The Bare Necessity - What Do We Really Need?

Again, I don't know your situation or what all you want, but when I look at cars, used or new, I don't settle for anything that I know is not what I wanted.

It's not that - basically I'm not interested in equipment at all, so in a second hand car I'd rather not have it full stop. I don't need electric adjustment for any of the following things: windows, mirrors, sunroof, seats. And as I mentioned, A/C would be nice but it's rather expensive to replace/repair as a rule, so for the three days each year where I'd actually need it I think I can probably cope without.

My point is that I'd rather find a car without these things, as it'd be silly to have a car that had them if I didn't want them, especially if I had to spend money fixing things I never wanted in the first place.

In all honesty, as long as manufacturers keep offering these "excessive" options we don't actually need, I will most likely keep buying them because I like them.

Which is perfectly fine, as long as you're willing to pay for them. Honestly, I don't mind having nice things. Its even better when they make some of these techno goodies standard fare on the cars. But to me, my limit is pretty low.

Keep it simple, keep it cheap, and I keep being happy.

Bare neccesities? For me, manual trans, responsive powertrain, comfy and supportive seat, A/C for when it's raining (it rains a lot here), heat to clear the steam off windows and a kickin' sound system. That's it. I can do without carpet and all that. Oh, and I'll need a armrest

My Jeep Wrangler is pretty basic:

-Manual trans
-Half doors with removable vinyl zippered windows (no locks either)
-Manually removed/installed soft top with vinyl windows
-Heater
-Power Steering/Brakes
-Manual transfer-case shifter
-Manually adjustable seats/mirrors/steering
-No carpeting (rather bedliner)/no cruise control
-Carburetor

The only things I could consider "amenities" are:
-Aftermarket stereo w/iPod cable/sub/amp
-Seat covers
-Intermittent Wipers
-Tachometer
