I respect your your opinion, but I honestly feel the DC5 did not surpass the DC2 as the better car. It might have had more power, more features and the like, but for the true driving purist the DC2 has no equal (in its category). evo magazine (who's reviews and opinions I immensely respect), felt that the DC5 ITR lost its "magic" compared to the DC2.
To me it's kind of like comparing the E30 with the E92, yes the new M3 kills the E30 in practically every category, but the E30 is still perceived as the greatest M3 (maybe even any M) car ever, simply because of its purity and cult icon status.
I do understand your thoughts though on cars such as the NSX and RX-7 which have not been replaced and therefore are cemented in that era as classic Japanese 90's sports cars. All I can say is that I'm glad to have started my love of cars in the 90's, and that these were the cars I revered the most in my teenage years.
cool dude. I've always loved DC2's also, don't get me wrong. I was eye'ing a low mileage GS-R when i was 16 near where I lived, but wasn't 16 yet, and a friend picked it up first...the used car dealer had no clue what it was, and had it for nearly half the blue book value. still upset about that haha. I know thats not an ITR, let alone a JDM ITR, but it was close enough for anyone at that age with a couple grand saved. Funny thing is that 11 years later he still has it, all 300,000 miles of it...
I guess my real point was simply that certain cars like this do have successors...and some of them do not...to me, the ones without updated versions are what I put on a higher tier. You could take 50 people and get half of them going with a DC2 over a DC5 and vice versa, both are awesome...same with skylines, although personally i do like R34's more than newer GT-R's.
great example though with the BMW's. I have a sweet spot for all M3's, and most german cars. The E36 probably being my favorite M3, but thats only because I've been around more of them. E30's are simply awesome on an entirely different than anything recent. I currently own a '82 Porsche 928 with only 40,000 miles, and my favorite part about it is that its almost the exact weight and engine output of an E36/E30...just out of 8 cylinders instead of 6 (or 4 for the E30 iirc, that was the turbo 4 right? can't recall)...perfect for me, not too fast, but plenty fast to get into a lot of trouble.
But an FD RX-7? A turbo'd rotary that can grenade with just a small amount of detonation? Thats the type of car we will arguably never see again. There eventually will be another RX-7, but it will be so far from its roots its tough to think about.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes though...have to point out I've never been a fan of late Supra's...always looked like an even fatter late 90's eclipse to me. Not to mention what the fast and the furious did to my high school. I know they are great cars and everything, just not my style. That said, i'd still be thrilled to have one...and would take it over nearly any car built in the last decade in that price range...
