This makes it a poor choice for extended road racing, although it's fine for street use, drag racing, and autocrossing.
