When I was playing GT6 I've noticed that some premium cars have way more polygons than other premium cars. I've created a list about the GT6 new cars that use tessellation (all the premium cars carried from GT5 don't use tessellation)

Here are some examples about the difference between cars without tessellation and cars with tessellation

I didn't realize there was that much of a difference! I do wish though, that the C6 Corvettes used tessellation. They've always been one of the best looking cars in the game, to me anyway.

This is going to stick out like a sore thumb when these cars are shoved into GT7. They will be the new standards to GT7's "premiums".
Like I said earlier, the tesselation should apply to them too on PS4. As a game development student I have quite a bit of knowledge about graphics technologies, and I don't see any technical reason why tesselation could not be implemented on all cars (and it wouldn't require any work on PDs side). The reason it only applies to some cars now is related to the fact that the PS3 doesn't actually support tesselation, so PD has had to do a lot of hacking to get it to work, which probably required specific work on the cars.

Do the GT5 cars stack up as well? I know the Miura has issues.

these "premium 2.0" in GT6 should be at least "standard" cars in GT7

It is more likely that all of the cars from GTHD onwards will be added, including the first "Premiums" (the FD3S and Lancer Evolution IX GSR). The GT3/4/PSP cars have no chance of ending up in GT7 since PD has hopefully heard the outcry.

Definitely.
Theoretically this would work on standard cars too, but they are just not detailed enough to look good afterwards (tesselation can't create detail that isn't there, it just makes things look smoother).

Um, unless i'm missing something this has nothing to do with tesselation. PD have simply put more polys into the newer models.

When racing, this counts for absolutely nothing.

Wasted time which should have been spent completing the game.

Get over it. 👎 He can do whatever he wants with his time. And for all you know, he might've (and probably has, it's that short) completed it already...

Ignore - sorry mate...

Fascinating stuff, emula! 👍

I have already finished the career of the game, so now i have the time to make this

I think he meant on PD's part... as in Tessalation doesn't improve the racing, so PD shouldn't have bother and just added <insert chosen missing feature here> instead.

I think gambleboyen is not berating emula, I think he's saying PD should have spent more time completing the game rather than going into this detail.

In a way I agree with him but the detail really amazed me. Thanks emula for showing it so well.

I think all the tessellation stuff is only a practice run for the next game. To see what detail PD can do with what they had at the start of GT6's creation so when they get the new hardware (PS4) they can expand on it to make it more advanced. The GT6 cars are simply a taster of what we'll get next time around. The tessellation work in GT6 makes the car models as good as the average next gen game (in my opinion) and when the adaptive lighting and stuff gets thrown in too (hopefully) the game will really shine graphically.
I think a lot of GT6 is just beta testing for the next-gen game, testing the water so to speak.

Goddit. Thanks guys. I had my blinkers on... ;)

Nice photos, but if anyone cared to notice that in the photos where the tessellation is clearly seen there is actually much more things for the system to render in that one scene. Each of the angular looking photos has much more things that could stress the engine and tessellation is just a fancy way of culling detail in order to make things look a little more natural and not have that LOD pop in like in GT5. Do you have those photos in their actual snapshot, as in the what was the object of the photo and not just a zoomed in part. Why tessellation is active in photo mode is baffling, the car isn't moving and very little is going on, so the engine shouldn't need tessellation at all in photo mode. Just an observation on my part about the detail in each shot is all.

No the cars added to GT6 do not have more detail than the cars built for GT5, that would stupid and counterproductive. GT5 cars were built the exact same as GT6, they are all super sampled well beyond the PS3's and PS4's capabilities, just reduced in visual detail to fit the program and run. Only a foolish developer would build models of inferior detail only to have to redo those models yet again in 5 years when he could have just developed the model at the highest level possible and using his high powered PC to cull detail to match whatever system he was going to use the model in.

Tessellation in GT6 is hit or miss as at times it works inconveniently and PD should add in code to turn it off and just leave the LOD pop-in as that is easier to stomach than angular wheels for no apparent reason when they were nicely rounded a few seconds earlier.

Note the visual detail is insane on these cars when that tessellation isn't making things all boxy.
