Read post 12, but to sum it up ABS depends upon where you set the brake balance controller. At the higher levels, ABS becomes apparent. If the brake balance controller is set below about 10, ABS is not present.

It's true there is no mention of ABS in the scrolling text but if you do the test on post 12 you will hear ABS functioning at the higher balance controller levels. It's not present at the lower balance controller levels because the brakes grip hard, but not quite hard enough to lock the tires.

why do the wheels lockup then ?

While it may be possible to get the tires to lock, I've never personally run across it. If it were to be my guess, the tires would lock at the lower settings.

My only other guess would be that ABS kicks in at a certain pedal input. I wonder if someone were to set the brakes to 21 front and 15 rear and not give 100% braking input, if the brakes would lock under those conditions? I know for sure that at 21 and 15, they're high enough, that you would hear ABS working if you were to pull the brakes all the way back.

Either I am missing something in this thread or there is no ABS in the game.

If you have to fiddle with the brake balance to prevent lockup then there is no ABS. You need to adjust the brakes to get the best brake performance.

Some cars lockup with defaults settings.

I can not see that there is any evidence of ABS in the game.

Uncle Harry
I agree 100% with the above comments.

The scrolling notes at the bottom of the screen (PAL) make no mention of ABS in the Brake Balance Settings or the ASM settings.

In the special missions and license test when the ASM is working you still get brake lock up and loss of steering until you ease up on the brake pressure.

The scrolling notes for the Brake Balance controller do mention ABS, when you are in the adjustment screen, not when you initially enter the screen. If you actually click on the settings to adjust them it quite clearly states that the brake balance controller affects the ABS system. This is on the UK PAL version of GT4

I have carried out a fair bit of testing on this and while it is not 100% possiable to state if ASM switches off ABS, ABS is definatly in place in the game.

Have a look at the GT4 & Braking thread (the link is in my sig) or just click here to see the ABS test I have carried out so far.

Take a look at the following link, its once again from the GT4 & Brakes thread, it covers Threshold braking and why tyres lock up.

Scaff have you tryed the ABS test on the wet track at all?

i have noticed with my car (real life here) that i can stop faster in the wet if i just let the ABS do all the work where as the dry i stop quicker without it.. (the car is a Xedos6 in the UK, Eunos 500 over here)

does GT4 simulate aquaplaning at all on the wet?

I have not yet had a chance to run the wet track tests on braking, I will try and find the time tonight. I must confess that I bought Enthusia last Friday and have been spending most of my free time on that.

So there is. That's very cool; I stand corrected. I never have bothered to read all of the useful things P.D. has put into the game but I'll look more into their advice.

I only found it because I went looking for it, its a very easy one to miss.

It does prompt you to start reading them, I just wish it was actual text boxes (like the car descriptions back in GT2) rather than the scrolling messages.

well lock up is also accompanied by the LSD settings
Let me double check, so bear with me... I believe the lock up in the LSD settings are relating to on throttle/off throttle applications.

Yeah, from the scrolling information I gathered at the bottom (reading it more carefully now) the LSD settings have everything to do with the differential (positraction and what not) and nothing to do with calipers, pads, or rotors.

If you meant to say the ASM settings, those have more to do with the brake calipers, pads, and rotors. The ASM settings will control each of the brakes on an individual level to get the chassis settled and pointed in the general direction of travel you wish to go.

ASM may also induce more throttle if appropriate. For instance, if a FWD vehicle starts to oversteer, the counter of that is to add throttle. Do the same thing in a RWD vehicle though, and you end up going for a ride. The computer's counter for the rear stepping out in a RWD car is to apply one rear brake as needed in order to tuck the rear end back in line. The driver's input is to add steering input in the direction of the slide. Between these two actions, the car should come out of its slide.

That thread explains why wheels lockup which I understand. What I do not understand is why wheels lockup in the game if ABS is present.

Thats the point of the test, as ABS should stop your wheels from locking up. By testing to see if ASM set to zero switches off ABS we should see longer braking distances when it is set to zero.

The test results did indicate this, but I still do not see this as conclusive, as ABS systems can be set to activate at different levels. This can be experienced in the real world, as some cars have ABS systems that are set to activate as soon as any slip is detected, others activate only when slip has been detected and is increasing.

Edited to add:
I have now posted the results of my wet circuit ABS test in the GT4 & Brakes thread. Either click on the direct link to the post below or use the link in my sig to get to the whole thread.

Be aware that I will not reply to questions regarding the test in this thread, but will in the GT4 & Brakes thread. This is not just me being a pain, but I don't have the time to post what may be answers to the same questions in two different threads.

Thanks Scaff

the way i heard it.
f1 cars dont need abs.
the drivers at speed dont have the strength to push the pedal down far enough to induce loss of traction.
brake assist is banned in f1 since it would help them press the pedal down harder

Reading the scrolling text and it mentions ABS as you say. However they way it is written makes it unclear wether ABS is fitted or not. The ABS part is in brackets and says "The Brake balance controller ..... (when ABS is used).... you can adjust balance.........." and goes on to say it will make the car oversteer or understeer.
How and where I activate the ABS in game is not explained.
I also have issues with the scrolling text instructions not matching the adjustments that are shown on the sliding bar for the Variable diff settings and weight balance.
Maybe ABS is linked to the ASM systems which I always turn off which I have mentioned before.

Exactly how and when the ABS is used is not explained

thanks mate!

Edit: Technically, ABS CAN be shut off. I just took my Dodge RAM Larame and put upgraded brakes plus the brake controller on it. Then I went and set the Brake Controller to 24 in front and 1 on the rear. I went to the test track, drove up to 120 MPH< turned left and slammed on my brakes. ASM was on by the way.

BTW, if anyone has a U.S. ARMAX code for shutting off ABS in GT4, let me know. Thanks in advance 👍
