I've heard almost every engine out there, up close and on the street. Out of all of them, my favorite may be a bit shocking.

I think the best sounding motor I've ever heard was..... A 4AG! Of course, it was no normal 4AG. It was a fully built 20V engine, with an unmuffled exhaust, and ITBs. And it was mounted in a Levin. This motor managed to attract me from across Irwindale Speedway, over all the other motor sounds there.

One car I'd really like to hear is the new M5. Imagine the sound of a V-10 at 8000RPM!

Inline 12 - Ferrari Testarossa
Boxer 12 - Ferrari 512 (I think that is the correct model name).

And Viper - ;)
Hmm.. I know a viper has a V10. Or am I wrong?
I think the best engine might be the inline 12

There should be a poll option for a 'flatplain cranked' V8 as well as normal V8 - they sound totally different.

👍 My favorite road car Ferrari F355 what a gorgeous sound and the 360CS.

I would say rotary at full throttle, just sounds like a mechanical orchestra......Beautiful....

The in line 5 of the quattro ... oh, the sound! :)

Heard a new Viper V10 and that sounded phenomenal too. 8.3-litres anyone?

BMW V12 in the F1 GTR Longtail.

Even the car racing by you sounds amamzing in person!

Rotaries are wierd, IMO. They sound mediocre standing still and up close. But the sound of an FD echoing through a dark canyon in the distance is a sound like no other. There's a local guy with a modified FD, which has a set of $8,000 coilovers, among other things. When he's coming up toward the meeting spot, everyone knows it.

Except for the Toll Ipec Racing one. They use daihatsu engines  Murph's is a proper V8 Supercar.

Lmao! Are you serious!? The Dodo car sounded crap at Bathurst so, that can be excluded to.:D

I'm sorry. No mere automotive engine can hold up a candle once you've heard a Merlin V-12 from a P-51 howling by right off the deck, or felt the ground rumble from a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney radial firing up.
And no piston aircraft can even come close to the sound of an F-14 at full afterburner. Your chest feels like it will rupture, and your eardrums will explode. It is probably the coolest (and loudest) thing I have ever heard in my life.

I like the Renesis's sound but idle sounds odd sometimes. 9K sounds pretty nice. ;)

I also like my Protege's note(which is pretty close to Miatas - same BP 1.8 engine), I'll be in 5th at 2K RPM cruising, very quiet, downshift to 3rd and take it to the redline and it's loud and sporty. My brother's MX-6 also sounds cool, a little on the bassy side though, but you don't hear the engine much under the loud spool sound and peeling out in the middle of 2nd. :)

Inline 6 for me. Think of all the silky smooth inlines that have been made, particularly BMW's line of 6 bangers. Those sound SOO sexy.

And the RB26DETT from the Skyline. Sounds awesome, great power and torque. Hope the Skyline keeps it forever.....:dopey:

The rotary motors would come in a close second, however. Especially the new RENESIS engine in the RX8. Rode in it once, and I still hear it's lustful engine note in my mind.

There ARE some nice sounding 4 bangers, but most aren't as refined as the bigger motors. Most of them sound buzzy and produce lots of racket. 4AGE, B16A, and SR20DET are among the nicer ones out there.

Well, have you heard the 26B outside of GT3? Outside of a video? Prolly not. I haven't.
I drive RX-8's all the time. Drove one yesterday. I hear the Renesis nearly every day I work, both inside the car and outside. I've never even seen the 727/b in real life.

Don't you mean the 787B? Or is the 727B a car I have never heard of.

And there are some videos on the internet of a 787B revving at some car meet, and the sound it produces is just mind blowing.

One more car (that i can think of) had the flat 12.
The Porshce Cisitalia 360 (flat 12, supercharged, 4wd in 1948)

The poll forgot about the flat 8, but I wouldn't have voted for it cause I still wanna hear one. :(

A V-12 sounds pretty good (See: Ferrari, P-51D),
But a V-8 sounds better. Preferably an american one.

No, but I have heard it in a video with quite clear sound, and the car sounds very mindblowing. I've also heard a renesis at 9000RPM its nice but not as nice as an RX-7 at 8500RPM. :)

It's very possible. Worse yet. When David Thexton(Jackass) was driving his "V8". I believe he was using Flinstone power. That's why he never finished a race. He didn't have quick reflexes so he was still running when he hit the sand. He missed his braking points. Team Dodo is Team Nogo.

A Grumman F14A Tomcat

I won't definatively pick one engine over another.

But I will post links to a Pontiac GTO commercial, highlighting the spine-tingling burble emanating from the exhaust pipes...

Low-Res
High-Res

Inline 4... high rev engines... I just like the idea of a small ass engine pumping out lots of power.. and not much engine adding weight to the car... for example, a high reving Toyota engine, such as the 4A, or a Honda B16 engine... just love the sound...

Yes, I am insane about 4 cylinder cars, its true <_<

I've heard a Ferrari 360 and 550 Marenello before in real life and although i absolutely love the sounds they produce i still like the Skyline's straight six more.

I personally love the Volvo T-5 and the G35 exhaust notes. They sound like trumpets almost. But nothing compares to the 454 thumping through a Flowmaster Super 40 muffler.IMO. :)
