The appeal of low grip driving

Do you ever see a 450 PP lobby with no tyre restriction and shake your head?

I play GT5 for the enjoyment above all, not to go as fast as possible all the time.
The most enjoyable driving experiences and some of the best races I've had has been with slippy tyres.

Take this video for example.

Do you enjoy low grip racing as much as I do?

Absolutely! 👍
The Spec II physics make low grip racing far more exciting IMO.

IF you are a good driver, then you enjoy the realism and challenge. On the other hand, if you're not that good (or you simply don't care about realistic driving physics and want an arcade-like racing experience), then those type of gamers probably seldom (if ever) voluntarily select comfort tires.

I will say one thing - if you really want to learn the handling characteristics of a car, then sports/hard tires are the absolute grippiest tires that should be used - comfort/softs are even better.

Thats actually one of the main reasons why I choose to drive stock cars over tuned cars. Especially cars that have massive body roll, or vintage cars with soft suspension. The challenge of fighting to keep it inline is the most fun you can have.

Yes, I like "low" grip tires. I race mostly on Comfort tires, Sports Hard tires at most. Unfortunately most online rooms, even for low PP cars, have no tire restrictions enabled.

👍 I love Sports Hard tires.

Agree. Finding rooms with tire restrictions are rarer and rarer.

I always set up a comfort soft, low pp, all aids inc. abs off room whenever I go online. I often prohibit tuning too, but this makes things more awkward for people to find a competitive car sometimes. (I wish I could restrict tuning to power limiter ~10%, and nothing else.)

I usually have to hang around on my own for 20 minutes before the first person joins, but when they do they're typically much faster and cleaner than the average online driver, so it's worth the hassle.

I grew quite tired of all of my cars handling virtually the same, and started a new game using stock cars, only, as well as certain tire restrictions based on PP. (I've also imposed other restrictions, but that's not important right now.)

I'm having the time of my (GT) life.

Think I'm a bit in the middle ground regarding this, I'll admit I do use racing tyres on some high-powered highly tuned roadcars (Racing Medium at most though) yet on some cars I won't go further than Sports Hard, etc.
It depends on each purpose and car but I also don't understand why most rooms seem to use Racing Soft for literally everything, even the most underpowered cars.

There's a huge discrepancy between a small group of 'hardcore' rooms which only use lower grade road tyres and the vast majority of rooms where there's no limit and I'm not always in the mood for either of them (especially the no limit rooms since I refuse to fit Racing Soft tyres on anything other than high-end racecars).

I find this very disappointing as there's a huge unfilled gap most of the time for players like me who aren't strictly purists yet do enjoy a realistic challenge.
The open lobby would be more frequently visited by me if there were far more rooms which would limit the tyre choice to Sports Soft or Racing Hard at most.

👍 I love Sports Hard tires.

Absolutely ! Very frustrating..
I do not play online very often because it's not fair and realistic.
I will never entry a room without restrictions because there is nothing exciting or challeging.

Adding the option for advanced filtering for online race would absolutely awesome!:sly:

Also planning to do that Apmaddock.
You will spend less money on tuning and drive more cars.
You will learn to accept the negative sides of a car and anticipate on it.👍
But starting allover again means , starting allover again, also license and other stuff.

Harrismonkey : You would enjoy racing on Ice/snow with Tank Car by Jay Leno on full Slick tyres isn't it? :scared:

Low grip driving is fun as long as you use a wheel. You can't really enjoy it as much with the limited lock you are aloud as a button basher.

Yes, those are my thoughts exactly.
Less grip = more countersteering = more fun.
That's why I mostly drive cars on comfort tires, more realistic and more fun.

Exactly what I do/look for when I play.

LOVE IT

Rarity indeed

Therefore: shuffle rooms.

Exactly where I have been doing most of my racing lately, mostly clean competitive drivers.

Racing tires in gt5 are for people that can't drive or for those wanting the arcade style racing. They are just not realistic.

Whenever I see a 450pp (or even less sometimes!) room with no tyre restrcitions I cringe. There's no way to overcome the unreal grip of racing softs with that little power. I kind of understand that if you play with a pad low grip racing isn't as fun but with a wheel I think I'd fall asleep trying to race a 450pp car with racing softs.

and that's why there should be a server filter for that, along with tuning prohibited, same car and other settings that are a sign of quality racing.

Most probably it won't be added to gt5, but I'd be very disappointed if it isn't in GT6.

The next big poll: Should PD include doughnut tires in the uprgade section?

I love taking my 700 horsepower Lexus and keeping it on Comfort Softs. It keeps me on the edge at all times. THAT is what racing is all about! :)

Couldn't agree more 👍

I would race with low grip tires but I can't find any lobbies that use them. :indiff:

Same here. I've given up online, just end up wasting time looking for rooms with tyre restrictions. Seems everyone wants to use racing tyres and (most of the time) not experience oversteer.

For me everyday road cars I'll use Comfort hard
Sports cars I'll use Comfort medium
Supercars I'll use Comfort softs

I have done lots of testing with my own GT3 spec cars e.g 430 GT3 using the real life specs and when comparing lap times, Sports medium/Softs are equivalent to real life racing slick tyres (at least GT cars).

Just wish PD would bring back the set parameter style fixed rooms from Prologue with tyre restrictions so that we could enjoy close racing again without having to waste so much time scrolling through public rooms. Given up hope though, I thought the 'online seasonal events' were gonna be against human competitors when they first came about. :indiff:

No, that is driving a 700 horsepower Lexus on Comfort Softs! When you are racing, it doesn't matter what tire you are using as long as everyone in the race is using the same tire. A race on racing softs can be just as exciting and on the edge as any other tire compound.

If your 700 horsepower car is rock steady and drives on a rail when using racing softs, then you are not pushing it hard enough!

OK8

Hell. I play with a DS3 and still enjoy low grip.

I do dream of owning a wheel, though.

A stock Lamborghini Murcealago SV with comfort hard tyres and 50/50 power dist. is bliss on a raining Nurburgring:tup:

Shuffle Racing. Best races I have ever had... some of the worst too but still.

Stock cars on stock tires.

Monstering a Cobra around on sports hard and coming in first make you feel heroic.
